BBB, don’t know if this could be considered a major necro since this section of the Forum is practically dead to begin with. 😀

Well, back on topic. No, didn’t played EL, and I don’t know much about it sadly. 🙁

But I do want to also ask (maybe with no avail) if anyone here also played the Gauntlet reboot or DieselStormers. Especially the latter since the game is on Early Access and I got an 66% discount ticket for it on Steam.

A friend of mine has been in the Alpha and so I know it for a very long time and well… it ain’t worth buying^^

It just becomes repetitive super fast and then it’s just boring. (We played it again after release and there were no more bugs, but it still was a major let down.)

The only other game I’m playing nearly as much as AoW right now is Team Fortress 2. With enough practice and the right friends it can be so much fun and incredibly addicting.

Oh and sometimes me and my buddies play the good old “Soldat” (http://soldat.thd.vg/de/), which can suck up hours when playing with a group of friends.

Ah yes, TF2. One of the games with the most hours played in my Steam account, althought I’m not playing with the same frequency as I used to play.

Had fun playing Engineer, Soldier, Pyro and Heavy. Spy is a class that I suck at it, but that’s because a gameplay based on stealth is not my cup of tea.

I also had fun trolling some guys that put some pornographic/brony/furry sprays by spraying Gutsman’s ass over it. 🙂 Still, it seems that sprays of this nature are rare these days compared to the time I was addicted but maybe it’s just me that isn’t playing as much.

Cool! May I ask how many hours you played so far?
And how high would you estimate your skill level? (Also can you Rocket Jump, Detonator Jump, Sentry Jump, Mini Sentry Jump…?)

My most played classes are by far Spy and Soldier, but I am really playing everything. Whatever I feel like and whatever is needed.
I only really hate everything about snipers. They are no fun to play with, no fun to play against and it doesn’t matter if they are on your team or on the other team. they just suck. Mostly they are just free kills for me and if they are on my team it basically means we have less players than the other team. Sure, a really good player can rock as a sniper, but it’s mostly picked by noobs. And a noob playing a sniper will basically just not exist, while a noob playing a Soldier, Demoman, Medic, Engineer, Pyro or Heavy will be a credit to the team.
    Sorry about that little rant^^

    566 Hours.

I would say my skill level is Intermediate. I usually play for fun, and I suck at rocket jumping, even when a friend of mine explained how to do it I can’t get the timing right. But speaking of rocket jumping I managed to dominate lots of Soldiers that did that as Heavy, and funnily enough these guys accused me of using Aimbot. These guys really thought being in the air made them invincible? 😀

What? Accusing you of using an Aimbot when you manage to shoot them with a freaking minigun?!
Damn, some people just can’t lose.^^

By now I am quite decent at rocket jumping, but of course I’d never think I’m invincible in the air. Quite the opposite. You are an easy target when being high in the air.
Rocket jumping is only cool, because you are faster than everyone else, because you can get to places others can’t get to and because shooting down ion your foes is much easier than shooting straight at them.

In defense of one the guys he was a bit far away and the Minigun deals less damage depending of the distance, but even so I use the mouse to aim like everyone else and I was constantly shooting him without any counter-reaction from anyone.

But what takes the cake is that another guy that accused me of Aimbot was doing Rocket Jumper + Mantreads combo. He managed to kill me once because I wasn’t expecting him, but when I was aware he became an easy target.

Yeah, some people just can’t lose.

By the way, did someone else here got access to Dead Island Epidemic?

Funny story here, I already have a access since I’ve gained a key from a friend of mine, however now that I bought Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide on the Halloween sale I got 4 more keys and I don’t know what to do with them.

Anyway, I played a bit of it before picking the original games and to be fair I’m divided. It doesn’t sound and play that bad actually, but the cartoon style in contrast with the original DIs and the fact that it is a MOBA (sort of, there is a mode that’s pure PVE and not PVP or like LoL Co op vs AI) make me put the game aside. But I plan to give it another go and see what I think.

Yeah, I played some Dead Island Epidemic……and got like 20 additional Keys to give away -,-‘

Didn’t catch my interest to be honest.
Kinda similar to Bloodline Champions but given your characters level outside of matches, I more or less ditched the game pretty soon.

To be fair tho, I must have played 15+ “MOBAs” so I’m pretty critical when it comes to this 🙂

On the topic of Dead Island, I’m sincerely hoping they’ll change the level up system of Dead Island/Riptide, so enemies won’t level up with you…..

By the way, did some here played E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy?

I bet you got random crits (which ignore ranged penalties) and so he died super fast and if he didn’t know the game too well he might have interpreted that as cheating.
Anyways, I’d love to play a round with you at some point. If you are interested my steam account is projectweber (from Germany, no picture).

By the way, did some here played E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy?

Yeah, I have played it. Only for one very long evening though.
It was fun for that time, but it wasn’t fun enough to keep me playing. Next time I wanted to play it I thought “well, I’d have more fun just playing TF2″…
I don’t remember too much, but I think there was this one mission where the enemies kept respawning infinitely (it was easy to kill them, but still annoying) and I wasn’t able to figure out what to do to finish it.
2 other things that annoyed me was that enemies could respawn in places I had already cleared and that there where doors you’d need to hack and you could only hack them with your hacking skill being like 32 or above and I hate stuff like that. I don’t want to spend my Exp on useless skills like that…
Anyways, the game was good fun for some time but wasn’t able to get me hooked.

Since we are now speaking of games we’ve played, does anyone here played Shadow Warrior? (The reboot by Flying Wild Hog)

Could say that really enjoyed it, despite the fact that I needed to set everything on minimum to avoid video-lag. I run the entire game from beggining to end using only Katana Skills (and ocasionally Demon Heads and Hearts), the only firearms I used were Uzis and the Rocket launcher against the Bosses. Would definitively pick this game to play again sometime.

The plot is… interesting to be honest. Sure, I still feel that the fight with Zilla could be a bit more epic and the game left some loose ends, but overall I didn’t find the plot bad. Actually I was surprised there’s a plot this time around considering I played the original before picking this one.

A little bump to this thread because it came to my attention that the old strategy game Z (yep, that’s the name) was recently ported to Steam and GOG.

However, I’ve heard that the guys who ported it made a sloopy job on it because it has some issues with AI and controls that the original version didn’t have and also misses some features like multiplayer.

So I want to ask if anyone played at least one of those new versions, because they promised fixes to those issues but I don’t know if the dev team is dedicated (and trustworthy) enough to deliver them. I say that because I own Chaos Engine on Steam and it is a similar case, it has some audio sync issues that they promissed to fix but that was years ago when they said that.

I was waiting for Steam KoF 98 UM version, but I find that version a little buggy, the buttons are not well mapped, and thats a shame.

I hope KoF 2002 UM Steam version improves that.

Also, Im waiting for a new Ridge Racer game, 8 or some version for PSP or Vita, if they decide to make a remake of Type 4, Ill buy a champagne bottle.

    Gee… That sucks.

At least the Steam Chaos Engine is playable despite the problems with audio sync in certain tracks, they even allow you to configure any kind of USB controller to play it. (most games on Steam only allow the XBOX 360 controller)

Been listening to the podcast by Strategic eXpanse #7 – Lennart Sas
around 33:00 they start talking about other games, where they could get ideas (outside of other 4x games) one thats come to mind is the flash game Marvels Avenger Alliance, its a turn base tactical game like the old final fantasy in some ways, has a great system off rock scissors paper. For example some heroes can ‘mangle’ another character stopping them from all healing abilities, another example is a buff blocker, age of wonders have apt of other abilities but it could be a good game to look at to get some ideas. Not a bad game in general but they go way overboard to try and get money out of you.

    Hey there everybody,

I just wanted to let of some steam and advise you not to buy one of the new AAA titles:

Dying Light is boring as shit!

I just bought it 2 days ago (I live in Germany and had to get it from Austria) and I feel incredibly let down.
Luckily I own a high-end PC and can run the game on the highest possible settings without a problem.
And the graphics are nice. Really nice! They are the only thing about the game that is good. (Here the 10/10 the game gets everywhere is justified.)

I have played hundreds of hours of Left 4 Dead and Dead Rising and Mirrors Edge and I loved every single of these games. Dying Light is basically taking all these games, making them not fun and then merging them together.

I guess most of all it copied from Dead Rising: It’s an open world with slow and dumb zombies and you can craft items with which you kill said zombies. But while this was a ton of fun in Dead Rising, it isn’t fun in Dying Light at all. The problem here are the changes they made to their Dead Rising version:
    – It’s super hard to kill a single zombie (takes like 10 hits to the head)
    – every weapon is the same (one handed melee with same range and only maybe a fire or electricity effect [but that’s the most diversity you get])
    – you can only hit a limited amount of times before you are out of stamina and have to wait
    – crafting weapons is a bilion times more complicated than in Dead Rising (in Dead Rising you always need 2 components (which were weapons themselves), in Dying Light you always need around ten otherwise useless components)
    – weapons break. permanently. (to be fair weapons also broke in Dead Rising, but there it wasn’t nearly as much a chore to get them back. You knew which 2 items to get and where to get them and you had your item again. In Dying Light however your weapon breaks and you simply won’t get it again. Why the fuck would I run around for 2 hours searching for a long knife, a short knife, 2 strings, a car battery, a crowbar, 7 Metal Parts, Household Items and a Wooden Plank to get a weapon that is like every other weapon and will break after 20 minutes anyways?!)

Now regarding the “freerunning” part of the game aka their version of Mirrors Edge:
after running for 10 seconds you are out of breath! ’nuff said…
    – also no wall running of any kind

And now let’s look at the things they copied from Left 4 Dead. These are namely the special Zombies (Spitter, Boomer, Hunter, Charger) and the Coop mode.
Well to be honest here is not much to complain about. They simply copied the special zombies and except the Revive Mechanic kicked out the other components from Left4Dead that made team play necessary (healing each other, pulling each other up from ledges, saving each other from stunning attacks like Smoker’s Tongue or Hunter’s Pounce [because those got removed too]). But that’s ok I guess. I haven’t played around much with that yet so can’t fully judge the MP yet.

But here comes my biggest complaint: There is no actual game!

All you do is go from one place to another, pick up something here, bring something there, turn on a switch over there and so on and so forth. That’s the entire game!
Fighting Zombies, you ask? Well yeah, you could do that I guess. There is just absolutely no reason to do so whatsoever. I’m convinced you could basically play the entire game without ever killing a Zombie. Yet I bought the game thinking that Killing Zombies is the core of the game. Slaughtering them by day, running away from them by night. That’s what the trailer looked like. Ignoring them by day, sleeping at night is what the game actually is.
Sometimes I just stop a second from following my brainless task (in this case getting chocolate for a retard) and just start punching at the closest Zombie. But it doesn’t give you the easy satisfaction you’d get in Dead Rising. The zombie just moans a little and turns towards me. 4 more hits to the face and it finally falls over. Oh wait, it’s getting up again. Damn, that’s unsattisfactory. Well, kick it to the ground again and hit it a few more times and it’s finally dead. Sometimes you are lucky and make their heads explode. That’s fun but happens only seldomly. After turning to the next zombie and punching it a few times I notice that my weapon is almost broken again (the weapon can break three times and will then be broken forever) and I lose the last spark of fun that for some reason hadn’t entirely died yet.
So yeah, especially with the breaking weapons, the needlessly tough zombies and with no payoff fighting zombies is just not encouraged in any way. You simply shouldn’t do it.
So at some point after fully realizing this I decided to just run from one orange mission point to the next without doing anything remotely fun in hopes to maybe get to the fun part of the game whcih surely is hidden in there somewhere, maybe?…
This means running (and maybe jumping once or twice) for 10 seconds, stopping and catching my breath again, then doing the same again. This is my gameplay now. Yay :/

Oh also what I didn’t mention is button smashing and locks.
There are times when your character stands still because you are crying and contemplating your life decisions and a zombie actually gets close enough to you to grab you. You now have to hammer “F” until he lets go. Welcome to a console game!
Ok, in this situation it might still be considered ok to use this quick time bullshit, but there are other parts like opening a damn door or something where this is used too!
And then there are the locks.
    Fuck those locks.
Do you remember Oblivion, Skyrim etc and that one gameplay element nobody enjoyed? Yeah, they added that too. There are lots of chests and doors where you have to wiggle a dumb fucking lockpick in a dumb fucking lock and its just tedious and impossible to fail anyways and its just another unnecessary way to puff up the game and just fuck this fuck! There is no good reason whatsoever to include this in a game.

When I first got the game (only 2 days ago!) I was so excited and with the amazing graphics I stayed amazed for quite some time but at some point I noticed that there really just wasn’t anything to come anymore. The graphics are everything. There isn’t any game to play.

Dying Light is just a gigantic Operant conditioning chamber.

If you like being told you are amazing and getting dem sweet level ups for running from point A to point B and searching every shitty cabinet and picking every fucking lock for fucking metal parts and shit then I guess this is for you.
But if you actually want to play a game then keep your hands away from this title!

    ————————————————————————————–

    TL;DR: Dying Light sucks ass!

    TL;DR: Dying Light sucks ass!

    Lol at your rant XP

Well, Dying Light is from the former Devs of Dead Isalnd…which is pretty apparent in DL’s gameplay.

    >Endless hordes of boring Zombies? Check!
    >No reason to kill those rotters? Check!
    >Going from A to B, to C, to A again, then to C and now to B again jsut to return to C? Check!
    >Failing on any expectations trailers and aother PR made us believe to exist? Check!

And in terms of blood/splatter and what not (Which…you won’t really see as getting to goreify a zombie (mobster takes toooooo much time) I don’t understand why the game even got indicated in Germany (Stores/the Publisher are not allowed to advertise the game. It’s illegal to have it in your shelves as a game store etc., but Selling the game is alright….)

And yeah, AAA creates hype and hyoe always results in the game not fullfilling it :/

This is how I feel about what the game industry had become: More graphics, less substance.

Actually, in the past we also had games that tried to grab attention by pretty graphics and music and non-existant gameplay, and then obviously not aging well at all, like Rise of the Robots and The Immortal (it should be called The Mortal considering the many stupid ways you can die in that piece of shit). But nowadays this is becoming more common, and even worse, a staple to the industry.

This is how I feel about what the game industry had become: More graphics, less substance.

Well, I wouldn’t say this about the entire industry, there are just some (maybe most) major developers that don’t give a crap about content anymore.

There are some things that just blatantly display that a game is a cash grab and that the actual quality of the game doesn’t matter:
    – quick time events
    – micro transactions
    – DLCs only unlocking content that has already been implemented before the release
    – lack of editors (in combination with dlcs that only include maps and such stuff)
    – dumbing down a good game so that it’s playable on consoles
    – making the game a like a wonderful picture: It looks wonderful, but you can’t actually do anything with it, especially not “play” it
    – making the game a Skinner-Box, where the only gameplay is pulling the levers to get a flashy yet meaningless reward

But I think to a degree some of these mistakes can be forgiven for some games. I’m mostly thinking about Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls have been dumbed down throughout all their games, but on the other hand Skyrim automatically includes the editors and the option to install user made mods and this alone makes it great. The game includes infinite content without having to pay anything extra for any of it.

… anyways, I could continue ranting about this stuff forever, but I think I’ll go for now ^^

@thariorn: Yeah, I’ll just pick up my Dead Rising 2 copy again and play that until I can’t take it anymore and have to buy the third one. Dead Rising is the shit!

Also I apologize for giving my money to these Dead Island / Dying Light developers, it was a big mistake. Won’t happen again.

Don’t micro-transactions depend on the game as well? Some games (Plants Vs. Zombies 2) are pretty playable [More challenging is better in my books :P, talk about bias!) while farmville clones are very irritating to play :|.

I miss expansion packs over DLC packs.. Devs had to do a lot more with an expansion pack than (Here, have some maps) DLC. Or the horrid nothing but hats DLC.

Yeah, but in some cases it’s basically still the same just with the newer name “DLC” like in the case of AoW3.
The upcaming expansion will also be called DLC, but it’ll be massive and could definitely be classified as an expansion…

Not all is lost yet! 🙂

Some months ago, I played Battleblock Theater with a friend, and I must say “Hell, this game really rocks”.

It´s a simple and brilliant game, you will enjoy it specially, if you play it with a friend.

Since the concept is pure and good, DLC´s are fine, but, all we know, it often goes bad with greedy publishers/devs.

At least, we got lucky with TS and AoW3.

At least, we got lucky with TS and AoW3.

To be fair and less fanboy-ish, indepentendly published Titles like AoW 3 usually are fair and square when it comes to DLC/Expansions (In the Age of digital Distribution, everything you accquire online is DLC….).
2nd/3rd party published titles (E.g. games publsihed by EA) are developed and sold for the purpose of making money not for the purpose of making the game (Or to clarifiy, those games are ORDERED by EA).
This is pretty apparent by how those games usually are as broadly approachable as possible (E.g., no death-/failure-state unless one fails to perfrom a braindead QTE) aswell as as shiny/glamorous/MICHAEL BAY as possible.

AND because those games/company-methods are THAT successful, terms like ‘DLC’ are branded in a certain, often bad way.

Shizz like that is not making things any more accessible to start-up Devs or smaller Studios like Triumph, because they have to handle all that junk big publisher managed to introduce to this industry 🙁

I dont know at all if is correct to clasify AoW3 as indie, but following your reasoning, it could be possible.

Well, if we talk about developement costs, is not rare when you see how actual games invest more in marketing than game developement itself.

Also, we can see Epic case, Epic and TS produced AoW1, after 2000 year, Epic began to grow “fast” with titles like Unreal Tournament or GoW, and actually, Unreal Engine is one of the most popular engines used in videogames. Epic went for money, while TS went for ideals.

Then, AoW3 is a great game, but it hasnt a good marketing strategy, and thats mostly because marketing costs a lot actually.

Is really hard to publish a game actually, if you dont sell your soul, you will be broken.

Anyway, the true innovation is coming from indie games which is sad and great.

Speaking of Indie, any other Terraria peeps out there? I’m waiting on update 1.3, which is coming soonish…1.1 and 1.2 were both so massive it was basically like getting a whole new game for free. I’ll probably get another 200 hours out of it.

Other than that, really looking forward to Medieval Engineers, No Man’s Sky (although I don’t know if I can justify buying a super computer to run it), Hyper Light Drifter, and Children of Morta (although sadly I don’t think I can ever Kickstart a game again after Planetary Annihilation).
