Does this patch require you to re-start the game from scratch to be put into effect? Shrines still do 100-plus damage after I patched.

Edit: Okay, it looks like Shrines that were produced before the patch went into effect maintain their Devout status. Newly produced Shrines do not.

So I still lose the scenario and must re-start.

Is this (and any future) patch going to be compatible with saves from previous version?

Fantastic Work on the quick patch and taking in a good amount of community feedback, i’m extremely happy with my decision to buy this game

Yes, I’m afraid that the changes to the Shrines will not affect Shrines that were in saved games, those will still have the devout property. Sorry, but it’s a limitation of the engine that it’s very hard to patch a unit that’s contained in a game in progress.

Could someone clarify what was done to the AI? Squire doesn’t cheat, but the rest do? Isn’t that how it was earlier?

The new AI is like this:

Squire – Does not cheat, has been made a bit more stupid. Will not cast global spells in 60% of turns. Can only perform one task at once. Will not build cities as fast.
Knight – Does not cheat. Will not cast global spells in 40% of turns.
Lord – Gains a 33% cheating bonus to Gold and Production. Will not cast global spells in 20% of turns. +5 flat bonus.
King – Gains a 66% cheating bonus to Gold and Production. Gains a 25% cheating bonus to Mana and Knowledge. +10 flat bonus
Emperor – Gains a 100% cheating bonus to Gold and Production. Gains a 50% cheating bonus to Mana and Knowledge. + 20 flat bonus

The “% chance of don’t cast global spells” is to simulate players more, since most players won’t cast global spells every turn. It should also reduce the AI spell spam on lower difficulty levels.

Note that previous posts I made were inaccurate about how the AI cheats. The AI still gets a flat bonus to Gold, Mana, and Knowledge, but that’s applied at the global level. I thought (wrongly) that it got that bonus once per city.

Kind of disappointing that the patch doesn’t do more to balance T4 units in relation to lower tier units, and the spamming of said units, but oh well. I’m on GoG, so I’ll be looking forward to getting the patch next week!

Good to know. It should be on a tooltip when choosing difficulty level.

Small steps are better than giant leaps that may break the game instead of improving it.

Thank you for the new patch that’s soon to come.

I don’t mean to be the guy that ruins all the fun and excitement but .. what about multiplayer issues? A lot of people are unable to connect at all with the current system. Are you working on fixing it, changing servers to the steam servers or how are you going about that? Would love some information on the subject since I’d love to be able to play with my friends.

Looking forwards to see the T4 being reached slower. Will be a lot better for the game.

I believe we’re working on a system to help people connect in games using VPNs and Himachi, so that people can connect up with each other more easily. I’m afraid that I don’t know the ETA on this and other multiplayer issues though, and since I’m not at work I won’t be able to check for you until Monday.

I agree with those saying it probably makes more sense to have Shrines only get their damage buffed from living Devout units if Shrine stacks in particular are what your trying to fix. As having them damage each other with their attacks would be odd.

Also was does “flat bonus” mean in regards to AI cheating?

    Changes sound good.

Looking forward to playing the game again now that my real life interlude is over.

Harder level AIs get like +10 or +20 to all global income. I’m not sure of the exact numbers, but I think the Emperor AI gets +20 (or 40?) gold, mana and knowledge income. This is on top of the +100% gold income and +50% mana/knowledge income. Its meant to give the AI a boost in the early game when the low number of cities the AI has means it can easily cripple itself by losing a fight in the wrong way or something.

Sorry, we don’t support saving during battles :( It was never planned, so there’s literally no support in code for it.

Sadly I wasn’t planning on using saves during battles to reload bad turns. My PC, which can run Skyrim with full HD DLC’s and mods, for some reason overheats with this game. It runs fine, no frame rate loss, but it runs with fans blowing full and then just overheats and reboots the PC. This made playing a long battle impossible and I had to just resort to doing auto-battles only. I have since turned down or off everything except textures, but it’s still a problem, even on the world map, but at least there I can save.

That’s really weird LeBurns. I’m afraid I don’t know what the game could be doing to cause that 🙁 If your PC is overheating so much it’s restarting, you may want to have a professional look at it though, the overheating might cause permanent damage in there, so you could end up burning out the motherboard or something.

Can I suggest that we add in some city spam penalties and more in depth diplomacy? As IGN pointed out the tactical combat is awesome, what really hurts this game is the strategy-wise depth, hope you guys can do it in the next few patches or in DLCs.

I have to agree that I do feel annoyed about the fact that this is only available to Steam users. I wasn’t sure which one I would buy until right up until the last minute – most of my games are on Steam, but I like GOG’s stance on DRM and customer service – and knowing this probably would have meant I went with Steam instead.

When people were asking about the difference between the versions, Triumph must have knowm that they were going to do this for patches and yet obviously chose not to reveal it at the time – a lie of omission if you like.

It may be only a beta patch and it may just be a week til the real one is released, but it leaves a bad taste I’m afraid. I feel like a second class customer and a bit of a sucker, buying the deluxe version as I did mainly out of good will toward Triumph for making this long awaited sequel.

Donkey, he did state that GoG’s system makes it extreamly difficult to do auto-updates like this.

    Note for GoG Users

We are sorry for any GoG users wanting to participate in this test, but the DRM free installer means there is no branching / reverting / auto updating system available for us to deliver this beta patch to you. You’ll get the polished, official patch next week!

It’s not the fact that it’s not available on GOG – I appreciate why they have chosen not to do it (though I’m sure they could still release it and make clear that the real patch would require a fresh re-install). It’s the fact that they must have known this would happen and yet when people were asking what differences there would be between the Steam and GOG versions in various threads here and elsewhere, they chose not to tell people.

Installed beta patch, still seeing the issue found in this thread
    http://ageofwonders.com/forums/topic/cpu-and-likely-gpu-overheating/

    At
    1440×900
    VSync On
    Textures High
    Shadows Off
    SSAO Low
    Soft Particles On
    Reflections On
    Bloom On
    Anti Aliasing Off

5 minutes into mission 1 of the elven court campaign, GPU fan is at max, CPU temp is 85 degrees celcius

(This is not the integrated graphics issue, not a laptop and my GPU is definitely being utilized)

Its also very possible they DIDN’t know it would happen (Yes it is, I don’t want to hear that its not..)

Any help as to why when i click >properties>betas>i only get two options: opt out of all betas, and option 2, Preview branch for press.

How do i get the 1.08 preview? any help is much appreciated 🙂

I got the distinct impression from the Steam/GoG thread that this was known AND mentioned.

In any case, this is a beta patch, a test if you will, which I think is great.

On my old PC your beta patch added +7 fps (was 20, now 26-28 – +33%) on global map with ultra settings. Good work, guys!

Try restarting steam, that usually solve such problems.

Really sad to see there is no longer an AI level that plays best with no cheats ( a normal mode) 🙁

Would love a no cheat setting with AI casting freely

Why not? If I understand the AI correctly, they play the same code on all difficulties (except squire now), while the main difference in higher difficulties is how much do they cheat? so its easier for them to research, produce units and cast spells in higher difficulties!

So actually right now the knight difficulty will be the best the AI can play without cheating.
