Grey Guard and Keeper of Peace Specializations

Hi there!  Because this new expansion is so big, we still have more development journals to bring you before we can announce it (and you can play it 😉 ) . There’ll be a video, name, and full feature list presented at least a month before release.  Today we’ll be discussing the Grey Guard and Keeper of the Peace specializations. As with the previous Shadowborn specialization, they come in adapt and mastery levels and are strongly tied to a particular alignment. You’ll see that some of these news skills connect to new systems which are part of our efforts to diversify world map game play, making race relations and economy more important.

Greyguard

Grey Guard Specialization

Grey Guards seek balance between good and evil to gain military and economic advantage. Their magic is focused on cleansing the essence of unnatural beings, they can absorb it for magical power and manipulate it to heal their armies.  Sample Skills:

Guardian_of_BalanceFlourishing Balance: This empire skill gives benefits to Grey Guards with neutral alignment.   As long as your leader is Neutral, all your cities gain an additional +50 population. (For undead towns this is halved)

Exploit_WeaknessCardinal Culling: Grey Guards are all about maintaining the natural order of things. This spell helps cull enemies on the battle field that show up in large masses of the same type. Target enemy unit and every unit like it has 40% weakness to physical damage and does -5 melee damage until the end of combat.

Absorb_EssenceHealing Essence: Destroys all corpses on the battlefield. All friendly units are instantly healed for 25hp and gain a happiness bonus.  Needless to say Necromancers don’t like this spell.

Purging_BurstPurging Burst: All Fey, Summoned, Undead and creatures of Magical Origin must resist or lose 3 resistance and are dealt 5 fire and 15 spirit damage. If resisted they are dealt 2 fire and 7 spirit damage instead.

Summon_Chthonic_GuardianSummon Chthonic Guardian:  “The gateways between good and evil perk my curiosity. If I could penetrate those barriers I could corrupt the all creation. The All-Father would bow to me. My probes discovered beings there. The most exhausting are incorruptible, known as Cthonic Guardians. They thwart my attempts to disrupt nature’s balancing forces. Armored in etherstone with mighty wings and impenetrable shields, their strength is not attacking, but defending. They fight for all eternity, inspiring others to stand when they should flee. If discovered, I fear this nuisance will foil my plan to contort the natural world.” — “Breaking the Faithful” by Master Dark

The Chthonic Guardian is a tier 4 flying pikeman that specializes in defense. It has a shield and the defender ability, granting it a greater defensive bonus while guarding and once it reaches elite level it gains Instant Wrath, reflecting damage from all sources back on its attackers. It’s signature ability is Rallying Cry, an area of effect ability that boosts the morale of nearby friendly units as well as granting them Vigilance for one turn, allowing to guard and attack in the same turn.

Angels

 Torchbearer

Keeper of Peace Specialization

Keepers of Peace are dedicated to the path of good, they are masters of diplomacy, expert at forming alliances with independent settlements and even those of their enemies. When war becomes inevitable, their magic bolsters their armies giving them strength in the direst of circumstances.  Note we didn’t call this specialization “torchbearers” because we can’t retroactively insert it in the original campaign, and torch bearers aren’t necessarily dedicated to good. Sample Skills:

Rally_of_PopulaceBolster: Your units do not suffer from morale penalties until end of combat. Simple, but very efficient!

BolsterRally Populace: Target enemy city suffers from -500 happiness and betrayals are more likely to occur. As long as this spell is active betrayals can occur even if the owner’s Race Happiness is higher than the other player’s Race Happiness. Independent and Undead Cities can’t be affected.   This is a great way to disable the edge of rival empires!

The City Betrayal Mechanic:  If a city of an enemy empire is unhappy, it may offer to betray its owner to a suitable leader who is at war with the current owner.  Of course that leader does need a positive happiness toward the race of the town in question.  If the town can’t find such a player it might rebel and become independent. The city offers to betray its owner via a quest to the prospective new leader, asking him to send an army to City and relieve them of the vile despot.  When the player attacks the city, the local population aids the player, opening the city gates and spawning militia units behind the walls. If the takeover is successful, the city joins without the need to absorb or any of the negative penalties of capturing a city by force.

CityOverthrow

Aura_of_LightAura of Inspiration: The target friendly unit gains Inspiring Aura, 2 physical damage, 3 spirit damage and provides every friendly unit in a 1 hex range with 300 happiness.

Bearer_of_LightBearer of Light: All Diplomatic actions with Independent Cities take 1 less turn.

Spiritual_FreedomSpiritual Freedom: The city is engulfed by the harmless fire of the Torchbearers. All units produced in target friendly city, and all units summoned within that city’s boarders, gain  Meditation and become Dedicated to Good. Researching this Spell will make your Leader and Hero’s Dedicated to Good.   [Meditation is like an advanced Guard mode, allowing units to skip a turn and gain strong offensive buff)

Summon_Arch_GuardianSummon Arch AngelArchAngelr: “Its spear burned with divine fire, shredding the undead hosts that filled us all with dread. My wife smiled. Her face glowed. She announced, ‘The All-Father sends a servant! My prayer is answered.’ Our despair evaporated. We were filled with pure joy. We knew that there were better things from other worlds—things with power that fought for our cause. The Arch Angel smote our foes with brutal determination. We were all inspired to fight. Before ascending to heaven, the angel touched the wounded and they were made whole.”—“Husband to a Saint” by Ugrid Grovle

The Arch Angel is a support angel, as well as healing and resurgence abilities it radiates inspiration, boosting the morale of nearby units. It also has a powerful aura that can blind any unit that strikes it in melee combat.

The problem now is, you have 3 specializations with tier4 summons which get it without much effort. Whereas for elemental mastery you have to commit 2 specialization points, thus limiting your options overall and your summons are still weaker than the ones of the 3 new specializations have? That just doesn’t make any sense.

Mastery is still 2 specs, and the research costs aren’t exactly cheap.

    You’ll get Elementals quite a bit beforehand…

Oh right, didn’t see that the new specs are also divided in adept and master. The speed at what you get Elementals doesn’t really matter for my point though. You dont know how fast the new summons will be available and whether or not they get their own tier 3 summons.

I just want my favorite summon in all of age of wonders: Basilisk. He was what made earth/lizards fun in the prequels.

More fantastic ideas! To say we are all excited for the release of this expansion would be like saying a F5 Tornado is windy. A tad understated. 😀

Liking the update, had hoped for more info regarding release date and maybe even a pre-order button 🙂

This expansion is so going to rock, big time!

    Kind regards,

Why is it when I turn off the laptop, after hours of playing Age of Wonders 3, the girlfriend is there waiting? I'll look up and stare at 115 pounds of pure Satan!

    :)

I keep hoping for one more slot. With all the new specialisations being added in the expansions, 4 slots would still have the players being relatively (compared to the number of specialisations available) specialised.

“I am Welcomed in the Home of Ravens and Other Scavengers in the Wake of Warriors, I am Friend to Carrion Crows and Wolves, I am Carry Me, and Kill with Me, and Die with Me Where the Road Ends; I am not the Honeyed Promise of Length of Life in Years to Come, I am the Iron Promise of Never Being a Slave.”

Can we have a necromancer with a Keeper of the Peace specialization? Maybe even for campaign?

I hope this means it counts as a support, it will go well with theocrats

Why not a Shadowborn Theocrat….theocracy gone wrong?

And, I imagine, has the usual T4 summoning and upkeep costs, which means fielding them in large numbers will be hard for classes that don’t focus on their mana economy (or have better things to spend it on)

I wonder if Spiritual Freedom and Embrace Darkness will be part of the Adept Keepers/Shadowborn. I do want to put Keeper of Peace it on my Warlord but I don’t want to dischard Water Mastery.

Wasn’t expecting Grey Guard thought, especially this:

The Chthonic Guardian is a tier 4 flying pikeman that specializes in defense. It has a shield and the defender ability, granting it a greater defensive bonus while guarding and once it reaches elite level it gains Instant Wrath, reflecting damage from all sources back on its attackers.

Ouch! Instant Wrath as a unit skill. I can see these guys wrecking things as Warlord summons, because since they will be Pikeman (or Pikewoman in this case) they will gain Martial Arts, allowing them to be a bit more offensive.

The Arch Angel is a support angel, as well as healing and resurgence abilities it radiates inspiration, boosting the morale of nearby units. It also has a powerful aura that can blind any unit that strikes it in melee combat.

I hope this means it counts as a support, it will go well with theocrats

Actually I think it will more dangerous in the hands of a Sorcerer, because I guess it will have some competence as a combat unit. So imagine it then with Phase, Projectile Resistance and Inflict Stun. That’s one nasty unit here.

Also, in the next patch, elemental masteries will give a spell for zero research that allows you to turn Mana Nodes into nodes of that element. And these nodes will also give +5 Research on top of the +5 Mana from Adept. Meaning that even thought you will not have a T4 Summon at least you’ll be ahead on researching your skills compared to the other players.

The meaning of procrastination? I'll tell you later...

Grey Guard is funny. Its basically an anti spam specialization lol. Lot’s of hard counters to what will probably be popular tactics.

The Angels being T4 units is certainly interesting. Since that mean Rogue now has T4 if they want it. Unless these specializations work differently from existing one’s.

Overall I have to say this is shaping up to be a pretty major expansion pack. I doubt we will get one this big again. It’s like our Frozen Throne.

Brave New World might be a more accurate comparison – at least keeps it within the “family” as it were.

Gyor! Stahp! You’ve already posted that!

And as an interesting point – do those upgrades actually apply to summoned units, or only to produced ones?

We’ve never had a summonable support, so I’m not sure.

I would say yes. School of Enchantment and Teleportation apply to current and new units in the field, not ones that were produced after it was researched like Order of Templar Knights.

They will – they also apply to units you build before, unlike other upgrades like the order of Sacred Support etc.

IF it’s support. Aside from Succubus/Wraiths, we don’t really have a support yet that seems designed to go in. And those two are better because on utility/resilience than on damage. We also don’t know yet if we want the Ice Queen to really make contact.

Wow, this is really great stuff! 😀

I am very excited for the coming expansion but, as I have said already, I wont be able to play it much until the summer, so I dont mind that the wait is to go on 🙂

The new Grey Guard Spheres look FANTASTIC. I had my hopes set on a neutral spec, and I think I shall really enjoy using these ^_^

This expansion is becoming gigantic! It feels like how shadow magic was for AOW2! The game will feel a lot different with this, cannot wait anymore! Cruel teases!

Am kinda worried about Theocrats getting over-shadowed though. These two specializations out shine alot of the stuff the theocrat and especially creation mastery provide.

    O.O

REALLY cool and meaningful changes. I’m amazed at the direction the game is going. I think its more of a 2.0 version that an expansion, everyone HAVE to get this one!!!

I, too, am worried about Creation, and also Destruction, being overshadowed by the new alignment-based specializations. Unless they will be in addition to the current specializations that you get to choose, in which case a little tweaking of the existing ones would make for some nice synergistic results. Also, all of the other specs were designed to create a nice balance between them (across all points), and now that multiple specs are being added, along with another class, all of which are game-changers, there are some gaps.

Either way, I agree with other posters that re-visiting the earlier specs would be a good idea, just to tighten things up a bit.

The new content is exciting, but I’m not sure I understand how this fits into the current framework. The idea of this game, in regards to alignment, was that there was no predetermined alignment. You could be a Theocrat and choose to behave in an evil way, making you evil. Or, you could be a Rogue, be good and have a good alignment. I thought this was a mistake, as was having classes in general. Now, they have chosen to make alignment a specialization. So, I can choose to be a Theocrat, choose Creation and Peace specializations and what, still choose to be evil by chasing down Fey Horses and slaughtering them?
Honestly, I think this new stuff is cool, because it will make it easier for modders to make the game AoW 3 should have been: Where you choose specializations, and those choices combined with the alignment you cultivate determine what units and spells you get access to. This makes a lot more sense, and makes the game more organic and less repetitive, along with making alignment choices more meaningful.
Now we have a game that has you choose a class, and the specializations you choose
along with it may make absolutely no sense. Some will say this was done to avoid tropes, which is silly, because 90% of the units and spells fall into pretty standard archetypes, and all 6 of the 7 current races are from LoTR.
    ….Ok community, fire away…..

I am Adam Evil, I'm not really evil, am I?

If a player wants to take good advantage of the ‘Dedicated to Alignment’ spells(combat and strategic), then they would be well advised to adhere to said alignment, or the morale of any Dedicated to Alignment units will suffer, sometimes greatly.

Selecting the new specialization Adept, and especially Master, tiers implies an intention to relatively adhere to a particular playing style. Some deviation is of course allowed, as per usual.

People may be surprised to learn that all of the new Specializations can actually work with Necromancers, even the Good alignment one. Let alone being of varying versatility to the other classes as well. Of course, the current specializations remain useful, and include various tweaks.

I just hope they add more spells and tier 4 units to existing specialisations. I need my dominating basilisk for earth. :D

This is my concern, too. All this new stuff looks amazing, but I feel like unless there’s some tweaking these new specializations could end up easily overshadowing the old ones. This doesn’t necessarily require giving all the old specializations T4 units, but I think a few of them will need a boost.

That being said, I’m impressed that Keeper of Peace and Shadowborn both seem substantially different from Creation and Destruction.

With all that news and other good stuff, it almost looks like we are getting a new game rather than just an expansion. Please tell us the release date now so we can sleep more calmly:-). Hopefully, the wait will be over prior to March…

I feel this way too. It almost seems like AoW 3’s version of Shadow Magic.

Indeed you can. You’d be screwing yourself over but you can.
