Age of Wonders III cover art revealed!

After having worked on it for several months, we are thrilled to finally show you the cover art of Age of Wonders III.  Some keen-eyed forum users already noticed an early version on Amazon.de, but this is the real deal!

AoW3_boxart_int_final

After going with a bunch of alternatives with our co-publishing partners, we settled on this concept. Our retail partners want a standout cover, preferable with the logo at the top so it’s easy to see on the shelves. The cover should show the experience of what the game is about. It displays the various types of leaders you can be in the game , looming above a battlefield in a fantastic world. The central character also has high contrast so we have an element that pops from a far (from smaller on-screen versions).

There were big arguments whether a female (Sundren) or male (Edward) should be the central character. Apparently covers with women sell a lot less, so we opted for the male. Don’t tell this to Rhianna Pratchett (our friend and writer who worked on Overlord!). Seriously though, we felt the pose with the central large sword better fitted with the male dreadnaught than the female Rogue. The light beyond Age of Wonders logo shines on the lead characters, as if they have a heavenly mandate to protect the arcadian landscape below from the attacking army. Will the player protect the Age of Wonders, or use it for his own evil goals?

The art is a group effort. The initial concept was done by Lennart, subsequently Lead Artist Allert van der Leij did the 3D posing and worked out the page core of the page in high detail. Additionally Intern Chilly Prins (who has a great knack for color and environment) added painterly details, bringing the elements together. Then Len did some final detailing on the characters.

The Characters:

  • Dwemus, A Dwarf Theocrat. A jolly Dwarf Priest appearing in the story. He’s got a grudge against the Commonwealth
  • Sundren, High Elf Rogue. Daughter of Julia and King Saridas. Protagonist of the Elven Court Campaign
  • Edward, Human Dreadnaught. Protagonist of the Commonwealth Campaign.
  • Reshkar, Draconian who you’ll help find a new homeland in the the Elven Court Campaign
  • Saridas, former Dark Elf, appearing in both EC and CW campaigns

(Elements of) this art will also be used as banners in the digital stores and on the webpage. Hopefully we’ll get some posters printed too.

Let us know what you think!

Please note Triumph earns less than half off a physical copy compared to a digital distributed copy of the same price. :-)

    So clearly we should buy…both!?:)

    Also, estimated price?

Anyone know if there’s gonna be a more expensive special edition? I’d certainly buy that, especially if it came with:

    1. A booklet of units and their stats
    2. A steam key

I’ll have to go back and play the first and second AoW games. I only discovered AoW: Shadow Magic earlier this year (after an unhealthy addiction, then a healthy addiction to World of Warcraft) and loved it. Will be buying the digital copy to make sure the developers get the most credit. Probably going the GoG.com route.

does this mean the main campaign characters have fixed classes now?

This is what caught my eye, too. Hoping that this isn’t the case, or that the campaigns will vary up who we control. Or something.

The cover looks boss and all, though.

The main campaign characters are fixed, you can’t change them. He/she will stays with you in every map and write the journal entries between the campaigns. However, you will meet with many other characters during the campaign, and on many maps one of these characters will lead your armies(and your main character is only a “Hero”). So this way you can try out every class in the campaign, with their skills, spells and units.

If that’s a Draconian its !*£$??? It’s just a human with horns. It might do as a Daemon.

@ Andysaurus, not to do the moderators job or anything, but there is another thread talking about precisely this-whether or not the draconians are too ‘human’ and lots of interesting discussions regarding the draconian breeding policy as a possible explanation for a forced evolution to make them look more human…

    I suggest you read it!

One other thing that has been nagging at me, Saridas skin tone is lighter is this due to the mending? more importantly will be get dark blue, grey skins for the high elves?

    Saridas

And a unique pale skin tone for an orc? 😛 anyone?

Oh yes please! ive been dying for some gray skined orcs like in LOTR! (no problems with green ones, but why in all the games orcs are always green?)

Question is, do our choice of the leaders skin color (which there is such option) will affect the entire race i play?

Ahh, gotcha, that’s good, then. Thanks for the explanation!

They chose fixed characters because in first game you have nearly total freedom of choice (some races were banned for obvious lore reasons) but then you get some lines that sounded weird like your lizardman character that is surprised about lizardmen or that he speaks like a treehugger (for example “remember elves, dwarves, halfling, nymps blablabla” but not a single mention about lizard’s life in undead ending).

As the commonwealth are now officially taking up the limelight on the games box art, does that mean their campaign is the cannon storyline?

If not, have you decided which is the cannon storyline/ending yet and will you tell us at release?

Also im sad to see the dwarven theocrat being a good guy, i think this was the best opportunity to break to mold and preconceptions that a lot of people will have of the class being naturally* good. I know this guy is part of the storyline, but it would of been nice to have a different … nasty dwarf theocrat.

    * Naturally isnt the correct word …. but its close enough ^^

I think “by definition” would have been a possible alternative wording.

It seems the game come with a premade nasty Dwarven Theocrat: top one with adept earth a master destruction. With master destruction he can’t be a nice Theocrat 😀

Right! Evil Theocrats all the way! We’ll replace all Bibles with copies of the Necronomicon, and hold ritual sacrifices to Azathoth! Too bad you can only build your ultimate unit when the stars are right…

so judging from the picture one thing is certain that u can have at most 3 skills at one time. One thing is bothering me that if u can have a basic skill can u research its mastery or mastery can be only obtained via skill points on character creation.

Ah true enough Tomi, but look at that description … its totally generic. I really hope you see some good AND bad stuff in the theocrat description. Yea i guess that would fix any preconceptions (well … for the few who actually read this stuff lol :P)

I assume that ‘mastery’ in this case is a collection of more advanced or supplementing spells/skills in the category. I doubt you can unlock it by researching it during the game as that would make selecting mastery at the start far less atractive than selecting a new category.

    #13848

I believe that to ‘master’ something you have to pick ‘adept’ and then ‘mastery’ e.g. fire adept, fire mastery.

Each takes a skill slot, leaving you with one extra skill slot.

As it looks like there will be many many skills that are useful out of the gate, this will make the decision over what to pick pretty interesting.

I am cuirious to know if you can access higher level spells during the game without pickinng mastery, i.e., if I pick adept, does that allow me to research higher level sp-ells once my lower level spells are finished, OR does it simply mean I can access all spells but at reduced effectiveness, OR, a combination of both?

I want to mention the Dungeon Maker series for PSP, where orcs are furry boar people, and therefore not green at all.

    #13874

I think that Green Orcs were originally a Warhammer fantasy thing. It was in game a reference to their plant/fungal origin (and possibly so that they would look cool when painted).

It also avoids some of the problems that people have with the appearance of Tolkien’s Orcs. These are a combination of Anglo-Saxon demon/corpses (Orcneas is the word from Beowulf), and the Huns as described by Jordanes in Book 24 of his history of the Goths.

The Huns are described as “swarthy” possessing a “shapeless lump, not a head, with pin-holes rather than eyes” and

“short in stature, quick in bodily movement. . . broad shouldered. . .firm-set necks which are ever erect in pride. Though they live in the form of men, they have the cruelty of wild beasts.” Jordanes also claimed that the Huns descended from exiled people and evil spirits that bred together in a swamp.

Tolkien’s Orcs have some evil spirits among their ancestors, and the appearance is both deathly and Hun like. Their skin looks as if burned, that references both the connection to death/corpses/evil spirits and a medieval version of the Devil known as “The Black Man” who was a pitch black humanoid with Caucasian features.

This being rather complicated, and unknown to the casual reader, later adaptations of Orcs have wisely selected green or grey to distinguish orcs from humans, elves, and dwarves.

I can totally understand putting Edward in the center of the image is a design choice that fits well and that’s fine. But the argument that ‘women on covers sell less’ annoys me because there’s no proper hard data to back that up. The latest Lara Croft, The Last of Us, Remember Me and Beyond: Two Souls were all games that had women prominently on the cover. The first 2 sold well, the last two had difficulties in the gameplay that hindered their sales a bit and this had nothing to do with their cover. It’s a stubborn and bad myth that gamers are apparantly so dense that they can’t buy a game because there’s a woman on its cover. If they don’t buy your game, there’s definitely another reason.

FYI World of Warcraft Vanilla has a Night Elf Woman’s face on the cover of their game and we all know how those sales went.

All in all this game is still the game I want the most in 2014 and the cover is beautiful (will there be a collector’s edition?), I just hope that more of these stubborn myths don’t hinder character/hero personalities in the game.

I think the women thing was a bit of a joke, they continue on with a “seriously though”, giving the real reason. It’s more due to the classes of the two characters rather than their gender.
