I would argue against art style all day long, though the music is all the same to me – as long as it fits I don’t really mind one way or another.

I do think AoW has better role play strategy and that EL went for more of the straight up strategy. But that certainly was fun too =]

You make some valid points buddy. But I do believe that if u are making a new realm that is part of a connected universe, you need to explain what happened. These connections are a super fun way to handle that, with Subtle nods to the inspiration, yet still wholly different.

I see the comparisons you are making, but honestly, everything has already been done before somewhere, you just need to look ^^

To be honest, I’m totally happy with the races. They are unique enough where it doesn’t feel like a clone of AoW fantasy, yet some of the general themes are carried across so I’m not “ahh what is this, it’s so new and experimental, I don’t like it!”.

in reply to: AoW: Planetfall – Collected Knowledge #273074

yes, any race with any tech. But also some racial modules with other races. Like the vanguard with the amazon. Info is all on page 1 =]

Honestly I don’t want it to be the same timeline at all. I mean, super magic v super technology is cool and all, but it’s just not my jam ^^

I prefer it to be far in the future, or another realm where technology works and magic doesn’t.

Yea i went back and rewatched and saw the same thing which has me wondering now.

Can anyone on the floor get confirmation if the Quartzites are a dwelling species or a monster den independent creature?

I just decided, unless its actually secret stuff in the lore then I prefer the terms “lost” or “ancient” over “secret” technology.

in reply to: AoW: Planetfall – Collected Knowledge #272572

    Halfling party robots confirmed? ^^

in reply to: AOW:PF Lore speculation #272571

    Because power begets power 😉

in reply to: AoW: Planetfall – Collected Knowledge #272522

    Secret technology == aow3 classes.

Darn, i liked the separation of the two. Oh well its still awesome.

For example, some races modules can be applied to a number of other races, while others might be race exclusive.

Yea, it makes sense for the Vanguards weapons to be usable by almost anyone, but Kierco organic mods could likely only be used by them.

Thanks for getting the answers Gloweye!

in reply to: AOW:PF Lore speculation #272520

I agree Drax and share your theory.

    • Either the Shadow Demons units we have seen so far, are actually from the Kierco race.
    • Or the Kierco are Shadow Demons that have been cleansed of the darkness.

I would personally enjoy the first theory a little more, however, they indeed mentioned hive mind twice during the Q&A; once related to Secret Technology and again related to the Kierco.

Perhaps now that the Kierco are free to leave their home world, they wish to return to the hive mind – aka the All Devourer.

in reply to: AoW: Planetfall – Collected Knowledge #272516

Penguins *may* be in the game.

    Not 100% confirmed

I have literally zero doubt they will make it into the game 😛

    Story and thematic updates:

    • The story begins rather grim and dark as you emerge from your homeworld to find the Star Union empire you once knew, loooong gone. The game soon evolves into a more mythological sci-fi setting when events unfold and the campaigns will give you the option to create a new Age of Wonders, or plunge the galaxy back into darkness.
    • Consider the setting a blend of Alpha Centauri & Fallout on a vastly increased scale, featuring multiple worlds all secreting away old technology among various other mysteries of the Star Union.
    • We now know that a massive space storm prevented hyperspace travel, shutting down the Star Union.
    • The Vanguard peoples:
      • have been confirmed as a playable faction in one of the campaigns.
      • Their faction leader is called Jack Gelder, his city is called Fort Gelder.
      • As a race, the Vanguard are an old expeditionary task force that had been in cryo-stasis for a very long time and recently awoken.
      • They are very likely the most true representation of the Star Union left in the game, which is backed up by the teaser trailer and its iconography of the Vanguard matching the Star Unions.
    • The Star Union themselves might not be as cute and fluffy as they seem.
      • A faction within the Star Union, called the Terrata, both enslaved and forcefully augmented sentient races through painful genetic modification.
    • The insectoid race are called the Kierco and were once enslaved by the Star Union.
      • While they are indeed rational, their enslavement has given them an innate hatred for humans.

    New gameplay information:

    • Each race features 12 units. 2 of which are water based units, 1 light, 1 heavy.
    • Its unknown how many class units you can produce. Though it is possible that class units are simply called Secret tech. Unknown at this point.
    • Secret technologies can unlock up to 4 extra units.
      • Secret tech appears to be something you can uncover from high tier treasure sites, like a Wizards Tower in AoW, etc. Secret technology can give you the ability to convert your faction into a Hive Mind. Details TBC.
    • Planetary natives are confirmed and are likely types of monster spawners: Killer insects are confirmed and Dire Penguins are almost confirmed.
    • The second confirmed dwelling species: Quartzinites are creatures made of stone.
    • The Kierco equivalent of the Vanguard Marine is called a Frenzied. Not a lot of mechanical info was given, other than they have really sharp claws.
    • The Kierco equivalent of the Vanguard Tank is called a Ravenous. Mechanically similar to the bone collector of AoW3. They can eat units whole and then lay eggs to spawn new units of their own.
    • Sectors can contain “Landmarks” such as the Elysium Park which is a Vegas style ruin that lets you recruit special Android units from the entertainment industry.
    • The Terrata are a story element that left behind many guarded black sites where they experimented on people. These have become treasure sites within the game and could contain Secret Technology.
    • Campaign leaders are visually customisable.
    • The campaign will feature various planets with each level containing one planet per map.
    • When starting a game, you land on a planet and only have intel on the sectors closest to you. Be wary though, as you are not the only people to have recently landed on these planets.
    • Map layers are hard to thematically explain as a helicopter shouldn’t really be going underground.
      • Meh, do it anyway imo. It’s a really fun system and a staple of the franchise. Doesn’t matter if it’s silly. I mean.. Its ALL silly anyway, so it a moot point 😛 Besides, it can be implemented in so many other ways that is still both fun and make sense.
    • There is no deployment phase in combat, however tactical maps are now considerably larger. Due to this, city battles have been redesigned. Details are TBC.
    • The world map is still square, but it now loops around on the west-east axis.
    • Super weapons have been announced and are so powerful that they could have destroyed the entire Star union.
    • The new colony management system lets you tweak your colonists between various jobs within your sector empire to increase the income of the resource you need most. Is this a pops system? NEED MORE INFO! 😀

    Misc info:

    • Finally using 64 bit engine. Meaning a heck ton more content can be added to the game before performance issues occur. This will greatly help out the modding community.
    • Multiplayer modes of AoW return with up to 12 players in a game. The devs are unsure if they can support cross platform multiplayer at this time.

    Screenshots:
The units in this screenshot are both class based “technology”.
On the left: The Promethean units, designed to destroy any enemy of the Star Union. On the right, Xenoplague units.

Will there be an option to manually deploy the troops or at least to pick some kind of formation or something like that?

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION!

Siege battles: Different way to handle city presentation or same “cheat” as in AoW3?

I highly assume its the same type. But who knows, they did say battlefields are larger :>

in reply to: AoW: Planetfall – Collected Knowledge #272447

    Great question Dwarfurious!

Campaign will likely be from the Vanguard based on the trailer. But what will the side play campaign be?

I would love it to be one of the more alien races. That would be really fun 🙂

Oh damn, your right, im only 1 hour away from their timezome, doh!
I shouldn’t be looking at these things at 7am lol.

in reply to: AOW:PF Lore speculation #272439

I was thinking overnight that it could be interesting to collate which races are aliens and which are not.

Awesome idea and there are three possibilities to consider:

    • The race was brought to Athla alongside Iniochs elves.
    • The race was “created” by one of the wizards of Evermore.
    • The race was a native of Athla and either in hiding, fighting back against the Shadow Demons or one of their thralls freed by the Highmen.

I would like to believe that, as a general summary, those allied to the elves in AoW1 either arrived to Athla with, or were created by, Inioch himself.

The rest of the races all seem to serve a very specific purpose of some kind, even Goblins seem to be perfect at doing the tasks that noone else wants to do. So those new races created by Nimmue, Yaka, Mab or any other wizard are all then natives to Athla.

Its also worth noting that perhaps the wizards didn’t “create” the races and instead they simply stole them away from another realm or planet.

However, its also worth noting that the Shadow Demons would have had lesser interests in Athla if there wasn’t any magic and magic users there and what happened to those people is totally unknown. Perhaps they were captured by them or perhaps they were destroyed by the Highmen when they reclaimed the world.

I want to doubt the most likely race to survive a Shadow Demon occupation would be the dwarves. I don’t like it simply because they would have had some form of knowledge or even ancient stories about the SDs then the game prob would have played out a little different. Thinking Game of Thrones and ancient stories of white walkers.

But i think they are the most likely to secret themselves away in ancient holds and survive long enough for the Highmen to push back against the darkness.

At the same time, that could be their purpose for the Highmen. Creating strongholds should the SDs ever come back.

    General Information;
Ray Bingham Returns to helm the lore.

QUESTION: Has the lore and specifically the campaigns story been fully written and fleshed out already, before the game becames feature complete? As that was a problem with previous AoW games, where Ray then had to backtrack and modify things that became a little twisted on itself as features got cut out.

    QUESTION 1:
What Age of Wonder franchise features have been scrapped for AoW:PF
    AND on the same subject,
What Age of Wonder franchise features are currently on the table but may yet get cut from the game.

I’m worried about loosing map layers, shadow gates, spheres of magic, that sort of thing. Tbh I’m Mostly worried about map layers, that is a staple AoW franchise feature.

    QUESTION 2:
Is AoW:PF a side project to try new things before rolling them into AoW fantasy? Or is this something You want to carry on with releasing expansions like you did with AoW3 until around 2022 and postpone another AoW fantasy game until 2026 or so.

    QUESTION 3:
    – What logic has been applied to explain away why the spaceships in orbit don’t simply wipe out planets, sectors or cities?

    General gameplay questions:
    – Any new mechanics brought to the game, never before seen in a AOW game?
    – Resources, how does that work.
    – Now that you have resources, do you have espionage and sabotage mechanics too?
    – Diplomacy, how has it been expanded and improved?
    – Same question for happiness.
    – Any changes to ocean tile gameplay now the game is using futuristic technology?
    – How many modules are in the game, sounds like there are loads, which could slow down research dramatically. So, any changes to research systems?
    – Tactical map stealth systems? Can you use spells/tech/abilities to place invisible mines on the map?
    – AoW has a lot of great lore friendly races. Will we see the missing races arrive in similar expansions we saw for AoW3?
    – Pineapple on pizza, yes or no?
    – any plans for a collectors edition, and if so, what goodies does it come with. Hopefully no pineapple on pizza!
    – what is your fav. Change to the game from AoW3 and what feature do you most want to add to the game from a previous AoW game?
    – how do settlements and bases differ from each other and are pioneers + forts, watchtowers and etc still a thing?
    – how do you place a new settlement – can it go into any sector?
    – with a name like planetFALL, I wonder how you start on a new map, do you drop into any sector you like?
    – are there any type of adjacency effect mechanics applied to sectors with multiple settlements?
    – how do you take over a sector from neutrals and does it differ from enemy players – do we destroy and rebuild, capture or perhaps either?
    – what type of play styles do you reckon sectors cater to, aggression or defence? Can people turtle up with multiple settlements in close proximity or do you have to snake out?

in reply to: AoW: Planetfall – Collected Knowledge #272394

    Nice, thanks bob. Some Qs;

    – how do settlements and bases differ and are pioneers + forts, watchtowers and etc still a thing?
    – how do you place a new settlement – can it go into any sector?
    – are there any type of adjacency effect mechanics applied to sectors with multiple settlements?
    – how do you take over a sector from neutrals and does it differ from enemy players – do we destroy and rebuild, capture or perhaps either?
    – what type of play styles do you reckon sectors cater to, aggression or defence? Can people turtle up with multiple settlements in close proximity or do you have to snake out?

Edit: nice update about the screenshot, I see what you mean now! Awesome.
Now I’m curious about those water sectors, you mentioned resources… that has me even more curious!!1! So excited lol
