Dev Journal: Cosmic Events

With all the Necromancer posts you might think the upcoming DLC is just about dead things. But there is *lots* more to it.  Today we take a look at one such other feature: Cosmic Events!

The great changes taking placing on Altha are sending ripples through the cosmos. Strange phenomena appear in the skies, causing dread amongst the population. The world’s great leaders need to learn to adjust their strategies to deal with these events.  For some events it might mean a high state of alert, while other events can create the perfect opportunity to deliver a painful blow to one’s enemies.

These Cosmic phenomena  are random events that change the world in some way for a number of turns.  They can be toggled on or off when setting up a game. The events are of varying severity and duration, with the most cataclysmic ones happening in only the end game.  When an event occurs, all players get an message, stating the type of event and duration.  Here are a couple of the many Omens we are working on:

Fallen cloudsSFalling Clouds: The Clouds have fallen to the earth. The thick mist means vision is reduced, while extreme humidity means armored and machine units gain a defensive penalty and shock weakness. Definitely bad news for Dreadnaughts and Dwarves.

Shooting starsSShooting Stars: The night sky erupts with into a spectacle of shooting stars. All units get Lucky, and unit who are Lucky get extra Luck.   Of course players with high morale units benefit from this one.  Halflings rejoice!

Angry godsSNight of the Angry Gods: When the gods fight, skies darken with thunder clouds and the mortals suffer. Each turn all armies on the map have a chance to be struck by lightning. Don’t go hiding under trees.

Necro linchSRise of the Lich King: An ancient Lich King emerges to bring destruction.  Multiple stacks of undead units spawn across the lands, amongst them a powerful Necromancer hero with his retinue. The Lich King is a specially designed high level hero that carries many powerful artifacts that can be taken by the player who slays him.

We are using the game’s dynamic lighting system to change the look of the world according to the type of event . Of course we ensure that the maps remain readable:

CosmicHappening06Comparison of the regular with the misty mountain environment Set

CosmicHappening04… and an atmospheric night-like environment.

Because you know then you can go around saying “Winter is coming!” all the time until it actually happens.

Well, you know as well as I do that whenever you say “Winter is Coming”, it might take a while.

The Starks are always right… Eventually.

Actually, I was in the same camp as you, but the devs have implied that a race will be added.

They did? I must have missed that.

Oh, you mean the concept art of the Necro’s clothes? If yes, can agree that they kind look like Dark Elves, which means that there’s a high chance to Meandor to be the Protagonist of the campaing.

No. Other occasions – multiple occasions, in fact.

If there is an update tomorrow, perhaps we may know definitively then.

These are fun, but the only one that really kind of rubs me wrong is “Night of the Angry Gods”.

Adding random punishment on top of randomness is always – in my book – no bueno – in a serious strategy game. It adds more stress (drawback) than it adds fun (positive) for other players.

I think the return of the Lizards race would be fun to play. =) The offspring of the Draconian, but a bit more aquatic and more adaptive to the wetlands like the Goblins “wetland foraging”

It would be the other way around if anything. Lizards predate Draconians, by quite a while.

If anything, the existing Naga dwelling should get touched up a bit (aquatic catapults lol) and made into the returning Lizards imho. Their t1 is weak, they have no Cavalry, but their tier 3 is good and they have a T4 – they are already practically a race and if they were to become a full fledged faction they’d be incredibly asymmetric (overused word) and awesome to play with and against.

I have to disagree with this. It makes no sense to have events only give bonuses and not have other events penalties. There should be both so we praise the good times and fear the bad. To have events that give only bonuses it a bit to carebearish for me. However if they do have an advance option where you can put a check and select severity level of different Events in the game then this would satisfy both of us. You can choose to only select the beneficial events and I will choose all the events.

I agree. It is a mistake to have something with only an advantage. Good gameplay balances arisk/reward mechanic which is always easy to figure out since almost everything has a risk/reward to it.

So many good ideas from members, this addition has so many possibilities.

Was working on the core mechanics of a board game about wizards trying to survive the magic induced collapse of organic space time perception, until this idea’s spine was broken over the cruel knee of workin’ life.
The game involved random cosmic events so at least I can pass some of the savings on to you.

    Mana drought or Magical prolapse:
    A global nullification of mana.
No manna would be produced and no manna converted to casting points (for however many turns) effecting everyone. Saw the idea of randomized dispelling of spells and summons being thrown around.

    Manna Cascade:
The opposite. Like Kaiosama and Weiser Ritter’s ideas.
Available casting points are raised a level or two above your current one (for x turns). More manna is gained from nodes. Maybe chance of lowered upkeep for spells and summons
Induces an brief orgy of spellcasting on all sides, then after the event you have to face the upkeep.

    Cursed Meteor of Vampiric Doom
Like “The Colour out of Space”.
A meteor lands somewhere randomly on the map. It could act like temporary object which casts blight empire or barren terrain spreading from it. Any units within its area of effect have life stolen from them.
Perhaps if combat occurs within its AoE the mass curse enchantment goes into effect, maybe with random life steal each turn (meteor lingers for more turns if it steals enough life)

In Master of Magic tiles could be corrupted by a meteor as well, although you could clean the corrupted tiles easily with some Shamans/Priests and the worst part of this event was that the meteor hitted straigh into the city, killing population and even some units garrisoned there. But it was an instant event, not constant like your idea.

I would see Undead and Machines being immune to this effect, and I could see that if this meteor lands in the Domain of a city it would cause an illness that reduces population growth and cause unhappiness. (except for Ghoul cities)

Addmitely I never read “The Colour out of Space”, but considering it was a short H.P. Lovecraft story it would be more fitting for this meteor to be guarded by Eldritch Horrors.

Where’s Zelretch when you really need him?

Hmmm…an event that creates new Hearts?

    Could work.

It could even be a variation on the above mentioned meteor thingie…

I am so excited for events. All the events. Forever.

It’s a good short story, nice self contained Lovecraft:

I will give a shot to it later, thanks for sharing.

Back on topic, I’m really out of ideas for events because almost everything was suggested. I do remember that MoM had an event where pirates looted your Gold but I don’t think this is “cosmical” enough. (maybe unless it’s undead pirates like Captain Le Chuck but we already have an undead event)

With the Devs mentioning an updating of alignment effects, it could be interesting if there were Cosmic events which effect all players alignments.
    Here are some rough ideas….

    Global Veil of Evil:

Taking a page from Alexander Chizhevsky’s theory of sunspot activity effecting human behavior at the civilization scale.
Cosmic energies cause all players to become pure evil alignment for X turns.
All allegiances and treaties are broken, everyone is temporarily at war and hates everyone.
Automatic war on new found independents, all diplomatics default to evil, like taking over a city you are not given any good choices, auto plunder or raze.
All allegiances could be returned to pre-event state after event times out.
Not sure if the choices you make could stay with you afterwards and count against or for your pre-event alignment (“it wasn’t really me razing your city it was the cosmos!”)

Who knows this could be a necromancer spell or destruction mastery, spreading hate and evil.

    Global Veil of Good

Same idea but everyone becomes pure good alignment for x turns.
All non allied players could become neutral towards each other, may be too broken if suddenly everyone is allied and can see everyone’s everything (who knows though, maybe not)

A harder idea to implement, can you attack while under these effects.
May be an interesting mechanic, brief enforced cease fire. Very awkward if it happens in the middle of you invading someones territory.

Possible Theocrat or Creation mastery spell too

    Morality Inversion:

Your alignment remains the same but the effects of actions are reversed, razing becomes an act of good, killing a baby unicorn is good, etc etc

    Seas of Blood

If the bible has taught me anything it’s that water becomes menacing when bad stuff happens.
For however long events last, all units in water receive a small hp drain each turn (maybe machines too) and can’t regenerate. Units in water also could receive happiness penalty, and maybe traversing water hexes costs extra movement too.
Any towns whose domain includes water hexes, these hexes could count as hated terrain, maybe population growth rate of towns near water decreases too.
Bad for Mariners or continent/island modes
Vfx: Not sure the particulars of the engine, may be too much work to be feasible or may be as easy as switching colour filters of all water animations.

This could also double as a dreadnought spell, where ships can dump industrial byproducts in someones territory.

What about shadow leakage? The shadow world corrupts the real world and all units move fast but deal half physical damage and take 50% more damage from all sources. That’d lead to some crazy stuff happening. -Although if draconicons are still immune to it I’d rather them not getting this buff lol.

Oh goodness… I do like me some Lovecraft 😀

I have the Barnes & Noble Collection, and a half dozen of the old paerbacks, in various states of decay… I have read some of these stories a hundred times. The Color out of Space happens to be among my favorites ^-^

My thing with the lich king rises, is I would like for him to have an agenda, rather than just wander he map. Like actually build the cities he’s taking or just blight over the land.

To convert from YouTube to mp3 I use the site https://flvconverter.net/ . To do this, do not need authorization, just paste a link to YouTube video after you take yourself converted mp3 music. So I have already accumulated quite a decent playlist of good and funny songs for myself since I have been using this site for a long time

    Who has a similar situation?
