Dev Journal: Empire Quests

Hello everyone, today we’re going to be talking about a new feature from the forthcoming Golden Realms expansion, Empire Quests:

Image1

Empire Quests reward players for achieving a particular milestone in developing their empires, such as building a Grand Palace in one of their cities, or owning 5 cities. The twist is that, once one player has completed an Empire Quest, all the other players in the game are informed of it, and they will not be able to complete that quest themselves.

Image2

This means that other players in the game receive a warning that you are pulling ahead in a particular area or that you are going for a particular strategy. For example, if a player sees you have built an item forge, they may deduce that you’re going planning to put resources into super-equipped heroes rather than army production.

Another goal of the system is to help relieve the sense of isolation players can have when playing games, as it can take a while before running into another player. A warning that another, unknown player has managed to get 5 cities helps remind the player that they’re not alone in the world and gives them a sense of how they’re well progressing against their opponents. Also between allies it creates a form of indirect competition.

Some of the quests come in pairs, where a player completing one quest means that same player cannot complete the other. For example, Prime Evil locks out Prime Good.

Image3

While other quests can only be completed far into the end game, and serve to warn other players that they’ve got an awful lot of catching up to do:

Image5

There are 13 Empire Quests in the game, each with their own conditions and rewards, with plenty of space to add more in the future! Please let us know what you think in our forums and keep an eye out for the next Dev Journal!

I mean, Yeah, I like these. To bad they only gave new ones we’d already seen in the video.

Aye, would’ve liked to see more, but I can understand holding a few back, since there really aren’t all that many.

in the all knowing quest they get just two spells or the whole two specializations? researching your specializations take a lot of time, but the reward is great

You get two new specializations, you could get explorer, water master, anything you don’t have. Prerequisites are ignored (you can get master without having adept). You need to research the skills in the specializations yourself though.

Sorry for only showing you the ones from the video, I’d forgotten which you guys had already seen.

    Here’s a couple more:

Paragon – Be The First To Summon or Build A Tier 4 Unit
Reward: That unit gets a unique “Paragon” ability, granting it more hitpoints, defense, resistance and the Resurgence ability.

Heroic Skill – Be The First To Level A Hero To 15
Reward: That hero gets an extra 5 skill points.

Sage – Be The First To Research A Tier 6 Skill
Reward: You get 2 new secret spells researched instantly.

First one you noted in the vid, but the other two…..I LIKE!

I must say the 5 skill points isn’t that overwhelming, but still a very nice bonus, and the Sage…completely random? I could get the combination of Mass Curse + Mass Bless for example?

Right now, Sanctums have a tendacy to give Tier 1 Secret spells, which are pretty underwhelming by the time you can explore them, and wizards towers are a little bit better, but still appear to have a low chance for T4+ spells. This may not be the place for this, but wouldn’t it be a good idea to put the lower tier spells in Vaults of Knowledge and force a minimum tier of 3 or something for the other two?

I have no idea any more xD The problem is that the system doesn’t assign values to the secret spells the way it does with everything else. So it sees a T1 spell as being the same value as a T6 one, which leads to the issue you see… You’re right that it’s a little underwhelming, I’ll see if I can do something in the patch about it if I have time.

Really? I seem to get some secret spells way more than others. I’ve had Dire penguin summon, Frost Missile, and Shock Missile quite a few times already, as well as Recharging Mana Currents, but I’ve never had the Phoenix summon spell once (nor True Resurrect). Could also be bias from my small personal sample of course

Only 13? Aww… Come on guys, I was expecting 20 at minimum 😛

Joking aside, I love this Empire Quest and hope that more achievements will be added.

Wait, the phoenix summon actually exist?

I never got secret spells other than summon penguin and kobold, frost missile and shock missile, is my luck too low or is it because i play a mostly a medium map.

I hope something is done about the chance of getting high tier secret spells.

And about mounts, is there a chance of getting more cool mounts without being a sorcerer? From empire quest maybe?

I don’t know how I hadn’t noticed that before, but isn’t Resurgence way too much?
Being the first to have a Tier 4 is already very good, but giving it Ressurgence could make it quite unfair…
Or do you think it won’t be such an issue because you are fixing the quests and rewards for dwellings anyways so that noone will have a Tier4 early and once they hit the field resurgence on a single unit won’t make that much of a difference?

    @numetal

as long as it is only on one t4, it won’t be much of a problem I think. You just have to make sure that you win every battle, so that everything what is dead stays dead. I have a feeling we will see a lot more resurgence.

Pretty much this. I think the actual bonus is +1 def, +1 res, +10hp, +resurgence. It’s gonna make for a pretty monstrous Dwarf Manticore Rider, but in the end, it’s only one unit that gets the bonus.

That could still cause problems with dwellings and the like. I mean I’ve seen people get out T4s in multiplayer pretty quickly. Are you saying that just that one class of t4 gets resurgence, or just that one specific unit gets it? The first one built, I mean. Like are we talking one god tier dwarf manticore rider, or every one produced after that?

If its just the first one then cool. No problems here. But the thought of rushing giants and getting 3 resurging fire giants before turn 40 is terrifying.

Just the first one, from their wording. That first individual tier four basically becomes a “Hero” unit. All the ones after it are bog standard T4s.

^ It’s just the first one that gets the bonus so only one unit, cause yeah, otherwise it would be a bit ridiculous

    #117458

Got it today Garresh, yep, just the 1st one.

Also, you have to actually build/summon it. A dragon or something you get as a quest reward doesn’t count.

I retract my criticisms and concerns. If anything this actually makes a t4 rush via dwelling a viable strategy in 1v1s due to high first impact without screwing with balance in ffas and lategame. Really good reward. I like it.

The Empire quest are a fun addition to the game and hope that future installments add more. They motivate you more to select different paths of playing your empire.

The T4 reward is a well deserved reward for that quest and it only rewards one T4 that you have to build. Now I’m not sure how this applies to sorcerer’s since their T4 is a summons but then I only play against them I don’t normally play one.

Hey, Tombles, would it be possible to have multiple paragons by making multiple t4s in one turn so that they’re created at the same time and all get the bonus? Cause that would be fun.

Just an idea. There should be “tactics” quests as well down the road. Instead of achieving something on an empire wide level, they’re for performing a particularly difficult to achieve action on an enemy player. Maybe one for being the first to force an enemy leader into the void. Or a quest for taking and razing a city with a full enemy stack within 12 hexes. Or even one for defending a city against an army twice the size of its garrison. For balance reasons, all of these should depend on player vs player actions to prevent abusing neutral AI or bizarre behavior of units in auto.

hmm, wouldn’t that be a version of “the rich keep getting richer” in mp, since the person who did such difficult things would usually be the better/more lucky player?
