I looked forward for playing AoW 3 today, but unfortunately the game isn’t running on my Microsoft Surface 2 Pro Tablet. It fit the minimum requirements by having an i5-4200-Intel CPU with integrated graphics chip and 8 GB RAM, but the game is crashing very frequently.
It crashes in the main menu when I select random map or options (all other buttons work as intended) or it crashes randomly while playing even in absolute minimum graphic settings.
Maybe it’s a bug or the minimum requirements are not well defined. Does anybody else have similar problems with Intel CPUs with integrated graphics?

    Hi Morkon.
I have played the game succesfully for hours on a Surface Pro 1.
Have you updated your drivers recently?

I believe it was mentioned somewhere that Integrated Graphics and Windows 8.1 are known to have some issues.

    I may be wrong, though.

@ Tibbles: My Surface is up to date. I’m using the Steam version of the game. It’s really strange, that I have these problems and for you it works just fine. 🙁

Hey, have the same problem here with crashes everywhere :/ can start the game, but going in to just options crashes the game.
My guess it is the videoram that is not enough, but so many games seem to not care about it 😮 played many old and new games and the only ones I have had problems with was Magicka, some other game I forgot the name of and now Age of wonders.

If there is a hero out there, please help 🙁

    Processor: Intel core i5-3230M CPU @ 2,60GHz
    8 gb ram
    64-but operating system
    Windows 8,1
Videoram (my bane stopping me from playing this cool game?): 32 mb

@ Morkon I have exactly the same problems with a Surface 2 Pro, i5-4300u, 4gb Ram. Everything up to date. Surface Pro 1 has a slightly different video card (HD 4000 vs HD 4400), maybe the issue is with the newer card or the intel drivers.

First thing I did was try this game on my Surface 2 pro. No-go.

How is it possible that my Surface 2 pro can run Skyrim just fine… But it fails to run a strategy game?

It seems the Intel CPUs with integrated graphics aren’t well supported by the programmers. I found a mediocre solution in streaming the game from the desktop PC to my tablet.

I had some limited success playing it one my Surface Pro 2.

TLDR: Low memory issue on SP2, should be able to play AoW3, please fix, pretty please, with details(in post) 🙂

At first I got to play for like 20-30min or so before the Low System Memory warning started popping up, but I could still play the game for another 5-8min or so then it would generally crash.

I’ve been playing on low settings fullscreen 1920×1080 mostly and the framerate was mostly good, no real choppiness to speak of, fully playable really.
Also tried fullscreen 1600×900 I think it was, also worked well, but I got even quicker low memeory warnings then. Seems there might be something about playing on a different resolution than the desktop when it comes to INTEL HD graphics.

I’ve done a lot of searching on the net for ways to get around this problem, and have not really found any solutions.
I also did the typical “you should update your stuff” thing as I haven’t updated windows on the SP2 for a few weeks, and after that it got even worse, now the game crashes everytime I try to enter the options menu from the game screen.
I can still start the game and play it a little however.

I have also seen several posts by one of the developers saying he has played the game a lot on his surface pro, however on the surface pro 2 the game is unplayable because of the low memory thing.

So this basically sucks, as the SP2 is cleary capable of running the game perfectly fine but it keeps crashing because of these problems, which should not be an issue since the SP2 can play more demanding games than this perfectly fine.

For the little I have played it works very well with the stylus and I really wanted to be able to play this game on my SP2 as it is the perfect kind of game for it.

Here is a bunch of links with various information about the issues with INTEL HD integrated stuff I have have come across (I’ll mark them with comments or something later as I don’t have time now)

This one contains comments from the developer playing on the surface pro:

Any response from some developers if this is an issue that can be fixed is much welcome as I really want to play this game on my SP2 🙂

Sorry about long post, I get long winded sometimes.

    Hi everyone,

We are looking into Surface Pro 2 issues and similar issues with Intel HD Graphics.

Please check the links posted by Karu.
These follow the same lines that we are investigating now.

In short, it looks like you need to jump into the Bios to increase the amount of shared memory – i.e. the memory that both your applications & graphics can use.
AoW3 requires 512MB minimum of memory assigned to GFX to run.
Unfortunately we do not have a Surface Pro 2 at hand to look at this ourselves, so if you jump into the Bios yourself, any information on what you can do there would be much appreciated.

Allready tried change the vram values in bios. My laptop and many other laptops from what i’ve seen on the internet cant change the vram. It is all done automatically. My computer and others give enough boost for the vram on most games when ever vram is needed. Played other games perfect like skyrim for exemple even do it also wants 512 mb vram, but AoW 3 doesnt seem to like support that choice these laptops have :/

On my Surface Pro 2 the game doesn’t work very well either. Tried with the Microsoft and latest Intel drivers with the same result.

If I set graphics quality to low the game crashes if I press the research button. See data below.

If I set graphics quality to anything other than low no dialog appears instead and if I press ESC to exit the invisible dialog most textures in the game turn either all white or all black.

Regardless of graphics setting the main menu Options button causes the game to freeze (with music playing). Pressing ESC does nothing in this case.

When it crashes when I press the choose research button I get the following in the windows event log:

    So……
    1) Is a surface pro 2 specked to play this game? Y/N
    2) Will there be a solution to make the game playable on a surface pro 2?
Could we then get a time table on when this will happen?

Well in answer to Illume questions.

    1) Yes it should be, as the 30 or so minutes of gameplay sessions i have gotten have worked more or less flawlessly until the game crashes. It even worked well using more or less just the stylus for controlling it, which makes me want to play it on SP2 even more. Also the SP2 can play more demanding games than AoW3 so it should be completely possible.

    2) I can’t answer this question, but I can repeat it and hope for an answer 🙂

Also another point needs to be made specifcally for the SP2, unlike other laptops with the INTEL HD chips, it is not possible to change much in the BIOS, as we do not have access to a proper BIOS.
Have a look at this short video I came across as a reference on what is accessable on the SP1 and it is the same on the SP2.

There seems to be an issue with Intel’s latest Integrated drivers, AoWIII and DirectX 9.

Older drivers (e.g. 10.18.0010.3316) should work fine, we’re doing our best to come up with a plan to address this issue.

I can confirm I installed an older driver (10.18.10.3345) and the game is now running perfectly, thanks!

I am currently on 10.18.10.341 after the last windows update I did yesterday(not sure if I had a different version before that) and it is not working properly.

Where did you find the proper drivers for the SP2?
I havent been able to find it on the microsoft site, and the latest one at least listed for the 4400 on the intel site is 15.33.18.64.3496. And that seems like a version number far to removed from my version number that I am inclined too think I should not install it because of that.

And thank you very much for the quick replies from the developers, really liking what little I have played of AoW3, would very much like to play some more 🙂

Hi guys, been following this since launch hoping to get it work. I had the “crashes on select a skill to research” behavior and have managed to get my SP2’s graphics drivers reverted to 10.18.10.3345.

Steps to duplicate: (Please note, I have no guarantee this will completely unstick the game as once I managed to open the research window I came to write this up)
-Download and save the big 237MB download from this link: (second button)
    http://www.driversguru.com/driverdetail/961144-10.18.10.3345.html
-Unzip it into its own directory (by default Intel_Graphics_Win8-1_VER1018103345)
-Open device manager (can search it from the start menu)
-Go to display adapters -> Intel HD graphics family ->right click -> properties
-go to update driver -> select browse my computer.. -> Let me pick from a list
-Select the Have Disk button and browse to the directory “Intel_Graphics_Win8-1_VER1018103345\Win8.1\Win64\Install\Graphics” wherever you unzipped the initial download.
-Select the igdlh64 file and click open and next etc.
-This should install the driver for you. Restart when prompted.
-Try the game. I was ecstatic to see the research window for the first time and have yet to try the game proper. This should at least get us started until the devs have a chance to catch up.

    Good luck!

    Hi bangnull,

    Thanks for posting your findings.

We are still looking into a fix that does not require older drivers to be used, both on our and on the driver side of things.

Tried installing the old driver recommended by jmgallag using bangnull’s guide, and I am happy to report I have been playing for about an hour or so without any problems.

The game has not crashed in any menus etc yet, and I have not gotten a single low memory warning so this temporary solution seems to be working quite well.

But having played a little more now I wouldn’t say the preformance is buttersmooth excatly, it is perfectly playable on low settings, but it could have felt a tiny bit smoother. Considering that I am still just in the starting tutorial I have to wonder how it will handle on a large map in a proper game, hopefully well enough.

I also realize now that I have been playing on 1920×1080, so it might also help somewhat reducing the resolution.

Another thing I noticed, do not know if this game has proper touchscreen support written down as a feature somewhere, but like I’ve said it works well enough with the stylus, but trying to scroll around on the map using only my finger does not work properly. It will sort of jump back abit in the opposite direction of where you want to go and then it will start going in the correct direction, but a shorter distance than you’d expect.

Thanks for all the help, and I hope the devs will have this sorted quickly.

EDIT: Fully playable but somewhat sluggish is probably a better way to describe it.

Also could someone tell me where I can find the crash logs from my earlier crashes so I can post them here to help the devs?

But having played a little more now I wouldn’t say the preformance is buttersmooth excatly, it is perfectly playable on low settings, but it could have felt a tiny bit smoother.

The older drivers aren’t optimised as well as the latest ones, resulting in lower performance. Considering we can play without crashing I think it is a good compromise until we wait for a fix.

Also could someone tell me where I can find the crash logs from my earlier crashes so I can post them here to help the devs?

Than you for the information. If this is just a driver bug then hopefully Triumph Studios can talk to Intel to get it fixed.

I’ll try the older driver. With display driver updates in the past I have not noticed any improvements.

I got the following e-mail from Triumph Tech Support. I suspect they must be using the older driver then.

“Yes it should work normally. We have identical laptop here with Win8.1, 8GB mem, and Intel HD 4000 graphics running the game without problems.

We can try the following things to get it working. Perhaps some of them you already done, but just to be sure we need to make sure we don’t miss a step.

    * Update DirectX http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=35
    * Update your Display driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/
    * Reinstall the game (it might be that some data corruption is causing this problem).
    * In the BIOS of Laptop please try setting Shared Memory to the highest. Please check the laptops manufactorer site how to do this.”

    * I have an up-to-date version of DirectX (Windows 8.1 does this though Windows Update only).
    * I had updated my display driver through Windows Update just before installing the game. However, the downloadcenter.intel.com site has an even newer driver. Unfortunately this is still not a fix.
    * I have re-installed the game on the laptop (and had installed the game on another computer which works flawlessly), but the laptop still crashes.
    * As other people have reported my Intel HD 4000 GPU does not have any BIOS options or any options inside of Windows to adjust the shared memory. There is next to no information on MSI Slidebook S20 Laptops from the manufacturer.

    Hi All,

We’ve found what the issue is and are currently testing a fix for this, so far its all looking good. I expect the fix to be in the upcoming patch, which will go live pretty soon now..
