It is said that pikes have few differences while other tier 1 have big graphic differences for melee (goblins with cleavers, dwarves with axes, elves with swords, orcs with greaswords, humans with longswords, draconians with maces) and even mechanical difference for ranged (dwarves shoot only one time, goblins and draconians have multiple source of damage).
Now how much different are those pikes? They have just racial bonus? Chargers don’t charge for example? Orc pikes seems to become obsolete soon (orc cavalry has polearm too) but are they able to beat a goblin marauder with their +1 melee and their +5 hitpoints (that is +10 compared with a goblin)?

There is some variation between pike units – the name of Chargers isn’t a lie, for instance (making chargers good anti-pike units themselves – they negate First Strike through having it themselves, while having an offensive bonus). However, it is fair to say that there is less variation – although, to be fair, apart from the divide between shield infantry and overpower infantry, the distinction between infantry racial units can also be small.
