Dev Journal: Tigrans Part II

Today we reveal the second part of the Tigran Race! In Part 1 we discussed the background and shared characteristics of Tigrans, as well as the Prowler, Cheetah and Chariot units. Today we take a look at the Shredder, Sun Guard,  Mystic, Dire Panther and Sphinx. You might notice that’s 1 unit extra compered to other races; you’ll see why below!

Sun Guard

SunGuard

This armored Pikeman is the only unit that resembles something of a organized military unit. These pikemen carry Sun Shields, giving them +2 defense and resistance from non flanking attacks and +60% fire protection. Sun Guards also have the Guardbreaker abilty, meaning that melee strikes from the unit will stop their targets from guarding. Sun Guards are flexible units, but have slightly weaker stats than other pikemen to reflect their lack of specialization in any one role.

“The Tigran Sun Guards encircled the shrine of the Scarlet Destroyer. I tried to convince the feline spearmen that in the Commonwealth, all share the Shrine, but they believe those shrines hold pieces of their god, Yaka. Though they had little armor, their catlike agility rendered our archers ineffective. We had to clear them out, but they fought with the ferocious zeal of jungle cats. I fear the cost to the Empire if all our shrines are so abused.” – “Report on Religious Tranquility” by Enforcer Tendoniskadin

SunGuards

Mystic

The Mystic is an offensive support unit, who hurls magic bolts at ranged targets and can use the Break Control ability to remove mind controlling effects from her allies. Where other support units have abilities that buff allies or debuff enemies, the mystic can transform into a Panther, sacrificing ranged power for melee strength and speed.

“The Tigran religion has changed since I last encountered them. They once envied men, doing all they could to prove they weren’t animals. Now there is a powerful faction of Mystics that teach them to embrace their inner beast for their sun god. Some Mystics literally do.  One morphed into a ravenous hellcat.  Despite my most desperate attempts to reason with it, the creature tried to eat me.  So while pretending to fight, I deliberately tripped and tumbled down a gorge.” — “Where’s Symba?” by Ham the Wanderer

Mystics

Dire Panther

Mystics can transform into Dire Panthers, powerful and agile melee units which can pounce on enemies to rapidly cross great distances in combat. Its bloodthirsty abilty ensures that it does extra damage vs bleeding units, while its Coup de Grace abilty deals extra damage vs immobilized units.

Panther

People ask me how one negotiates with an oversized feral black tiger. It’s a stupid question, because when you see one it’s probably too late. Still, I seem to recall I said something like, ‘Whoah! Nice Kitty. That’s one seriously big cat. No, no! Bad Kitty. I’m not food. Stop! Don’t eat me!’” — “Where’s Symba?” by Ham the Wanderer

Shredder

The Archer-soldier of the Tigran. Unlike the average archer, Shredders are quite strong in melee as well. They throw boomerang like knives, which a skilled shredder can curve around corners, allowing them to ignore line of sight penalties. Their knives also cause bleeding wounds, creating a synergy with the Prowler who does extra damage vs bleeding units.

Shredder

“The double-bladed skalj buzzed over our heads like a swarm of angry hornets. A group of Tigran shredders flanked our diplomatic envoy. Our maddened horses charged furiously forward. The cabin of our carriage filled with a spray of splinters. Hundreds of Skalj blades embedded themselves into the side of our vehicle. Hostile Tigrans scrambled up the carriage walls. They cut the throats of our drivers and let our horses run. The diplomatic message was quite obvious.” – “Commonwealth Peace Offerings” by Vagon the Peacemaker

Sphinx

In rare occurrences, Tigrans are born with wings and a more feline body. These creatures are called Sphixes and are revered as holy emissaries from Yaka. They have the Sun Disc Ability, allowing them shoot a ray as hot as the sun, damaging all units in its path.  This flying tier III irregular can cause fear, has mind control immunity and True Sight.

Sphinx2

“We all knew what dwelt in Hillside Tomb.  The clever thing offered fortunes to anyone able to outwit it. Caleb Withers went in a beggar and left royalty, but thousands of others never returned. The Commonwealth judged this bargain illegal. They brought their war machines against the creature. It called down the sun to incinerate the advance.  It retreated into its lair. Foolishly, they followed, but it was ready. Traps slowed warriors; the creature finished them off. Even disciplined troops trembled with fear. Eventually, the Commonwealth drove it away using overwhelming numbers. That’s the price of bargaining with a sphinx.” – “Monsters of Hillside” by Olden Withers

PS: The official announce is getting very close now! We didn’t announce this week because we had some more work to do on marketing assets, as well as didn’t want to announce during the hectic times of GDC/PAX.

Tibbles, you might have the best av on these forums, and it goes perfectly with tigran updates.

The kaiser helmets on the skeletons are a nice touch, they are very different from other helmet styles in the game. Is the kneeling and praying pose set up just for the screenshot, or are those the crawlers mentioned in earlier journals that normally slide around on their knees? They look cool regardless of what is going on there.

If you zoom on the screenshot you can see that the sphinx is a ‘ghoul’ and that you can switch to the next unit a ‘cadaver’ so they do appear to be usable!

Awesome units! I wonder if that is the skeletons (cadavers) usual combat animations? Looks like the are on their knees worshiping the sphinx.

Originally the Sphinxes didn’t haven wings, did those fly too high to the sun and burned them, I wonder?

Good Hypothesis, but I’m still waiting on the official explanation.

(and it seems Shredders inflict bleeding through Razor Projectiles so it still checks twice with Hunter’s Finesse),

It’s been confirmed that double checks aren’t intended behaviour, and the Dev’s are squashing each instance they come across. Don’t hope to hard for this.

I wonder if support boosts like Inflict Bleeding Wounds and Long Strider stick upon transformation. Phasing Panthers anyone?

It’ll be a different units, and no longer be a support. I haven’t played AD yet(Or tigrans, for that matter), but I bet it won’t.

Just imagined a sabotaging Sphinx from the Dreadnought upgrade using your battlements as a scratching post.

“No kitty! Not the tower! Why do you have to ruin everything?!?”

    +1.

    8 hex ranged flyer?

where do you get that hex range number from? It’s wrong, and even the “correct” number could still be changed, as there was talk about it pretty recently.

Sun Guards sound interesting as enemies: if you flank them you negate both 2 defense and 2 resistance. They have same armor of halberdier that sounds weird, but goblin marauders have too so….

Mystic will be surely a very funny unit to play. I guess they will also help to absorb attacks since chariots are range and could be inferior to other T2 (expecially mammoth) cavalry in melee.

Shredder will be great at sieges, but I don’t agree that is good to melee: melee damage is surely good but 35 hp with just 8 defense and 7 resistance means that avoiding melee is the best idea.

Sphinx seems a tricky unit to use like the eagle.

I noticed that also the 1 figure racial units are increasing: before we had only the gryphon exception and was a T3, now frostlings and tigrans have two of them each: the T3 and the T2 cavalry!

The crawler changed his name in cadaver?

Not bad, shapeshifter how lovely…. and shamans will actually be able to shapeshift into bears like Brain hinted? Lovely :D

When did he do that? He only hinted that there is a shapeshifter in the game, which we have now seen.

@Glow Irregular, explorer. I get the number from my worst of fears, i’m certain a dev did read my comment and nerfed them 😀 Sry Tigran and rogue players but nothing will stand in the way of my Frostling Empire =)

I wonder if someone noticed that chaning into panther form is an ability called “Were Panther” – if it is ability – it probably could be acquirable on other units if approriate items / MCU were created. Some time ago people on forum were suggesting were wolf units that can morph into the wolf. With this mechanics it suddenly becomes possible 🙂

I really hope we won’t have to wait another week for the patch notes…

I hope so too, since you’ll probably need a few days to read through all of them. 😉

Why devs WHY??? After all this time of waiting and hoping you lead me on and string me along and get me all happy and ready to make my decision and then you pull this???? You have some nerve treating me like this and I don’t know that I can ever forgive you for such a heinous crime…now instead of me focusing soley on my favorite age of wonders race of frostlings, nooooow I have to split my time between the Tigrans because they look so damn amazing and their aggressive and fast playstyle seems like it will along with a shape shifting unit just made tigrans boost waaaay up on my favorites list. Still a Frostling for life, but I can take a summer vacation being a Tigran. Oh, no release date or beta announcement? Oh well, I waited 10 years for another Age of awonders game, so I can wait a few more weeks.

PS. I wouldn’t be opposed to maybe semi secretly sending me just the mac update portion so I can at least play the base game with Golden realms. Lets just keep this between us and the rest of the people that see this post ;p

When? In the druid thread. Why use the awesome new mechanic for just one new unit, besides he did so in the Archdruid thread, why hint of a Tigran exclusive mechanic over there.
…. quoting someone on shamans transforming into bears, is Brain that mean and pure Evil * smile*? T.T

Perhaps an elegant solution to this would be to allow the shaman to have a transform ability, turning it into a bear.

I think something, somewhere has the ability to transform in battle…

    *smiles*.

To me that implies that the shaman can’t, but there is a unit that can.

I’m on your side though, I want the shaman to transform too.

Maybe there will be new bear summon at least, with polar bears and animation implemented. Shapeshafting shaman would be a dream cime true but you’re probably right.

Ah ok, I thought the Razor Projectiles and Shock Projectiles skills were intended to do that, otherwise they’d just be Inflict Bleeding Wounds and Inflict Shocking (why create skills that do exactly the same as already existing skills?). Shock Projectiles also gives double check on Shocking if used together with Star Blades.

I was confident that i would be playing as a Frostling but now after watching these vicious looking cats, i am not so sure anymore.
Love the mystical, Egyptian theme to them. It fits so well to the necromancer class!
The wait for this expansion is killing me, but it is sure worth the long wait!

I don’t think so. There’re different concepts of sphinx in different cultures. This one is more Greek-looking like from King Edyp.

Concept and culture does’t matter. Two flying cats(exactly lions) – too match for one game. Sphinx without wings and human face(Yaka’s for example) – really good sphinx, but not this.

    After analysis, some things:
I like how the new races have such powerful intra-racial synergies. I hope to see that sort of thing in the patch for the old races.

The bleeding wounds thing is obvious here, but there’s a more subtle thing going on with tigrans obviously being set up for flanking, possibly reliant on it. The athletics ability, pounce, ranged cavalry, pikes with guardbreaking, and T3 flying irregular are all designed for flanking; that much is very clear. I predict tigrans will be very reliant on getting flanks to succeed (if they’re that good at getting them but don’t need to, it would be pretty op) which means the tactical AI could be a problem.

The Sun Guard: Looks like it’s meant as a support. High defense in the front with poor attack and guardbreaker; it’s clearly meant to be a wall to protect fragile units and give others a chance to get around behind to deliver flank attacks. That will be really useful for tigrans to have; it really fills in a gap and has a solid role, not just an infantry unit with bonuses against cavalry/flyers. I love it. It also makes the frost queen’s ability that breaks guard seem a little less exciting. I wonder if we’ll see any other units gaining the guardbreaker ability?

The Mystic: It has 36 MP in the first screenshot with an archdruid in the background; presumably after longstrider. The second screenshot is from the same battle after transforming (you can see the battle behind) and it still has 36 MP. Now, maybe panthers just have 36 MP period. But I’m guessing what it really means is that the panther form retains whatever upgrades the untransformed version has, which means we will have devout panthers or panthers with phase and inflict stun. But it’s also an animal. Will it get the benefits of Beast Mastery in that form?

    Also, what are “Magic Bolts”?

The Shredder: My only real comment about this I have to wonder what they’re doing with the Orc Razorbows, because this makes them completely redundant. I’m guessing razorbows are getting an overhaul.

The Sphinx: The synergy with rogue is obvious. Poor draconians! They had the only flying T3 with backstab but they can’t compete with this. Hopefully something will make up for it. Also, this might mean we’ll see other classes besides warlords and rogues using explorer. Who knows.

Also, I thought tigrans would make good theocrats but it looks like they have the only T3 who can’t be devout. Hm.

Alright, now I’m unsure what race/class I have to play first. Something Tigran related was like 4th or 5th on the list. But this is amazing. I’ll have to rework everything now…

Few questions on the Mystics though:
    – Do dire panthers share their experience level with the Mystics? So gold transforms to gold? And experience gained by the panthers is also gained by the mystics?
    – Do dire panthers benefit from Arch Druid Empire Upgrades and do Arch Druid Empire Upgrades that target Support Units disappear when transformed?
    – If a mystic transforms into a dire panther and gets killed, is it able to resurge with the mystical city upgrade?

Mythologically speaking the Sphinx and Manticore have VERY different backgrounds and behavior. Plus you’re forgetting about the scorpion tail.

Mythologically – maybe, but in game I see two same models, because of developer’s laziness. Look screenshot attentively and you’ll see that sphinx tale look same as manticore scorpion tale.

Bah, we finally got the Tigran update, and people are whining about the beta. It’s hard to be a dev…

I’m loving the information about Tigrans, but I’d also like to find out what the changes to the existing content will be. Because what we’ve been told so far suggests they’ll be extensive. Also, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to purchase the expansion right away.
