Dev Journal: The Unifier Victory Condition

It’s Good Friday, so it’s time to talk about the new Good Victory Condition! This is called the Unifier Victory, and will be available in the upcoming Eternal Lords expansion.

Background

Many new systems come together in this new victory condition. Previously we explained that we’ve introduced alternate ways of expansion, through investing money in strengthening relations with the world around you,  relations that are now tracked per race. Declaring war on an Indy city will damage relations with the race that owns that city, as will migrating or razing a city.

BeacomVictory_active

High Race Relations, means Independent Towns of that race will like you better and even Enemy Towns might turn on their owners and join you by sending a Liberation Quest. Loyal Vassals provide steady income and can provide support in time of need.

Liberate CityPeace Keepers with high race relations can trigger towns to turn on their less benevolent masters.

High Race Relations also means you will gain Race Experience at a quicker rate, meaning you will gain Race Governance upgrades for your people faster.

So where does all of this lead?  You still have enemies to defeat, after all. Military force is always an option – a peace keeper’s happy economy can field a big army.   But Eternal Lords introduces an alternate route: The Unifier Victrory Condition.

Building Beacons

When the Unifier Victory is enabled in the Map Setup Screen, and once Level 3 Race Governance of a particular race is reached, the construction of the Unifier Beacon is unlocked in cities of that race.

Beacon1

Building Beacons is expensive, but a late game metropolis has no trouble producing one in a reasonable amount of time.

This beacon sends the message to the entire world that you are the benevolent leader destined to unite all races in a harmonious empire.  The construction is a two-step process; first you construct the tower, costing a ton of gold and then you light the beacon, costing a ton of mana. Each steps send a strong message to the people of the other realms, creating unrest by applying a penalty to the happiness of your enemies cities and units, while you gain a bonus to yours.

Beacon2sSee, you’re destined to Unify the world!

Message… but not everybody agrees!

To Victory!

Of course the other leaders are notified when the construction of the Beacon Commences, so prepare yourself to be attacked. Using the default settings, players need to build Beacons in cities of two races, but this can be changed pending player’s preferences. Of course more Beacons will take longer to obtain as you’ll need to up the Race Governance for each race.

BeaconOverview

A handy Overview lists the status of Beacons for all players.

The Unifier Victory condition is a great option for more defensive players, it provides an alternate route to winning the gamethan pure conquest. Leaders with Creation Magic, the new Keeper of the Peace Specialization and even Rogues and Theocrat have skills that work well with this play style, helping to raise happiness and relations with independent towns.  Next week we’ll have a new video where we will show this play style in action!

Unifier-VictoryYou’ve Won. May there be peace, love and happiness!

Have a great Weekend!

Sorry for the double post, but I forgot to ask something: Does the AI breaks the alliance with you even if Allied Victory is active?

Oh, I wanna be a rogue when i’m gunning for unifier victory. o.o

Be quiet and play nicely with everyone….

Set up Dark pact and age of deception…

Then construct the beacon and light it up.

Massive unhappiness for anyone that dares to dow on me!

    Evil evil.

By the way, since the Dev Journal is out for it, I should point out(since it wasn’t mentioned) that Beacons can NOT be rush built.

This reminds me a lot of the Spell of Mastery from Master of Magic, only there every AI would gang up on the one starting to cast it.

Will the AI’s you’re not at war with (no enemy penalty) start breaking peace when you construct Beacons or can they choose to offer alliances instead (depending on relations)?<br>
Would allies share your huge Base Empire happiness bonus during Unification?

    I played Master of Magic.

I never saw the AI gang up on someone casting spell of mastery unless it was me. If another AI cast it, they would all still come after me just like before. In general, the AI simplistically teamed up against the lone human player.

I do remember back in those days thinking what a 100% improvement that game would be if it had multi-player. So many wasted abilities against the AI….

By the way, when you built it, the text says, you need a lot of Mana to activate it. Hopefully, this means you need Mana in the Form of Casting Points (like 1000)?

There’s a spelling mistake in the above picture. (in case this wasn’t pointed out already)

In the description for the Unity Beacon Tower, the mistake is in the first sentence. It reads “constructing this will inform the world of your intentions to unite ***the*** all under your banner”. I imagine this word should be “them”. 😛

This is a victory condition that can be turned on/off, I hope, and not unalterable?
yes, you can turn it off, like the seals. What do you mean by not unalterable?

You can set the number of beacons required, if that is what you are asking. Each races gets one beacon. So, if you have set it to 2 beacons, you’ll need 2 races at champion plus…

Actually , I hope they will show us how “usefull” the shadowborn specialization will be. For torchbearers the unifier condition seems pretty easy to achieve and most player will choose this specialization unless authors of AoW3 shows us how can we achieve victory through grey guard and shadowborn specialization.

There was artcile about “skills” not how to achieve victory through them like with Torchebearers specialization with unifier condition.

@ Yadrian, working out how to win is half the fun of playing the game surely?

Question: what happens when you capture a city with a beacon? It seems logical that the beacon would no longer count towards the victory of the player that built it, but will it count for the player who captured it? I’m not sure if it should since capturing some symbol does not mean you’ve suddenly become a peaceful unifier 🙂

It gets destroyed. So protect your Beacons well!

Cheers, seems like a logical way to deal with capturing beacon cities!

ooh i just realized if a player is going on a genocidal crusade evicting every race but their own from cities theyre actively working against this kind of victory as you may be left with less races on the map than required to achieve this unifier victory.

Which is why you can not toggle the ‘Vanquish’-victory-condition on/off 😀

    But yeah.

Hah! Yes, my one hope for this was that the city in which you constructed the tower would graphically get the tower, like the class structures, and that does indeed appear to be the case – awesome.

Yeah they really need to add a graphic on the map for these towers. Considering how important they are.

Also to those wondering about Shadowborn victory. Both of the current victory conditions kind of were Shadowborn victories. The Seal one grants the person that unlocks them great power but also opens up the world to whatever evils are in the others planes that Merlin tried to lock away. And traditional world conquest by the sword isn’t very nice either.

Going by some of the screenshots it does have a graphic, which is why I am so pleased.

And aye, the Seals especially are a Shadowborn goal.
