Dev Journal: Frostling Queens and Royal Guards

In this concluding journal about the Frostling race units we show you the mighty Ice Queen and her Royal Guard

Frostlings are a proud and sturdy race, which have been moving towards a matriarchal society since the Frost Witches first befriended them. Their Kings today are always chosen by the High Queen and it is she who ultimately rules all the Frostling clans in the Kingdom together with her chosen husband. It is quite common for a High Queen to go through multiple Kings during her reign. The clans have a high degree of independence, but the situations where a clan goes against the explicit wishes of its High Queen are rare and usually fuelled by powerful Frostling women.

Concept Art for The Royal Guard and Queen

The Ice Queen (not to be confused with the High Queen!) is the prime example of how the Frost Witch blood improves the race as a whole. Talented women with a large amount of the magical blood streaming through their veins can become Ice Queens, who really allow the Frostlings to shine on the battlefield by bringing the full power of the icy North to bear.

Men with a lot of Frost Witch blood can become Royal Guards. They are highly trained men that use the magic in their bodies to a dangerous degree, transforming themselves into beings of ice in order to better protect the all-important Ice Queen and other Frostling women.

Most Frostling Lords and Ladies tend to have quite a bit of Frost Witch blood in their veins as well, making them taller and subtly different in appearance from standard Frostlings. It also grants them higher immunity to the cold. In courtly circles it is a matter of pride to show this off by foregoing the normal heavy thick furs and dress in light ‘summer’ clothes.

The Royal Guard: Changed to a high degree by the frost magic blood of their ancestors these men live to guard the Frostling women. Pikemen first and foremost, they strike first and deal more damage to and have higher defense against mounted units and flyers. Their active ability is Pledge of Protection, which can only target Frostling women, gives the Guard +2 defense and redirects any damage done to his charge to the Royal Guard, mitigated by 35%. Their Frost Weapons Inflict Frostbite and being made of ice gives them Arctic Concealment. As a last line of defense, once they succumb to their wounds the magic in their frozen bodies causes them to explode and deal damage to all enemies around them.

Frostlings05The Frostling army in game

The Ice Queen: The ultimate Frostling support unit, the Ice Queen is a formidable opponent, especially for races not suited to the cold. Riding a chariot drawn by polar bears, she brings her Dome of Frost wherever she goes. All units which aren’t Frostlings or have 100% Frost Protection and who stand next to her suffer -1 defense, -1 resistance and get a bit of frost damage each turn. The Ice Queen can cast an Ice Nova, which deals frost damage to all enemy units next to her with a chance to Inflict Freezing Cold. It also breaks the guard stance of all enemy units within a 3 hex radius. So you can see why you’d want to protect her!

Even on the strategic map the Ice Queen supports her race with her Arctic Nova ability which spreads the Arctic clime in an area around her, but which costs her her life.

I hope you enjoy these last Frostling units and look forward to using them, I do! Of course, what is stated here is work-in-progress and things may still change depending on balance testing and feedback, so let us know what you think!

Be sure to check back next week, when we’ll have a Christmas-themed surprise for you!

Well, Polar Bears are now a possibility as a mount for Frostling Heroes.

And interesting, the Ice Queen may be a racial unit that will not work well in mixed-race armies.

Love it, they look very cool (Though I do hope the Royal Guard style is not going to be how Frostling Male Leaders/Heroes looks, cool as it is)

Necromancers and frostling seem awesome, i can’t wait!!

    #138937

So the Royal Guard are tier 2 or tier 3 then?

I’m assuming both of these new units are tier 3?

    That’s pretty awesome :).

Sacrificing itself to spread terrain is a great idea, and Ice Nova is going to come in very handy.

    I’m excited!

Ice Nova sounds devastating! Also, to be clear, is the Frost Nova on the strategic map passive or can you choose to cast it each turn? I can see really cool aspects to both ideas.

We haven’t fully balanced the arctic nova yet. Worst case scenario: it consumes the Queenie 😉

And yep, the Royal Guard is the Pikeman.

The Royal Guard seems like an cool unit and fits in nicely with the Frostling theme.

The Ice Queens are definitely something I didn’t expect. Polar bear chariots seem a little out there but it is an awesome idea. The whip should be made of ice in the animation though. If you can put in some ice particle effects that would be cool too. Sparkly blue particle effect should be everywhere on these Frostling units

Is the royal guard T2 or T3?

Does the ice nova freeze water?

Is this not the coolest thing ever? This is like the closest thing to bear cavalry without actually being bear cavalry.

Cool, FROSTlings….. I see what you did there.

Is the Guard T3 or T2? abilities sound T3, but could be T2. Also, their’s is the only ability so far that differentiates by gender in 3(we had seduce in 1/2…).

    I think it’s gotta be a T2 Guard/Martyr. Otherwise, there’s no other T2 beside the Mammoth Rider.

    So as to summarize;
    T1:
    Irregular: Icescaper
    Infantry: Raider
    Archer: Harpoon Thrower
    T2:
    Cavalry: Mammoth Rider
    Pikeman: Royal Guard
    Support: Ice Witch
    T3:
Frost Queen (Mounted + Support? just Support? Cavalry?)

Dome of Frost sounds remarkably like Disgusting Stench, but a bit more aggresive.

As a side question, can we expect Frost Elemental getting awesome with a few new, cool abilities(pun intended)?

I do think it is fun if she has an big area attack that she can use after charging the enemy. I think its best if the nova cost her like half her hit points. Then you will indeed need some skill or a bunch of those guards to keep her alive. If the nova cost her whole life I think I would hesitate to much to use it since I do tend to try to keep my units alive and level them up. I think its better to use sheep units and not the most expensive as kamikazes.

I would also like if the male Heroes are not to much frost queen looking. The female could be more ‘pure blood” frost witches but I rather have the male more underdog frostling looking. I always liked that the frostling looked like a kind of arctic mongols.

Their active ability is Pledge of Protection, which can only target Frostling women, gives the Guard +2 defense and redirects any damage done to his charge to the Royal Guard, mitigated by 35%.

Is it intended that there be no synergy between the def bonus and damage absorbed? Because if it works like the Martyr ability the +2 def on the guard is not going to have any effect on the damage absorbed from the Queen/Witch. It would if it was the woman who received the def bonus rather than the guard.

…which can only target Frostling women.

Does this mean unit gender is being re-introduced or does it simply target a specific unit list? What about leaders/heroes? If they can be affected by the Pledge does that mean all Frostling leaders/heroes will be women (otherwise there’d be no point in choosing male heroes/leaders).

Does the ice nova freeze water?

I hope it does or will if it doesn’t.

The frostling units look lots of fun to play. From the sound of his description, does the guard have physical weakness, being ice and all?

Guys, I’ve updated the Wikia now, and it basically contains all we know so far, neated down as much as I could:

    http://age-of-wonders-3.wikia.com/wiki/Frostlings

I’m curious about the Explosive Death of the Royal Guards…will it be 10/10 (Frost/Phys) just like the fire variant? I do think we’re getting us a new animation here… Anyway, they’re the ultimate protective unit for them Support Frost Queens.

Hmmm. T3 Supports. This is gonna be some very fast AD supports, and some pretty strong Theocrat synergies here. I think Frostling Theocrat is gonna be Necro’s ultimate nightmare.

I think you are confusing things here. The battlefield ability Ice Nova wont cause a loss of life (at least it isn’t mentioned here) but the strategic ability Arctic Nova that spreads arctic climate (which I hope isn’t optional since it clearly shows how Frost Queens are bound to the cold – with all it’s pros and cons).

Really looking forward to the Royal Guard as well. Pillar Stylites will be much more interesting after this expansion. Also I’m wondering if every Race will get a 2nd T2 instead of 3 T1’s (so far Goblins have Butcher and Frostlings Royal Guards (assuming they are not T3)).

One other thing about the Guards though .. I hope they will eventually look a little less like fantasm warriors. A somewhat darker blue would be welcomed 🙂

jupiii! Frostlings are back in the big way 😀

i only would like to adress two things

-first, after queen would go nova on camp. map can you make a marker? like frozen statue, or small tomb? no mechanic bonus , only small visual remainder of brave queen dying for the Greater cause 🙂

-sec, give her more clothes 😀 she is a queen 😀 she is supposed to be dignified ^^ not look like one of dark elf witches from warhammer fantasy battle . look at ice queen from narnia the movie ^^ or lady galadriel ^^ sorry for little nitpicking

overall, GREAT JOB 😀 necromancing + ice queen… Death was never so cold 😀

Speak for yourself. She’s showing some thigh but its not that sexualized. Looks more powerful and arrogant than anything…which kind of fits since she’s a queen that can control the *weather* and bring winter wherever she goes. I’d be a little haughty too. 😉

    – So does the Royal Guard ability target any Frostling woman? Sayyy, the Bard?

    – Does it work similarly to racial tags?

    – Do all races get them?

    – Do Dragons do less damage to Women? (Maidens are for kidnapping, not squishing!)

    – Does the Frost Queen sound super powerful when used as a Sorcerer, or is it just me?

This is really making me wonder, does Necromancer have Infantry/Archer support? Those two types have really gotten the least exciting upgrades, especially when compared to stuff like pistols, teleportation and healing powers (which all alter the play-style of the units in question). Handy upgrades, sure, but not exciting.

    EDIT:

One other thing about the Guards though .. I hope they will eventually look a little less like fantasm warriors. A somewhat darker blue would be welcomed :)

This is a very good point, in my opinion.

I wonder if a martyr can mitigate the damage of the royal guard while it mitigate the damage to the queen, after all they are two different abilities and could stack.

They said that these are the higher frostlings units so even the royal guard could be a T3, maybe it will have 100 hp and 10 damage so you are encouraged to use to protect even frost witches that are T2.

    #138968

Looks more powerful and arrogant than anything…which kind of fits since she’s a queen that can control the *weather* and bring winter wherever she goes.

And the description specifically mentions that royalty wear less clothes. Being super cold resistant is a status symbol.

I absolutely love this. It seems that Necromancer units fit really well with Frostlings considering that they are probably going to have 100% cold immunity. 😀
Damn, so we are going to play as White Walkers from Game of Thrones? Amazing!

The thing that I am concerned is that units from old factions are going to need some buffs to be able to compete with Frostlings. So far, every Frostling unit has more utility than any other faction, and that makes them good in the midd/late game, unlike other factions where you would stop making your tier 1/2 faction units as soon as you get your class units up and going.

Just compare these awesome Frost Queens to something like Gryphon Riders or Shock Troopers. For example with Warlord, once I get to the Manticores, Phalanxes and Warbreeds I don’t really have a reason to make Gryphon Riders or Shock Troopers, while Frost Queens are always useful. I know that they are changing and improving old factions a bit, but I don’t think it will be enough from what I’ve seen, maybe that is just me.

Oh and yes, that artwork of Frost Queen and Royal Guard is absolutely stunning, and their in-game models are great as well. Really good work, I can’t wait for the expansion! 🙂

RMZ, the other races are getting some reworks. Like goblin pikemen are getting bumped a tier and given life stealing and stiff.

Also yeah now that you mention it the royal guards are showing a ton of skin. I get the feeling they’re probably lesser lords and nobles who select to become part of the “queensguard”? Kind of like in game of thrones. I can’t see a single unit of theirs which isn’t awesome.

You know. I’m not sure what’s more terrifying about the ice queen: That she can unleash cold novas which break guards and really mess stuff up, or that she wears high heels made of ice. That’s gotta be hard as hell to stand like that, but she just honeybadgers it up like she just don’t care. High heels are hard enough to balance in anyways! Not that I’d know anything about that…
