Well, it’s gonna be MY first PvP experience.

Anyway, Melenis the Risen is her full name, unless misinformation is part of the Dev Journal’s “unintentional” information too…

Oh, and that spell he’s researching has not been mentioned in the Dev Journal about the Necro spells.

And it’s turn 4, so maybe he already Ghouled that city….

Doubt it, and it does sort of make sense, being as she is back from the dead, again, and all.

Yep, well, they did mention that they hadn’t shown everything a Necro had, and it could well be a Necro Empire Upgrade rather than a spell.

I suspect a Necromancer starts out with their first city Ghouled, so that they actually can get immediate access to their class units etc if they choose to go down that research path.

This looks very good to me. I can definitely imagine me getting into some multiplayer games using such a system. I especially look forward to large team games, even such things as using the LOTR map already available.

Thanks devs, great work as usual.

If both of the people are online will we still be able to do tactical combat? thats a feature I’d miss while duking it out with my friends.

if it could do that, it would be the ultimate game IMO. I am so-so on the idea of PBEM without, probably try it a bit. But if you could arrange to square off with tactical against your opponents…awesome.

i’m obsessing over that new piece of terrain that i think Ravenholme pointed out – i’m very happy for all those that were asking for PBEM to come back
now, to stare at the calendar until next friday 🙂

Actually it was confirmed that it will be 2 spells that will give access to Ghouls. One is the good old Animate Ruins and the other will turn a living city but will cost more research.

My best bet here is that they cheated here for the sake of playtesting (or trolling 😉 ), either by using a code or by crafting this map in the editor. One of the option in the editor allows you to assign starting techs to a Leader, and you can even put secret spells and techs from other classes if I’m not mistaken.

IIRC in the Golden Realms preview video, Tombles started with all Wild Magic spells available even thought he wasn’t much ahead in that game.

And he has a Temple of the Eternal Serpent build without even exploring the Lost City…at turn 2.(or something)

So yeah, that’s a possibility to.

I sincerely hope this brings in droves of new players to give the game the funding and support it needs to keep evolving.

    Great work!

It will! As some already pointed out, this way of playing is very appealing for a certain player demographic (wife, full time job, kids), myself included (minus the kids lol).

I can definitly play a few different games/maps, 1-3 turns a day. Have a sip of Iced Tea and enojy every little detail and nunance. Which is completely different than sitting for 6-10 hours straight playing in a frantic online game with 3 minute turns.

The game will shine, especially when you can (actually) make tactical decisions such as building a city on that perfect spot to get that ability you want from a dwelling. Seeing which item works best for what hero, or just being able to move all your units lol 🙂

It will be an incredible feature to the game and I cant wait! Thanks Triumph, you guys are the definition of awesome!

PS: Vaportrails, are you a Rush fan? Please say yes! Awesome band 😉

Wopieeee, I still play some PBEM with an old game called Civilization Call to Power. Finally this feature in a modern game!

Possible, but I think that is for all subsequent cities. I really wouldn’t be surprised if you start out with your first city ghouled, otherwise a Necro would be at a severe disadvantage because his ability to get class units could potentially be research gated in more ways than actually just researching the units.

Pretty sure their first city will be automatically ghouled, so that they can get access to their class units from at least one place.

This is my first post in the forum even though I’ve read it from time to time since the game was launched. But I really wanted to thank you guys at Triumph! You really do a great job! 🙂 With PBEM I will now be able to play multiplayer for the first time! That’s what I was waiting for to buy the expansions, and maybe also another copy of the whole game for my wife (yes, some do play AoW :D)!

The only feature missing now is to allow tactical combat between humans when both are connected. That would be awesome and I guess a central server would allow that!

    #152724

Can’t wait to try it out and have some MP games against friends for the first time since none of us can sit down for too long of a time for one sitting. It’ll also be nice to have several games going at once. =>

I am not sure at all necromancers would be at a disadvantage if not starting with a ghouled city. Their first unit is a spell just like rogues, and like rogues or other classes, they will need to research their other class units as well.

Ghouls are a totally different thing. A necromancer who doesn’t want to play with ghouls will still be able to get all his class units I guess. I expect the game to allow such versatility so people who don’t want to play evil necros can stick to normal race troops and their class units.

This is the feature I bought the game for – can’t wait! I’ve got a couple of friends who’ve been holding off on picking up the game until we could play via PBEM. My life doesn’t have anything resembling the time for real-time multiplayer.

Finally. I wasn’t expecting it anymore.

Not the best solution for PBEM, but better than no PBEM at all.

Again the question: Will it be available 10 years or even longer?

Got a feeling one of the wrinkles for a Necromancer will be that Undead Cities will be the only way to get their class units, what with their class units all being undead.

(Deathbringer, being racial and all, is just a specialised Ghoul, for example).

So other than their summoning scout, they will need an Undead city to produce their class stuff.

Also, all their class abilities/empire upgrades will be attuned to buffing undead, so I’m pretty sure that a good necromancer will have to find a way to use the undead (and Ghouls) whilst maintaining a good alignment. Just like Rogues can cause civil unrest, plagues of brigands etc and still be good.

Ghoul is just a trait that can be sticked onto any living unit. I don’t think you’ll NEED a ghouled city for your class units, though no doubt will they benefit.

I agree with Gloweye here. For example, Dark Ritual will allow the necromancer to sacrifice population on the target friendly city in order to spawn an undead unit. But it doesn’t say the city has to be undead. And I guess, it doesn’t have to. So it means necromancers will have many ways to spawn their units thus having an undead city at the very beginning is not compulsory.

    A quick question.
So my understanding of how PBEM will work is basically, player A starts turn one makes his move, then upload the game from there, then player B downloads the game and makes his move and then uploads the game when he’s done. So what happens when player B attacks player A, and they have to fight a strategics battle?

Nope, as of now, battles between human players are always quick-battle only. Against the AI you would have the choice for manual or automatic/quick-battle.

But your up- and download way is right.

    Kind regards,

I honestly don’t think it will have that huge an impact on the number of people buying the game – it will have some, sure, but I can guarantee it will be pretty minor.

Still, its a nice feature to have, looking forward to more exciting Dev Journals in the future.

More pressingly, in that last screenshot, what exactly is that landscape feature obscured by the army panel? That IS new, if I’m not mistaken – Looks like a plateau style mountain.

I definitely made a leap there, but the origin of that assumption came from seeing several people asking for it on various websites. I suppose i just wish more people knew about the game(and any AoW game!). I tend to get excited for new updates.

    😀

Well even though I don’t see the point in playing PBEM I am glad it is added for those who do. For me there is no point playing a game if you can’t set a little time to play it. If I don’t have minimum 1/2 hour to play a game then there is no point in playing. The who play one or two turns then wait a week before you can play your next turn is not my cup of tea. But I’m always for the more options the better.

What you can do is get a LOT of games going, like say a dozen games, which should leave you with several games to make moves for each day.

I play online chess where you have 3 days to make a move. Sounds too slow? Well at times I have had up to 30 games going at the same time, meaning on average I have about 10 chess positions to look at in a day. I can make myself as busy as I want, if thats not enough, then I can pile on more games.

OK STOP – Right now…. Hold up…… WHOA!!!!!!

You just completly killed the ENTIRE point of PBEM. The most vital purpose it served is it allowed easy multiplayer WITHOUT the need for a centralized server! So my great-great-great-grandkids could set up a system with a modern-day email server on a local network and play an “ancient” classic video game with their friends.

What happens when that central server is no longer available? Even 30 years from now if I get an itch to play, will I be able to?

When I first started reading, I was REALLY excited – finally a way to play multiplayer with ZERO internet requirement. Than I saw you were making it server-based… I would MUCH prefer a DECENTRALIZED server approach. Release the Source Code (and binary) for the server, and give us the option to enter the PBEM servers address. This would have the ADDED benefit of allowing us to make our own ladders etc. as well. It would also be AWESOME if you could use it to play standard multiplayer games as well.

You have a good point strager.

Perhaps we will also be able to use a custom server for your PBEM games as well as triumph’s?

I highly appreciate the PBEM Feature. It’s great to have it back.
Can you add an Option to configure email Play or host a Linux/Unix Server app for this by our own, please ?

Knowing how Server Services experience shutdown like with GameSpy, it would surely help to make Age of Wonders endure to survive the future.

There might be a chance for this to happen when/if the official ones go down. However, I believe they’re not planning to let that happen anytime soon.
