Tomorrow is the Q&A sessions where the peeps in the audience get to ask the question. If I were there I’d ask the following:

How important will lore and story be for you in this game? Will those and the single player campaign receive the same attention as they did in the AOW fantasy games? Even more perhaps? Say “yes, more!” please :p

I think I saw that question in the twitch chat…

You can create random maps with the level editor and then chamge it as scenario.

Content designer is pushing real hard to allow a crosssection between RMG and scenarios. So like the same as the campaign, that youd be able to fix some sectors and have the rest rmg generated. This is not confirmed to be possible, but the devs ive told to really want to.

Campaigns like the provided one are the same – not confirmed to be possible, but a number of devs are pushing for it.

That probably would be a significant boon for mapmakers, actually. Put down the bits that are actually important, and let the procedural generation handle the rest. If they can pull it off, it could be useful for it to be possible to create ‘fixed’ maps using the system – let a mapmaker put in a few fixed sectors, then run the RMG script in the map editor to fill in the rest, then they can have the opportunity to make any tweaks they want to make to the RMG-created elements and finalise the map.

Btw, I saw someone ask in twitch chat about how to get that desktop wallpaper once you sign up on the website, my guess is that it isn’t working properly yet. I have a feeling though it will be a version of this baby I found on the godsawful paradox forums:

    Edit:

I think I saw that question in the twitch chat…

Lol, that was iHunterKiller copy-pasting me and then I asked it myself again later on :p

@rhaeg: Did you notice the 6 logos painted onto the walls in that art piece? I bet that’s the 6 races/factions logos. Or perhaps 6 houses? ^^

    Interesting stuff.

Where can I watch the interview? Twitch tells me this is the link to it, but it goes to some Cities Skylines stuff, and even though CS is a great game it’s not what I want to watch…

@leyrann The interview was very short, I’d just read over iHunterKiller’s notes at http://aow.triumph.net/forums/topic/aow-planetfall-collected-knowledge/#post-272319 and watch the Q&A session tomorrow at noon CET on paradox twitch.

Damn, how come you notice these things, and where do you find all these cool screenshots in that other thread? I checked the URLs and they should be from the paradox site, but when I go there I won’t find any of them :p

Dammit!! :'( Thats sweet you guys, congrats.

Just beg and Triumph might should send you one, if only for all the cool AOW3 tutorial vids you made all those years ago 😉

    Could anyone ask about this:

Hit chances comes into play with ranged weapons.

AoW3 has such brilliant and simple combat mechanics. Do devs really plan to return to randomized hell from AoW2 combats? If so, it will be very disappointing…

    and this:

Diplomacy revamped and includes elements of other PDX games, like causus belli

    *facepalm*
Paradoxian global strategies have weirdest and illogical diplomatic systems I have ever seen.

Casus belli isn’t a bad thing necessarily. Whether it’s needed or not also depends on the setting. Sure, orcs and elves declaring war on each other whenever they see fit could work, but if the political relations are somewhat more subtile, casus belli would make a lot of sense.

Also, while I’m not a big fan of everything Paradox does, I don’t think anyone will claim that the AOW diplomacy system has any depth at all and taking over one or two things from some of the Paradox games wouldn’t hurt.

Edit: love how this thread has turned into a semi live chat, lol.

It was mentioned in passing at the start – I am not sure how opposed I am to the miss rate. On one hand, miss rate is a core mechanic in xcom which is a much beloved super strategy game of recent times. On the other hand, I did not enjoy that aspect of the game… missing simply led me to rage. We will have to see ! I hope it simply effects damage. We will see though.

In regards to the diplomacy. In this case, totally grab ideas from PDX, just don’t take everything.

Look at stellaris. A PDX game that doesn’t do 50% of what other PDX games do because it wouldn’t fit into the game. I don’t think TS will take ideas that won’t work in their game either 😉

Personally, I hate XCOM exactly for this part of gameplay. You can’t plan tactics, coz random shit. AoW3 has a bit of combat random too, but it isn’t annoying.

I am one of those few persons who never played XCOM, but how much randomness does AOW really have? There is pure luck and then there is “luck” heavily influenced by (unit) stats.

In combats? Not very much, except combats with halflings.

You can overcome ‘luck’ of your opponent using skills in AoW3 combats. In AoW2 combats if your opponent is ‘lucky’, you can’t do anything.

Ranged units are overpowered. If you give a lot of units stuff like Shield and Projectile Resistance, that’s one way to deal with it, but my feeling is that hit chance for RANGED units (only) MAY solve that problem quite elegantly, exactly BECAUSE you cannot count on your ranged troops killing everything in sight. In the end it will decrease their effective range.
It also should make it more difficult to gain XP via ranged attacks, especially for Heroes.
I would just wait how it turns out, before starting to cry.

Xcom is a fantastic game. Not my cup of tea but using some of the game mechanics in Xcom and other squad based games in a multiplayer team game is much more interesting. The luck mechanic has to be toned down in AoW3. Too much relying on that one successful roll. So in my opinion the major battlefield spells in Planetfall that they would ,instead of battlefield enchantments will be advanced technology, rely less on luck and more on timing.

Less luck and more timing. I cant see developers not incorporating timing to replace some luck mechanic. So in a technology research tree you would make the best of technology you find and research. The luck would be in the choices and what you uncover from the sites.

Maaan, i just read the small print: As more people sign up, new rewards will be unlocked! All content will be delivered to everyone who have signed up on game launch, regardless of when you joined!

Sooo this means we don’t get those 2 songs until next year! Q.Q
Im a sad panda right now lol

For real? I can’t imagine that, they wouldn’t let us wait til release for a desktop wallpaper, right? I understand I wont be wearing a hero costume myself tomorrow, but darn I want those songs!

I’ll give Triumph the benefit of the doubt and just call it “Paradox practises”.

I find it really interesting how paradox is often viewed in such a negative light here, while they’re basically hailed as the best company there is on the civilization forums… A matter of perspective, I suppose.

Im with you on that one Leyrann ^^ I love the way PDX handle their business :>

I think most of the negativity against Paradox here is aimed at their dlc model. Speaking for myself, I’m someone who does not play a lot of games but I play the ones I own a lot. I used to love Hearts of Iron II & III and Europa Universalis II & III but then they got a bit crazy with their DLCs and I ignored them for a few years. Now I’ve been playing Stellaris and I really love that game. What they’ve been doing with dlc there is pretty much the max of where I’m willing to go for a game. On the other hand they are doing a nice job of releasing frequent meaningful free updates alongside the paid ones.

All in all I’d say that people are sceptical about the Paradox DLC policy, but not negative in general. Also, the criticism posted on these forums tend to be accompanied by arguments… and now let’s visit the Paradox AOW-planetfall forums or topic or whatever (https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/we-are-proud-to-announce-age-of-wonders-planetfall.1098898/) earlier today. The third message:

Nobody cares. Where is the PDX announcement?

Mind you, this was posted on a forum about the game. “Nobody cares”. That is true negativity as far as I’m concerned, and you will not find it here, no matter if the topic is Triumph or (other) Paradox games.

Not entirely unrelated: I hope Planetfall will get its own forums separate from the Paradox site. These forums are incredibly polite and positive always… the Paradox ones are your standard troll infested crap, IMO.

Looks great! Very excited for it.

Are you peeps still having discussions over here? Didn’t you hear?

MICHIEL VAN DEN BOS IS GOING TO BE DOING THE SOUNDTRACK!(!!)

You can just wait contentedly until launch now, there’s no real need to learn anything else, right?

It’s almost everything I need to know.

Unless I missed it, there’s only one more question to be answered. Is Raymond Binger coming back to write for Planetfall?

On the subject of the pdx forums.

I’ve been hanging out here, on Steam and on the PDX forum. So far all of them have been pretty good. As for the ‘nobody cares’ comment, I think people should speak their mind. We’ve kept both this forum and the steam forum – of all places – a pretty nice place to hang out and discuss. So doing so on the PDX forum with the help of community members should be easy : D>

And, there are some distinct advantages to the PDX forum. Still getting the hang of it myself, but it has some nice features. Also, those features will actually keep working – think edit post – since we don’t have to grab devs away from working on the game to fix them. There’s a whole infrastructure and team behind the PDX forums. Which also means no – or a lot less – spam.
