I’ve been thinking about buying Endless Legend and Endless Space Emperor Editions, and could get both right now for ~$90 Canadian as I have just enough credit on Steam… I’d like to hold onto it until the AoWIII “Ultimate Edition” (or whichever package includes Eternal Lords and all dlc’s) appears, and get that instead. Reading the lackluster comments about Endless Legend, I feel like I’m doing the right thing by holding off, at least until those games are steeply discounted.
Here are some other games I’m watching and am kind of excited about:
Predestination
Subnautica
The Forest
Planet ExplorersOf these, Predestination is the only turn-based strategy. Not exactly pretty at this stage in development, though with lots of nice features slowly taking shape.
Fingers
March 30, 2015 at 19:26 #174372I think the next big strategy (esp. fantasy strategy) will be Creative Assembly’s Total War: Warhammer. Some believe it may come out next year, though that sounds fast. I’ve been a Warhammer fan for over 20-years, so I am really looking forward to this one – though virtually every Warhammer game on PC has been mediocre for one reason or the other (ironically, Blizzard originally approached the owners of the Warhammer brand for their fantasy game, got rejected, came up with Warcraft instead – and one wonders what would’ve happened if Blizzard licensed Warhammer).
March 30, 2015 at 19:36 #174376Planet Explorers
They got a free demo on their website if you haven’t played that one yet (Tho with the upcoming 0.90a that demo’s gameplay will be kinda redundant).
But I can recommend PE……given you’re into sandbox-games (Gotta say, the stroy mode is quite excellent too ~
)though virtually every Warhammer game on PC has been mediocre for one reason or the other
Well, Dawn of War I was/is pretty great if you ask me.
Sure, it’s in no way lore-coherent, but a pretty fun experience.Space Marine was kinda okay-ish, but I got the impression the whole story didn’t make any sense, not even taking into account how severe that one bended the lore for its sakee ~

I should’ve been clearer: I meant Warhammer fantasy games; I am not a fan of Warhammer 4k – or any sci-fi franchise/games. But I did enjoy Dawn of War I more than I expected, yes.
March 30, 2015 at 19:49 #174393Ohhh, I was under the impression CA would develop a 40K Total War, my bad then.
Damn, fighting of Humans with my smelly Skaven is going to be fun 😀Well, if it’s going to be a Warhammer Total War….didn’t Mark of Chaos already pretty much do the same thing?
March 30, 2015 at 20:07 #174398Well, if it’s going to be a Warhammer Total War….didn’t Mark of Chaos already pretty much do the same thing?
Mark of Chaos was a decidedly low budget product that has admittedly modest goals though. It had something like 4 playable factions, a fraction of the unit roster in those factions, as well as a linear campaign that capped out at around 20 hours or so. CA has the resources to create the full monty.
Of course, the latest wrinkle is that there are rumors that Games Workshop will dramatically downsize the fantasy brand (pare it down to 4-6 factions, reduce the number of miniatures offered, etc.) with the 9th edition, so the PC game might also be scaled down.
March 30, 2015 at 20:20 #174401Pillars of Eternity is interesting and old fashioned but it has many bugs yet (some of them could break the game).

Which is why I refrained from instabuying it on release.
I guess I will chastify myself till summer, waiting for PoE 😀

We discussed Pillars of Eternity in the RPG game thread I started today, albeit briefly. As for bugs, yes, that’s why I never buy RPG games on release. (Another reason is I want to make use of player-based mods; mods usually enormously improve RPGs.)
April 23, 2015 at 03:34 #186750I’ve played a bit of Endless Legends on this last free weekend, and to be fair, it didn’t catch me.
It’s not a bad game I’ll admit, I think it has some neat ideas that maybe could be used on AoW3. But I found UI confusing at first even with the tutorial explaining things to me, and the way combat is handled didn’t go well for me.
May 6, 2015 at 12:50 #195001@ Kaisoma, there is much of EL that I didn’t like, but in summary:
Seems very frontloaded to me, i.e. glitzy.
For example, you get this sweet intro trailer, which really sets the mood, but that seems to have come at the expense of making a fun game.
I also think they were quite lazy developing the factions.
It’s pretty easy to create differences by removing things and having very few units.
If you did that with the AoW3 Elves, you could make them into 3 factions, e.g.
Elf 1(Wood Elves): Archer, Pikes, Gryphons, get prod bonus from forests
Elf2 (Wandering Elves): Archer, Swordsmen, Cavalry, get gold bonus from sea
Elf 3 (Pale Elves), Archer, Advanced Archer, etc, get happiness bonus from winter. That makes just one race in Aow3. Now throw in a class. I just think that kind of approach to faction design is sub par (ofcourse, much easier to do, and much more obvious to show differences).
Anyway, I reinstalled it, and have time this weekend. I’m on a self imposed break from Aow3 (to knock out some maps) so I will play it, faut de mieux chose a faire.
I’ve been playing Homeworld remastered. It’s well done, but there is some distinct 90’s dna, such as some fairly arbitrary/linear mission paths that wouldn’t hold as much water in a new, modern game, i.e. some missions are puzzles, not fights.
May 15, 2015 at 07:43 #200748You have some valid points BBB, I didn’t say much because, again, I played on a free weekend. But I’ll try to elaborate a bit more.
I found the unit variety too short (especially considering the sub-factions), I think they wanted the units to be “templates” for the custom unit option (at least that’s my impression on it), but even so it’s too short to serve as a justification for this, and not to mention I found it a bit bland at first glance.
Combat is another issue to me because, even thought I think it doesn’t seem to be the focus of EL, I didn’t feel I had much control of it. It’s that kind of thing that’s hard to point why I dislike it to be fair, but maybe you got where I’m getting at.
Hero evolution is one thing that I found interesting. Didn’t got patiente to play a game to get to a higher level to be honest, but liked the idea of using a skill three. AoW3 Hero evolution is functional, but it feel a bit flat to me because, in a sense, I think it gives too much freedom in some areas. Example: When I want to make a Warlord into a one-man/woman army does it feel right to also have access to Blood Brothers? I’m not saying that hybrid builds are wrong, but I don’t feel a combat focused Hero should have access to an “elite” leadership ability.
In summary, Endless Legends didn’t feel bad to me because it has some neat ideas, but it didn’t feel good either because it’s also bland.
I will admit that I’m also not playing AoW3 at the moment, but I want to get back when I buy the expansion.
By the way, I want to ask a more general question: What other genres do you guys like beyond strategy and 4X? I’m close of a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to gaming, but I’m also more inclined to FPS (especially more classic ones like Heretic) and platformers (good old days when I played Sonic 2 in my cousins house, too bad Sonic became a laughing stock due to games like Shadow and Sonic ’06).
P.S.: It’s just me or it’s intentional that the Earth Tower in EL look like a ruined modern-world skyscrapper?

Mainly RPG, CRPG, laid-back RTS aor other story-driven games.
Then there’s HearthStone (Tho that one is ‘pick up HS again, play fo 2 months, drop again for 6+ months), Dota 2, Pinball FX and Planet Explorers(Snadbox game)May 15, 2015 at 10:19 #200790I dabble in rpgs sometimes.
May 16, 2015 at 17:44 #201307Real time and turn based strategy games and RPG’s mostly. Fifa, Crash Team Racing and first person shooters when I have friends over.
May 18, 2015 at 08:45 #201833For me it’s mostly Strategy Games and First Person Shooters.
Of course I play other games too (Magicka! <3) but most of them fit into these categories.
May 18, 2015 at 11:01 #201882Will anyone be playing the Witcher at release?
I won’t.
I have Stardrive 2 to play some more, then Star Ruler 2 and Gal Civ 3 both look tasty, and I need to finish my Eastern Roman Empire game…
May 18, 2015 at 11:33 #201890Will anyone be playing the Witcher at release?
Nah, I’ll perhaps grab it during the Summer Sales of GoG/Steam or maybe even later this year.
If not only to see whether the game holds up to what I exspect (Concerning the recent “Uhh, Downgrade, boycott” stuff which has been going on) or not :SMay 19, 2015 at 03:04 #202167Well I hadn’t planned on playing it, but a member of the AoW community had a spare copy that came with some stuff they were using to upgrade their comp, so I got it at a good price, far less than the the $60 Steam was asking for it.
So far, good fun, and a cool thing is that it runs perfectly on my computer.
I’ll have to get re used to fighting though, using wasd + alt for dodging, + space to roll, right clicks for counter attacks, shift + right click for power attack, and q for signs.
That’s alot of buttons in a small space, but I can bind the keys if I desire, so I might.

As you know I bought it during the bugging Steam. Enjoying it so far but the dodging is getting used to, I agree. I have cranked up the graphics to a very high standard on my trusty laptop, which makes the game look almost perfect.
Highly recommended if you like Skyrim and Dragon Age-esque games. I must say, the quests and sidequests are way less boring than in Dragon Age Inquisition, and have excellent story-lines (and are all voice acted).
Kind regards,
Low
May 30, 2015 at 10:42 #206417Yeah I am enjoying it, but like every rpg out there, there is a fair bit of grindiness.
I play it for 2-3 hrs at a time, max, then have to stop for a bit.
I am enjoying it though, but already I doubt I’m going to finish it.
Also, the sex seems just a bit adolescent, although less so than other games I imagine.
Still, I imagine sex in games will never become as elevated (ha!) as sex in film (I don’t mean porno either).
May 30, 2015 at 11:43 #206431Still, I imagine sex in games will never become as elevated (ha!) as sex in film (I don’t mean porno either).
Which is a sad thing tbh.
Properly done sex-scenes with a motive apart from “Boobies, lol” can go ways to convey certain feelings/relationships/agendas of/between characters. The thing is, many game’S outlets demonize sex-scenes for being ‘porno’ (Which is just ridicolous considering they’re ok with shit like killing-spreeing pedestrians in GTA) thus making Developers feel very unsecure if they want(ed) to include said scenes in their game/story/world.
June 17, 2015 at 20:54 #211720Shenmue and Shenmue2 – one of the best games I played.
38,747 backers
$3,040,778 pledged of $2,000,000 goal
This project will be funded on Fri, Jul 17 2015 9:51 pm EDT.The game will be for PC and PS4. Hopefully Sony will help with financing. The budget of the first game was about 47 million dollars (about 65 million today equivalent).
June 19, 2015 at 02:40 #211957Then there’s HearthStone (Tho that one is ‘pick up HS again, play fo 2 months, drop again for 6+ months)
I started playing Hearthstone recently. I’m enjoying playing as Priest. (a class that I expected the least to enjoy ironically)
By the way, what do you think about the new Tavern Brawl mode? I found it fun, although a bit confusing at first since both players are playing an pre-made and unordinary deck. (it’s Ragnaros vs Nefarion this week)
June 26, 2015 at 07:10 #213324Well, I know that we’ve already mentioned Terraria in this thread but I’ll mention it again because the 1.3 update has an official date now: June 30th.
I’m more hyped now from the official trailer that I saw, because it seems they are not only going to add new stuff like the previous updates but they will also expand the current content.
Speaking of big updates, has anyone here played Gauntlet? You know, the one by Arrowhead Studios?
It’s a good game, although it has some flaws. It re-opened my interest because the devs promised a big update, but they didn’t gave much details yet. Still curious how this is going to turn out, because I think that game had potential to be more than what is it now.
June 26, 2015 at 22:30 #213628I got Grimoire Mana Storm for free, and even though it’s alpha, it seems fun enough.
Then again, I never play any fps, so this is all new to me.
It’s a first person not shooter, but first person wizard thing.
You shoot wizard spells.
June 28, 2015 at 09:46 #213896I decided to see the trailer of this game when you mentioned it, and I don’t know what to say.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s because the game’s on alpha and I didn’t played the game to see how much developed it is gameplay-wise and how different it is from Team Fortress 2 or Counter Strike apart the fantasy theme. But I don’t have bad impression either, it sounds like an interesting idea, but I think I’ll wait and see how it develops.
June 28, 2015 at 12:26 #213919I only tried it because it was free.
My skill level is…bad though.
July 15, 2015 at 16:28 #216876So, is anyone looking forward to MtG:Duels?
http://magic.wizards.com/de/content/magic-duelsI hope it’s not gonna get too cashbrab-ish, but the pre-relese stuff I’ve seen seems nice.
(Even though the release Card-Set is a big jumble of all print-sets)Maybe It’ll put a more noticeable dent into HearthStone’s CCG-Playerbase 😛
But, tbf, the Tavern BRawls in HearthStone are way too much fun for what they actually are 😀July 22, 2015 at 12:16 #218224Tavern brawls are always closed when I take a look to see what all the fuss is about. I’m also interested in the duels thing. Hope they make playthrough a bit smoother than the stand alones they made previously (rather than being all shiny). Shandeler was nice and quick, only had you wait on the phases that you marked.
It would be nice to see a card game that’s a bit more complex than hearthstone yet more friendly to computer use than MTG. Most computer card games I see are way too simple or hamfisted.
