Dev Journal: ShadowBorn Specialization

Shadowborn_DevJournalThe upcoming DLC isn’t complete with new things to specialize your leader in. Today we reveal the Shadowborn specialization, which has its sinister skills distributed over Adept and Mastery levels.

First a bit of Lore.

[CAMPAIGN SPOILER] The secret society called Shadowborn have been integral in setting up the conflict between the Elven Court and the Commonwealth. Their ultimate goal is destroying the barrier between worlds, which was put in place by Merlin and unleash powers from the days of the great Wizard Kings. [END CAMPAIGN SPOILER].

The Shadowborn will do anything to achieve their goal; they won’t back down when it comes to manipulating and deceiving the people or causing death and destruction. As a Shadowborn you will become truly evil, it coincides with updates to the Alignment and relations system. Here are some examples of the Shadowborn skills.

EmbraceDarkness_DevJournalEmbrace Darkness: Let your city’s population embrace the evil within them with the Embrace Darkness spell. Cast it on a city and all newly produced units are now Dedicated to Evil and have Life Stealing.

SeedOfDistrust_DevJournalSeed of distrust: Do you want to screw over good players that are all about befriending independent cities? Cast Seed of Distrust on their friendly independent cities. From now on those independents won’t trust anyone, including that good player.

RiteOfMalediction_DevJournalRite of Malediction: This Tactical Combat spell will only affect your darkest units. Once cast, it gives your Dedicated to Evil units two random dark powers. They will have these powers until the end of combat. Which dark powers your units get will be a nice surprise every battle you cast the spell.

Mab'sBoon_DevJournalMab’s Boon: As a Shadowborn player you will probably want migrate your newly captured cities to your own race. Mab’s Boon gives a boost to your newly migrated cities. The Empire Upgrade gives you extra population, gold and a production boost for five turns in the city you just migrated.

FallenAngel_DevJournalThe Fallen Angel: The ultimate evil unit you can summon as a Shadowborn master. Shrouded in darkness, she is a powerful force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. This infantry unit buffed with total awareness and good slayer, but what makes her truly terrifying is her Petrifying Scream she can use once per battle. The scream can leave her living opponents petrified, unable to take any action.

FallenAngelThe Fallen Angel is set to spice up late game battles

Next to these new spells and unit, the Shadowborn specialization gives you boosts that help you build a strong and powerful army. If you are a player that loves a warmongering, doesn’t mind or even loves being evil than this is your specialization!

I hope you’re all excited to play the Shadowborn specialization.  Of course we won’t leave players of other alignments behind, but that is a topic for a following Dev Journal!

    This is amazing, truly wonderful.

I imagine that it will, in fact, be called the Torchbearer specialisation.

    [CAMPAIGN SPOILERS]

Sundren and Edward, under the direction of Merlin/agents of his, form the Torchbearers as an organisation dedicated to hunting down and stopping the Shadowborn in one branch of their campaigns.

I can’t wait to see what the Torchbearer spec brings to the table 😀

“I am Welcomed in the Home of Ravens and Other Scavengers in the Wake of Warriors, I am Friend to Carrion Crows and Wolves, I am Carry Me, and Kill with Me, and Die with Me Where the Road Ends; I am not the Honeyed Promise of Length of Life in Years to Come, I am the Iron Promise of Never Being a Slave.”

    One idea:
Maybee give that fallen Angel something like… hmm red or yellow shining eyes with smokey-eyes-makeup and
    black lips…or purpel?
I think this should fit their style very well 😉

Very interesting. Does life stealing stack for units that already have it? Butcher that steal 2-8 would be awesome.

For those who are asking about a good counterpart, developers already confirmed that there will be a specialisation for countering undead, Shadowborn isn’t surely about countering undead, so we have at least two new specialisations confirmed.

So there’s going to be two evil specialization now?

Does that mean there going to be a ‘Lightborn’ specialization?

Also if this branch can get Fallen Angels, Destruction needs Blight Elementals.

I LOVE it. Meet my new specialization. Global Life Steal? yessir. I never minded Migration anyway. Out with those suckers.

Are some of the lore Shadowborn going to be changed to have this? Would be awesome….(at the very least, have them have it inside the expansion campaign.)

Hell, this will be my main spec, goodbye creation and wild adept.

You deserve total success TS. cheers.

Oh baby, Im sure you wanna try my shadowborn warlord/rogue.

Will we see current leaders updated specs, or they will keep their actual specs?

Pretty sure there will be a Light equivalent specialisation – Probably Torchbearer Adept/Mastery (Or Keepers, if we go really old school).

And they’ve said before that they will not add Elemental Summons to Destruction/Creation Mastery because that would require integrating Expansion content into Specialisations from the base game, and therefore disadvantaging people who do not own GR.

I also do agree that the Fallen Angel is a bit baby-faced, I think she needs a more terrifying visage.

Are there Good Angels already with latest DLC ? or Fallen Angel will be first, and then we’ll receive light angels ?

    #147082

    Yeeeeesss. YEEESSSSSS.

At long last, I’ll live up to my screen name.

Theocrat’s Exalted are angels, and can technically be good or evil

(Also, a Shadowborn Theocrat could be fun – Dedicated to Evil Theocrat units…)

Exalted aren’t real angels like this fallen angel, In AoW:SM and earlier I believe too there was Light and Dark Angels, as a final summon unit of good or evil magic. Here we’ve got Fallen Angels, so there must be Light Angels. I loved how they countered each other.

I wonder if the “Embrace Darkness” spell works on dwellings and if it cancels out “dedicated to good”.

I kind of ran into a problem with that in the “Resurgence of Elves” scenario. In the intent of returning Heartwood to the High Elves I naturally migrated every city I could get my hands on, only to end up “Pure Evil” and with my Unicorns and Nymphs from the Fey Dwellings getting grumpy….
Enchanting the Sylvan Court with “Embrace Darkness” would come in handy in a case like that.

    Sounds nice.
This new specializations make me curious about the new alignment system and how it influences the game.

I still hope there will be the “old” conflict between good races (Elves, Dwarves and Halflings) and the evil races (Orcs, Goblins, ?).

Wouldn’t really fit with the lore of AOW3, where no race is inherently evil. See characters like Nomlik, a devoted worshipper of the All-Father seeking to free his people from slavery to the Commonwealth, etc. (He’s a Goblin)

I suspect the random alignments that independent cities can get in RMG (Which might be customisable in the map editor?) are going to be a bigger play in who you get along with, but with the method of gaining alignment points one way or the other changed in some way to account for the race relations as well.

It annoys me, a little. I wish the “migrate city” feature was not linked to evil alignments. For instance, when playing as an elf, I want to restore the elven settlements and play as an elven purist, and I’m not big on the whole integration thing. Ah well. I’ll bite the bullet and be “evil”, even though I don’t view it a such.

On the plus side, this looks like a way to get back what is effectively dark elves, so yippee.

You’re forcing people out of their homes and farms so that you can move in other people and you don’t view that as evil?

It’s never specified how you go about it. And if you view it as a reclamation, no, I don’t really see it as “evil” per se.

Just because you have a justification, doesn’t make it any less evil – Methods by which it is committed could only make it more evil (such as slaughtering the people vs simply forcing them to leave at sword point). It is an evil act regardless.

    ^This

Ah well. I’ll bite the bullet and be “evil”, even though I don’t view it a such.

Also, truly evil people don’t see themselves as evil. Usually, it either “for the greater good” or “evil is just a point of view”. I’m pretty sure WWII Axis/Nazi’s didn’t see themselves as evil.(The word “Nazi” comes from “Nationalistic Socialism”.)

    ……. Imagine…… A Frostling Necromancer with Shadowborn Mastery……

    RUN!!!

That is one really scary thought.

If we have Shadowborn for evil, We need Torchbearers as the good…Campaign will have Merlin as late campaign player. 🙂

Also Exalted as angels yes no, Not sure on that one. But have the Arch Angel for the good guys. Or better yet have maybe one step up to Valkyrie.

This one I probably will not ever play, but if they have to good equivalent then I am in.

Also the baby faced fallen angel seems right….. “Oh she is so cute….!!!How did I die again??” or “If in hell and you see a cute fluffy thing, RUN!!!”
