Dev Journal: First Necromancer Units

Today we take a look at the conceptual designs for first Necromancer Units.  As we posted in our last dev journal, the Necromancer can turn many types of living units into Ghoul variants using the Great Transformation spell, but of course, the Necromancer comes with its own unique unit roster.  Today we’re going to take a look at the first lower tier Necromancer units.

The Lost Souls

These are the souls of troubled people who are not able to find rest, even in death.  Lost Souls are incorporeal, making them hard to kill with physical damage, and have the Exploit Despair ability, which allows them to deal extra damage against units with low morale. When fielded with higher level Necromancer units that can reduce the morale of living units, the effectives of the Lost Souls can be greatly enhanced.  Defeating a Lost Soul during combat is tricky, as it also has the Undying ability. Undying units automatically return from the dead after a few turns in tactical combat.  Lost Souls float, and can be summoned onto the world map, making them great scout servants.

The Reanimator and Creeper

The Reanimator is the main support unit for the Necromancer.  It is able to heal undead units, which is vitally important as most of them don’t naturally regenerate.  The Renanimator has a Black Bolt ranged shot and a melee attack with its staff which doubles as a shovel. His attacks Inflict despair, giving him the chance to lower the morale of enemies.

The ability that gives the Reanimator its name allows it to reanimate bodies of the fallen, into undead puppets called Creepers. These cadavers crawl over one another like the maggots they contain. The soulless bodies know no fear, are resistant to many types of damage and can be used to tie up enemy units while the more powerful necromancer units get into position.  After the battle, the Creepers disintegrate.

Necromancers will need to make careful tradeoffs using fallen units, as they have other uses as well! The Creepers can devour corpses to rejuvenate themselves and regain lost hitpoints, for example, while the Corpus Furia spell causes dead bodies to detonate, damaging every nearby enemy.

Lost souls that refuse to die, and mindless horddes of reanimated corpses can make like difficult for the living. Of course we are developing counters that help the dead find their peace for good. Some of these abilities will find their way in the new specializations that we will be announcing soon.

New specializations! 😀 Anyway I see nice combo with Necro Wild Magic. If only Unstable Transformation could be work at Creepers.

I love both of these units and their arts. Still hope for autumn terrain type that could fit well to them.

    Looking very good 😀

But, a quick question, are units like the Reanimator going to have generic undead designs or will they have some racial variation? Because I imagine an undead Draconian Reanimator would look different to a Human or Halfling one.

That looks like a whole lot of new, interesting mechanics. I’m so looking forward to this expansion. Awesome work Triumph. Love how you keep adding to an already wonderful game.

Sounds very interesting. I expect that the monster hunter, or some warlord units, will have to gain default non physical anti undead abilities (like the crusader has with holy champion), or you’ll just make them have to take one of the anti undead specializations.

You can’t always assume that you’ll have a Golden Dragon when you need one. I’m guessing it will have innate death immunity (possibly even traded for blight, as that settles into a more specific poison based role).

undying makes disintigrate more valuable, as there will be more units you want to make go poof.

Love the synergistic design philosophy that’s going on here. Making use of enemy low morale is especially interesting (beware of bad terrain).

Interesting but those creepers don’t fear anything while archons undead are “coward”, that means they will allow a fearless unit to have spirit weakness?

This is what happens when I leave the forums for to long … UNDEAD!!!!!!! Being the massive fan of undead that I am I am truly ecstatic to see all of this here. I will cut my ravings of joy short for fear of them taking up to much space 😛 (I could go on for a while). It all looks amazing guys keep up the good work. One of the main things that attracted me to this game was the fact that we are doing away with the over done stereo types that you see in almost all fantasy. (All goblins or other non human race are evil capital E). This being applied to the necromancer is a dream come true (the number of people I encounter who can’t understand that undead can be good if the lore allows it is astounding). Anyway I am waiting with bated breath for the next up date (if it takes to long my face might turn blue :P).

Nice update and glad to see the first units. I’ve already expected there to be some sort of undead healing support unit. The most interesting part that was said in the journal was there are some units that do naturally regenerate in the necro class and a new specialization

Some little typos, you guys wrote “mindless horddes” and “like difficult”. 😀

Anyway, great job so far. I will comment on the units themselves:

Lost Souls – I was actually expecting the Carrion Bird to be the necro’s scout, but these Lost Souls sounds better already. I would imagine the terror these guys would do with some Blight Doctors around them, since they have 3 ways to inflict morale penalties.

Reanimator – Love the art on this one, was expecting to Heal Undead to show itself either like this or as a Empire Upgrade, but I guess this way is better. Is this unit is going to be living or some sort of “permanent” Ghoul? And Black Bolts, did I read it right? Are you guys going to re-introduce Death Damage?

Creeper – Now you guys managed to surprise me with this one, I was expecting some form of combat summon from the necro but not like this, and it’s really fitting. It instantly reminded me of Anvil of Dawn, there was some Undead creatures in that game that were like the creeper in concept but were more unsettling (they were a literal fusion of flesh and bones instead of many corpses crawling on each other). I think it would be obvious to assume that the Necromancer himself/herself will be able to learn this ability as a Hero Upgrade.

As for the new specialization mentioned, is it going to be only focused on fighting against Undead or it’s going to have some other “all-around” tools?

Just please tell me you are going to bring back Dread Reapers and have them do their path of decay. I love going around spoiling the land just for fun 🙂

    Creepy creepers!
    Nice.
Though, would this ability of creepers actually make sense instead of just attacking enemy and rising another creeper from the corpse (especially considering you can’t keep creepers after a battle; it’s unreasonable to heal suicide killers)?

No path of anything(unless they are 2 turn ordeals) ugly crisscrossing lines all over the map is not sexy and its not feasible in multi player to cleanse lands outside of your domain or to expend mana on aethetics

The necro units look interesting cant wait to see the higher tier ones 😛

If this class keeps looking this good I might switch classes. I’ve always loved necros in every game I’ve played, and so far it looks appropriate both mechanically and lore wise. Some interesting choices so far, especially with the scouts, but yeah very solid.

I also want to know about this.

I know it’s probably too soon to reveal it, but i’m also very curious whether black bolt is a new type of damage or it’s just a blight damage?

I’m almost certain I’ll switch. Sorc is a little monotonous with all that shock and actually fell short of (my) expectations.

Good stuff, nice article that hit the sweet spot of informing me yet piquing my interest.

    #129541

Lost souls kind of scares me a little, its a great scout sure but its a summon and the easy way to do that will be floating undead humans. I really hope the floating lost souls are randomly picked from all the races (after all thats why the undead are a class instead of a race, right?) but im doubtful as the game would need to remember each model in all lost soul units on the map, and then how does healing factor into those units coming back to life? Summon another random race lost soul or one of the same race?

The reanimator and creeper are awesome, obviously the reanimator will be racial but i hope the creeper is semi dependent on the target too.

I suspect it will be some combination of Frost/Blight on a single projectile attack.
I don’t think they will reintroduce Death Damage (Though I would love to be wrong)

Afaik, death damage returns with the necromancer class. Thats what was always said during the talk at the beta tester water cooler, but was never officially confirmed, so it could change.

But my money is on it making a return :)

Well crap, that would be awesome – I just figured that it would require rejiggering so much of the existing game, as units would need new Death Res/Weaknesses, Archons would probably have to be modified to use the new Death Damage (at least the casters) etc etc.
