My frostlings hate tropical terrain, so I thought terraforming the land to Fertile Plains, a terrain type that they liked, would at least mitigate the situation. No dice! Not a single chance in their happiness.

I’ve twice tried to answer this with the forums dying each time – so my answers keep getting shorter.

Hated climate gives the penalty only.
Disliked climate gives the penalty + any terrain bonus.

Change the climate or use other mechanics to ignore the penalty – there are several ways of doing this (specializations, particular class abilities, hearts)

I’ll rephrase what Wallthing said a little to possibly make it clearer.

If a clime is hated that negates any possible bonus from overlays.
If a clime is not hated (but for example disliked) overlay bonuses do apply, and can mitigate disliked climes.
