Triumph’s New Game to be announced May 18th @ PDXCon!

Finally some big news: We will announce our next game during PDXCon in Stockholm on May 18th 2018!  Yes, this game is turn-based and yes, this game should appeal to Age of Wonders fans! You can also be there with us at PDXCon, where our parent company Paradox Interactive celebrates the universes and communities of their games.

This large gathering of strategy fans and devs has seminars, contests, LAN sessions, parties and much more. Check here for the details and sign up!  Looking forward to seeing you there and showing you all that we’ve been working on for the last two years!

So after ~7 months the news we get are: We’ll give you news in 3 month?
Must say I hoped for more.
But well not really important as long as you deliver such good games 🙂

Thats really outstanding news! 2000 hours+ AOW 3 total played and still playing from time to time. Hope your next project will keep the mark.

To go, or not to go, to Sweden?

    That is the question.

Would have loved to, could even find the time, but since we have never been to Stockholm, we’d want to have a few days around the event, fly Thursday to Monday at least, but 4 nights plus 2 flights plus 2 tickets plus allowance would tear a big hole into our summer holiday budget – well, actually go a good way to plunder it, and with said holiday already planned I’ve reluctantly shelved the idea.

    Finally some news 🙂

I do hope we won’t have a year+ wait after this. We now have an announcement for the announcement of the game but I prefer a short period with regular news updates vs. feeding the fans a few crumbs every few weeks.

It’s about time for a new decent turn-based strategy though, so glad something is coming up at least 🙂

I’m looking forward to the announcement and while I voted for AoW 4, Triumph has built enough trust with me that I’ll be happy with whatever they turn-based game they announce and will buy it on day 1 (or perhaps earlier).

I second this. Whatever it is, it will be great.

I would be excited if it’s AoW 4 but I would also be excited if this is a completely new game. Honestly I would love to see AoW-style game with less generic fantasy world.

At first glance, the AoW world does seem fairly generic, but when you get deeper into the lore, the entire setting is a subversion of what is usually a core trope in generic fantasy worlds – namely, the decline of the elder races to be eclipsed by the rising star of humanity. (The broad overview of the AoW story can be summarised as “that’s what was supposed to happen, but the old races refuse to go quietly.”)

That said, if the new game is AoW4, the distinguishing factor is that the Shadow Gate is open. That allows for a lot of weirdness potential.

It just irritates me that there is infinity of possible fantasy world yet in almost every fantasy game we see the good old elves and orcs. I know it is the safest route but really couldn’t games creators use their imagination more sometimes?
If it is AoW4 I really hope that Shadow Realm will add lots of things that we hadn’t saw already a thousand times.

Yeah, I get where you’re coming from. However, I think the AoW-verse works so well because it is the same elves, orcs, dwarfs and so on – it makes the subversion more poignant.

There’s also a tendency, in settings that have “unique” races, to have races that are essentially filling the same roles anyway. (See the Five Races trope, if you don’t mind risking the timesink that site can be.)

But yeah, the Shadow Realm opens up a lot of weirdness potential. Shadow Demons and syrons are both unique to the setting.

That’s the right time to remind everyone that there is a Community Expansion for AoW3 in the work and it includes the Shadow Realm, Shadow Demons and Shadow Elves (which, to fulfil your dreams Damkac, are quite different from classical fantasy Elves)! It’s still in alpha tests, as explained in this article: https://www.the-battlefield.com/aow3/index.php?page=commnews&eingabenewsid=74 A new campaign will be available and we’d like more opinions on what mix of old and new characters you’d like to see in the campaign, please vote here: https://www.the-battlefield.com/aow3/index.php?page=bf_poll&pollnumber=30

    Cautiously optimistic.

I am a huge fan of Triumph. The caution is only because Stellaris looks awful (unplayable even) – and already has like (8) DLC. If this is the new direction of the merger then I’m worried.

Stellaris is a pretty nice game IMO. I can understand if someone does not like how a game looks ofc, but there’s no reason why it should be unplayable to anyone.

I agree that the game has too much DLC that is incredibly overpriced and I have no idea what to expect from Triumph’s next release in this regard.

    Can’t wait to hear.

I would be happy for AoW4 – so many cool ideas have been kicked around for the next installment in the series.

I would also love to see a new 4X-style game in a completely original setting. I’d happily settle for a sci-fi planetary game (we have waaaay too many space 4X games right now).

Regardless, I can’t wait. AoW3 is still, for me, the best designed and executed 4X game of the past many, many, years. And the dev’s have an awesome relationship with the community as well. Getting these two things aligned is a remarkable achievement.

Can’t wait to get the conversation started. Would be awesome to hear what everyone thinks of the soon-to-not-be-our-super-secret-project.

    Aaaawh, ty!

And the dev’s have an awesome relationship with the community as well.

Well, you all make that easy by being awesome yourselves.

Getting these two things aligned is a remarkable achievement.

    That would be awesome.
It one of my goals for the project.

I also said a couple of times and at a lot of places that AoW 3 is the best game I ever played (and I’m playing since the 80s), keeping me at it since it’s release.

The new game would be the first I’d pre-order, because it’s bound to be a hit.

For the industry, with the game probably not being published before 2019, it would be time enough to warrant AoW 4. I have no preferences, though; on one hand I would really like to see what you guys could deliver in other areas – say, a space game; on the other, the prospect of getting a new version of AoW, with all the experience and great ideas floating, is really mouthwatering.

    So, yeah. Thrilling.

I have a suggestion that might be fun.

Excluding this Friday today we have 10 Fridays and 10 weekends before the 18th of May. How about dropping some “hint” or “info” about the game each Friday, obviously without really revealing the exact nature of the game, so when I say “hint” or “info” it’s more, like, in a teaser way.
Might be the name or names of charcters or whether there will be tactical combat – whatever info you find innocuous enough to spread.

So that would amount to 10 hints until then – and obviously help passing the time until then.

    How about that? 🙂

Lol, nice try Jolly Joker, nice try :p

In all seriousness, I think we’ve already had our vague hints: it’ll be turn-based strategy, AOW fans will like it and the story of AOW3 was deliberately left pretty open-ended with several hints of what is to come. Just a bit over 2 months of waiting and then we’ll know and then I also hope we won’t have another long wait until the actual release.

It’s funny that Triumph doesn’t respond to the worries many have about the Paradox-curse of excessive DLC releases after release.

    A few examples;

    Crusader Kings 2 – 28 (!!!) DLC’s
    Cities: Skyline – 15 DLC’s
    the aforementioned Stellaris – 11 DLC’s
    Tyranny – 5 DLC’s
    and so on.

And if it were beefy DLC’s like the 2 DLC packs of AoW3, but no, most just add a few features.

I truly hope the new game will not go the path of normal Paradox games and Triumph stays true to their policy of releasing only DLC packs that actually are worth it, with a lot of content.

    Kind regards,

    Low

Why is it when I turn off the laptop, after hours of playing Age of Wonders 3, the girlfriend is there waiting? I'll look up and stare at 115 pounds of pure Satan!
