That Gamespot review made no sense. Maybe if he’d played the Dreadnought for the explosions, he would’ve given it a higher score or something. I don’t know.
All in all really nice scores. Just a shame that niche games like this never get to score over a 9, while some fps, GTA or what have you get way overrated.

I guess it’s just what LordTheRon says, in that there is one marking scheme for FPS and other action games and a different one for strategy and more niche titles.

You are right about that. Some game series like gta or cod will never get a low score. Not because they are that good but more likely due to the amount of people playing it. You can see titles very high on the best games of the year lists which are besically a reskin with some extra levels/different perks.
On steam aow3 is now 9th on the most buyed game list. I hope the reviews will remain positive and the game will reach more players who never heard about the series.

A 7 out of 10 is a good score, at least it should be. For some reason, this generation thinks everything is either a 1 or a 10, which I find baffling. That said, Gamespot is a terrible site and lost all credibility after the ‘Kane and Lynch 2’ debacle and should be ignored.

It should be a good score, but let’s face it, for most sites (including Gamespot) 7 signifies an average game rather than a good one. One of the reasons Rockpapershotgun is the best PC games site on the internet is that they don’t give scores at all – I trust their opinion far more than just about anywhere else.

I wish they would do away with scores and just go over good points and bad points. I mean, how do you quantify awesomeness or suckiness? Plus, there is perception. Age of Wonders may be an 8 or 9, but some folks (heretics) are not into turn based stuff. It would be a 5 to them. The gamers I work with are prime examples. They talk sports games like the Madden series like it is the second coming, but would not like the stuff like this I get into.

And.. finishing the review does not mean that I stopped playing. I really like this game.
My conclusion in (broken) english:
Age of Wonders 3 does a lot of things in a good way. It has the potential to keep fans glued to their screens for years. Compared with previous titles, you could say that six races is a bit low. The game plays like an intriguing round of chess and focuses on a strategic empire-building proces with the goal to crush your enemies through deep tactical combat. Both elements are well executed. Occasional odd AI won’t spoil the nice experience. Summarized: A challenging game for strategists (whether they were a fan of the older installments or not). And with all the possibilities offered by both the Random Map Generator and the editor, we are settled for a long time to come.metacritic user reviews
