since i saw they’d be demo-ing in germany i’ve been checking and about twenty minutes ago new videos are on youtube, in german, just search by upload date
I’m off to watch… and maybe learn germanNovember 8, 2013 at 15:40 #12498I can follow more of this than I thought I would. Guess my German isn’t that bad 🙂
Though It’s probably more because that girl pronounces things very clearly.November 8, 2013 at 15:44 #12499save everyone else the 10-15 minutes it took to find this.
Djurre Van Dijk= Sikbok?
Out of curiosity, is the German/German speaking target audience larger than the English speaking one? Just wondering why the Germans get the demo first (and very very jealous as well!)
No matter, my gf is german, and I’ve been putting off learning the deutsche, so this is ok.
random impressions and questions, written as I watch this:
– the ‘cloth’ map, or whatever you may call it, looks wonderful.
-I personally don’t like that the units are on the top part of the screen, and the mini map and leader portraits at the bottom, but this is a minor thing and I suspect I’ll get used to it. After all, I did get used to Rome2’s u.i.
-battering rams (100 gold) seem expensive, and therefore useful?
-what’s the deal with the mine?At 2:12, when occupied by the horse, it has silver coins lined up underneath it-does this measure the productivity of a mine? Will the mine produce more as time goes on, giving an incentive to consolidate? Can a mine run out? It also says ‘occupied-not producing this turn’-meaning one must hold the mine first? Put it into one’s domain? How does raiding work then, assuming my rather rapid conclusions are true.
At 3:27, compare that to the mine in the mountain pass, south of the first village controlled by the player.-The villages of Onagol, Logano-palindromes? huh?? I am guessing these are for this map…
-4 minutes in, auto/fast combat, doesn’t take into account spellcasting? Huh?
-6:20, recharging mana currents. We had this sort of idea in SM but it seems to have been improved upon here. Thumbs up.
-7:38 defensive stance. Well done Triump. Wisps resistance went to 23 here, which begs the question, what is the max level on each stat, and how do they interact, as apparently regular attacks can’t miss anymore…
-9:20, archers only threatened if the unit next to them is facing them. Interesting.
-10:30, shield effect on the archers.
-11:46-we don’t get to see the end of the combat? Hmm…
-12:00: the spell book looks interesting and varied.
November 8, 2013 at 16:00 #1250027 min let’s play??!! I don’t care even if it’s in chinese because it’s 27 min gameplay!!! 😀
Djurre Van Dijk= Sikbok?
Yes
November 8, 2013 at 16:00 #12501i love her going thru the spell books, and was surprised how much the character creation allow’d for changing looks – wish she’d gone thru it for the other races
i’m obsessed with this game can’t waitNovember 8, 2013 at 16:02 #12502You sir, have made my day! 😀
Also, holy holly wars, it’s the Sorcerer class!
November 8, 2013 at 16:10 #12507I think the player base for turn based games is traditionally very strong here in Germany. Not sure specifically about fantasy TBS.
Looking forward to watching later.November 8, 2013 at 16:14 #12508I did not expect to see wall climbing on infantry units o.o
Now I’m wondering if that’s for all standard infantry, only for infantry without shields or only for draconian infantry.
Loads of other stuff as well. We didn’t get to see the sorcerer’s class units though.
Can’t wait till this game is released.November 8, 2013 at 16:25 #12509For anyone who is reading this and is interested, a good deal of the video is in English, and so is the writing in game, so don’t let a little thing like not knowing German stop you from what is definitely the most in depth video to date 🙂
November 8, 2013 at 16:40 #12514Nice! I couldn’t follow all of it due to it being in German, but I did definitely enjoy the previews of the human and draconian racial units, and the view of the Sorcerer’s spellbook and a closer look at the character creation screen. (Incidentally, that Draconian leader was creepy looking! o_o )
Definitely an awesome video.
EDIT: Also, I want to state again for anyone worried about it – it is worth watching even if you don’t speak German. The players do speak English a little, and the gameplay footage itself is in English.
November 8, 2013 at 17:31 #12527Thanks BBB.
TS are Dutch so Germany’s close by for them as well as being the focus for European gaming events and such.
In any case almost everything looks really great. Love the leader creation, specializations, the many skills/spells, icons, “paper map”, how the priest’s first stun attack is resisted, the second one succeeds and the third one does flanking damage because the unit is stunned.
I didn’t really like wall climbing and projectile resistance on the crusher because it seemed to come out of nowhere with no good rationale for it. I know someone will immediately want to contradict me and will say how lizards are good at climbing smooth surfaces and how it’s the crusher’s scales that protect him from projectiles but that’s not good enough imo. When I look at the crusher he really doesn’t make me think “yep, this one’s a wall climber” (he’s a far cry from the Tigran prowler) and the scales can be reflected in the overall defensive value, no reason why he’d be specifically resistant to ranged attacks (aside from balance).
Is it really necessary for flying units to have both flying and wall climbing? For some reason maybe it’s easier for the devs to not integrate wall traversing code into the flying ability.
Halbardier is misspelled (it’s halberdier).
Sorry for nitpicking, looking forward to the game more than ever now. 🙂

re: The Paper Map.
Yes! The first time I saw it in the Dreadnought video (I know it came after the Theocrat vid, but it’s the one I watched first) I thought “wow, that’s really cool.”re: The Draconian Crusher.
I don’t care so much that the Crusher has wall-climbing. It’s true that its appearance doesn’t really scream “wall-climber” but it also doesn’t seem so non-climber-ish that I would argue they should remove it.Really, what bothers me just a little bit is that they downgraded the Crushers from the badass wall-smashing behemoths to just regular-sized Draconians with big clubs. It’s not a dealbreaker, though. Honestly, it’s fine, just… you know.
November 8, 2013 at 18:17 #1253715:20. nice fireball effects.
15:40. Why did the a.i. come out? If that had been me, I’d have waited for the enemy to come through my gates, so I can gang up on him…Seems a bit odd.
18:48. Install puppet? Curiouser and curiouser. “Grants the town independence, led by a puppet government favourable to your empire. The town gets a makeshift garrison, acting as a buffer towards enemies.” Is this a rogue skill?
18:51- information at a glance:). What the building is, what it does, and what it leads to. Thumbs up.
18:54. I think I am rather going to like the civic guard. Ranged and melee:), and seems fairly cheap as well. It has a cheap upkeep as well.
19:25. Mouse over to get the info about your city. I like this.
19:50 Looks very very good. It appears you have 3 specialisation slots, and lots to choose from. Creation (‘rejuvenate lands, protect and heal your troops, oppose the unnatural’) and Destruction (allows you to ‘disintegrate foes, plunder cities, wreak havoc upon the lands’ all things I like to do in my spare time..) seem to have supplanted the old Life and Death spheres, and, like SM, do not appear to be mutually exclusive.
20:00. You can customise and save characters for multiplayer. My own persistent avatar? Now this is excellent news. One *assumes* one gets a record sheet, tallying wins/losses etc.? Very smart move. Kudos whoever thought this up.
20:15 All the armours look tantalizing. Good art direction here, imho.
20:45. I notice there was ‘Fire Adept’ and then ‘Fire Master’, making me wonder what the advantages of choosing adept are over mastery, as it appears that either one takes one slot. The list on the right didn’t change when the lady went through the different classes…
20:53. Wow, just wow! I also notice that there are 2 more skill slots here.
21:07. ‘Hair style means horn style.’ Wunderbar!
21:25. Vulcano? I think I prefer this spelling over the official, correct “volcano,” seeing as it is a reference to Vulcan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulcan_(mythology)
22:48. Draconian heros start on raptors. I hope it’s not just cosmetic, because this is pretty bad arse/ass.
23:15. Dragons no longer a part of the Draconian race. 🙁
24:00 Draconian hatchlings have an awesome description!
26:35. All infantry units have wall climbing, or just Draconians?
November 8, 2013 at 18:27 #12538Well, i understand the “Drei” after the words “Age of Wonders” but that was just about it…
Any way cool video hope they do some thing like this in english!I think they really need to decide on the font, i dont have any issues with both of them, but i dont like them mixed up like this, i would have preffered they would use only one.
I also noticed that the weapon model in some units like the draconian Crusehr (and some human units) wasent positioned perfectly in their hands, hope it will got fixed.I loved how when you pass by an enemy unit they get a free attack on you for every adjacent hex! makes you carfully plan your movments across the battle field.
And TheSpeaker here is your first Sorcerer class unit: “Apprentice”.
November 8, 2013 at 18:31 #12539Why did the a.i. come out? If that had been me, I’d have waited for the enemy to come through my gates, so I can gang up on him…Seems a bit odd.
And why should the enemy come to your gates when they can kill you at range while you sit inside the town? The priest should’ve stayed on the wall though.
One other thing that irked me were the oversized halberd heads. I know it’s to make the unit more recognizable but at least slightly smaller axe blades would make it look a lot better I think.
November 8, 2013 at 18:48 #12542“Temperate fertile plains” and “Temperate Barrans” 🙂
Looks like the sorcerer can summon his or her own special mount. (saw 4 other summon spells + summoner’s aura)
20:45. I notice there was ‘Fire Adept’ and then ‘Fire Master’, making me wonder what the advantages of choosing adept are over mastery, as it appears that either one takes one slot. The list on the right didn’t change when the lady went through the different classes
Looks like the master specilizations are only available if you’ve already got the adept.
November 8, 2013 at 18:51 #12544@ Jean Luc, surely the walls would have offered me more protection than me lining up outside?
@ Nehz, yeah that makes sense, and is the obvious explanation, but it doesn’t seem that way in the video.
November 8, 2013 at 18:58 #12546@ Jean Luc, surely the walls would have offered me more protection than me lining up outside?
They block some ranged damage but you still die eventually. The AI had only the very damaged priest left while the player had civic guards with crossbow, leader with lightning attack and probably some casting points remaining. It comes down to ranged superiority.
November 8, 2013 at 19:47 #12548Pretty lovely overall, a lot of things to like in this vid.
November 8, 2013 at 20:20 #12551-The High Elf Rogue name was Sundren aka Julia’s Daughter so i think the first part of the presentation was a campaign map.
-Units get xp for damaging an enemy!
-Human Knights yes! 🙂
November 8, 2013 at 21:40 #12563Overall I like what I see in the video. Here is where some improvements seem needed to me:
-Casting Lightning Storm on someone doesn’t cause war? If you aren’t at war with someone but you directly cast a harmful spell on them on the global map then this should cause war. Perhaps should include a pop up warning to remind the player that casting the spell on that target will cause war and ask if they really want to.
-Why do draconian flyers have both flying and wall climbing? Can units with flying fly over walls or not?
-I am not liking the appearance of draconians. They don’t look dragon enough. Was the draconian art from previous games just ignored when creating draconians for AoW3?edit: above image doesn’t seem to work. Here is the link.
November 8, 2013 at 21:41 #12564Great video, really liked most of what I could see. The only thing I already miss are 2d artwork hero portraits :/
Other than that I’m wondering how the magical sphere system works now. Seems like they mixed talents/sphere selection, so will there be leaders without any spells or are the basic spells of each sphere granted as researchable to every player per default? Also does this mean you can actually research a talent like “Fire Adept” to unlock research of spells of the corresponding sphere (or will there be any talent research tree at all)?
As far as “Adept” vs. “Master” goes, I think it’s a little bit like the 6 points you could spend on magic spheres in AOWSM. So if you choose “Adept” you can probably research basic fire spells and you can research advanced fire spells if you additionaly choose “Master” (and there is probably a 3rd talent for ultimate spells).
November 8, 2013 at 21:44 #12568-Casting Lightning Storm on someone doesn’t cause war? If you aren’t at war with someone but you directly cast a harmful spell on them on the global map then this should cause war.
Hey for all they know it’s random atmospheric phenomenon. :p
November 8, 2013 at 21:44 #12569My body is ready!
November 8, 2013 at 21:46 #12571-Why do draconian flyers have both flying and wall climbing? Can units with flying fly over walls or not?
I think that there may be a spell or ability that will allow grounding flyers and prevent them from flying, wall climbing can be usefull in such case.
November 8, 2013 at 22:46 #12583Knights are in!!! 🙂 I’d just want to slightly increase their figure size to make them look more massive. And I’m curious if they could have higher level of charge ability than ordinary t-2 cavalry?

we talked about this a fair amount in an old thread a long time ago, really glad to see the devs push this sort of thing

Seems pretty obvious and Ice man hit it on the head. If all draconians can climb walls then so can fliers. Though perhaps a trait that fits all race specific bonuses would make more sense and leave all the juicy bits to the tool tip. Such as Reptile or w.e
November 8, 2013 at 23:19 #12585The music! So good, love it all but especially during the first city siege. Really stood out. Fantastic! 😀
November 8, 2013 at 23:53 #12587In min 22 he says portraits are completely customizable. Can I use my ugly mug? With shadow magic I added a low quality photo to use as a portrait. Didn’t go so good. Can I use like 3ds max or photoshop to put my ugly mug up there. So they know who came to the table that day.
November 9, 2013 at 11:03 #12611Some sharp analysis. We’re getting closer to beta, but not everything is done of course.
Here’s some misc feedback on comments above:
– Using Hostile overland spells like Lightning storm will be seen as a hostile action. This build had a flag set wrong for this particular spell
– Draconian heroes start on raptors, yets.
– Draconian had to be changed a little to fit with in the customization system, however I think especially the heroes turned out great and are my favorite.
– The game includes a bunch of pre-made head shapes and textures per race. Possibly it can be extended with modding but advanced 3d modelling skills are needed.
– Specializations; yep there are now two picks per sphere. Adept and Mastery, each giving access to a number of spells. -
