Good discussion, though could be better without all the vitriol! Lots of ideas for me to try out, since I am still getting the hang of Necromancer.
Another question to throw out there in terms of balance…I think necromancer is severely hampered by a settler start relative to other classes because of all the time spent in buildings that are for city growth. The larger the city start, the better balance looks for necromancer. Agree?
August 29, 2015 at 06:06 in reply to: I wrote a guide on Necromancers for anyone that's interested. #225287I find stalkers very difficult to deal with as a necro…what do you all do against those?
Cylons?
August 29, 2015 at 02:19 in reply to: No blight bolt, banefire, spirit ray in Item Forge, bug? #225267Ah, I didnt know that. Very useful yes.
Arnout,
Thanks for responding. I reloaded the save and now everyone is a Arch-lich. So I don’t know. I don’t think it was my imagination because it was the lack of healing the prompted me to look at the unit and see not only no archlich tag, but it didnt even look all scruffy! I wll keep an eye on the units and see if it happens again.
Thanks!
Well, I just see the same set of games open, with only the hosts and no one joining.
I am thinking possibly lots of people would join, except they can’t, because no free slots are available. But the hosts may very well think no one is out there, game is dead.
Bump!
Right now there are about 8-10 PBEM games I could join…and I would happily join ALL of them. I cant even join one!
5 games is nothing. Back when I did a lot of chess that had the equivalent of PBEM, I would carry 30-35 games continuously. This fits perfect with my schedule, I can sit down and play for about 10-15 minutes…then get up and do something else (otherwise, online AoW requires me to sit at the comp for like 6 hours straight…very hard to arrange).
I am happy for modding. But given a choice between modding and lifting this 5 game barrier…
I want to remind the community preemptively that it’ll be better for EVERYONE not to tie your mods to Steam Workshop. Release them at least one other place than there, so everyone can enjoy them. A significant portion of the active AoW3 community does not use (the awful thing that is) Steam.
Yeah, though you have to admit Steam is certainly a lot better than GoG, since those Steam users got their patches weeks in advance, have an easy virtual chatroom/friend system, in addition to the easy and fast common way everyone has to share mod files
Wait..what was bad about Steam again…I forget.
I like it. But prefer it be something that needs a conversion spell, piggybacking off the current corrupt spell.
the good news is that triumph probably hasn’t decided to sit around and do nothing for months, so whether what they’ve been working on ultimately ends up being aow3 related or not, they are producing something that is likely of high quality given their work on aow3 and eventually you will be able to purchase it. which is good news to me, i’m all for another aow3 dlc or another, totally new game by triumph.
Me too! I (and the friends I conned into buying AoW) would all like either another DLC or would give anything new by Truimph another shot based on liking this product. I just hope whatever they release is more smart strategy gaming and not anything dumbed down!
Windows 10 and AoW work for me also, the only oddity I noticed was when I went to host a game it said something to the effect of “Could not host, please reconfigure your network settings “…but my friends were able to join the game anyway so I just ignored it.

I know, I’m harsh. The monotonous, rabid, religious Steam hate with nothing to back it up just gets to me.
July 29, 2015 at 00:35 in reply to: End of SuMMeR PBEM Tournament ( 24 player maximum ) – BEER League #219539I am decidedly anti-steam, and am running the GoG version. I just signed up to that battlefield thing though. Don’t know if it has a forum or what.
Always have to make a bunch of special exceptions for all the GoG players. They have no way to communicate, they are running the same version of AoW that my grandfather played on, etc etc.
I am going to have to bow out, with apologies to SeeR and my group. I am going to be on the road most of August and I don’t want to have to be switiching back and forth between versions with the spotty hotel internet connections I will be having just to satisfy people who bought the game off an inferior service.
July 26, 2015 at 22:08 in reply to: End of SuMMeR PBEM Tournament ( 24 player maximum ) – BEER League #219108I tried opening a game on the battlefield website, but I cant see my game listed anywhere. What is the function of the open game there? I just signed up for the website but I never used it before so I dont really know what it is supposed to do. I do not yet have an actual game open through AoW because I dont know how to communicate passowrds, etc.
Yeah…managing 200 cities would be a chore, and managing 1 would be a bore.
The first question is going to throw up some weirs results.
I play mostly single player due to time and people restrictions.
However, preferable future focus for me would be multiplayer features such as an inbuilt lobby, matchmaking, recording, drop in/out connectivity, option to set the game up in time chunks (eg the game auto saves and ends after 30 turns) manual combat in pbem, a ghost mode for live mp battles (so I can overview my cities and Armies, set up movement etc, but obviously not execute them).
Seconded, though I actually play a lot of coop due to RL friends who have the game, so we can save and reload at a later date (sometimes 2-3 times a week). But I would prefer a lot more 1v1 and manual battle PBEM options.
In general I like all those rules. The only one I have technical questions about is #3.
I think your implicit assumption is both sides have 4 stacks, and that they are full stacks.
If one side only has 3 stacks, should 4v3 be allowed?
What if the stacks arent full. If I have 12 units spread across 3 stacks, Do you have to leave a 4th stack out of the fight? I may well have legitimate reasons for not combining them into 2 stacks, for example spreading out my leader bonuses. This would however seem unfair to the player who brought 4 full stacks and now has to attack with only 3 simply because of how I have split mine.
July 19, 2015 at 00:13 in reply to: End of SuMMeR PBEM Tournament ( 24 player maximum ) – BEER League #217544Count me in!
I heard the Tsarina of Tokyo loves the game too.
July 9, 2015 at 19:21 in reply to: Some cosmic events are infuriating early game and need to go. #215904I like them too, and since you can turn them off I fail to see why they should be an issue.
I would view this as a way to keep it balanced, since unlike the other alignments you start off the game as neutral.
When I choose good or evil there have been times I have had to delay certain benefits because I dont have the alignment yet. With neutral you start out with it, but perhaps have to worry a bit more about losing it later…
Have you tried single player to see if its the same? Also, are you using classic turns or simultaneous?
I personally never notice something like this no matter if its singleplayer or multiplayer. The AI is waiting on me probably 90% of the time.
Also, his portrait is of Cersei from the Game of Thrones television series.
Pre walk of shame Cersei or post?
My best city is the city I just took from my opponent.
When my scout came across some lost Souls I simply kept them running around the battlefield, using Sprint until the dumb battle Timer said the battle was over. Free win.
Do people really not know this loophole?
Just imagine how long the battle would last without this “dumb” timer! You might not have even posted…you would still be playing that battle!
When you divide price/hour I have spent on this game, AoW3 is the cheapest entertainment I have right now, by far.
According to steam I have played 1034 hours. I am not sure how much I spent on the game, but lets call it $50.
This works out to about 4 cents/hour. And I am not done, I expect to be playing this game with my friends for a long time, possibly years. I played Shadow magic for years, and this is a much better game.
The Avengers movie cost me 12 bucks for 2 hours, 6$ an hour, and was really sub par. While I liked the first one alot, I would have preferred to be playing AoW instead of watching the second one, which was a bit of a bore.
Thanks. I had several underground cities but no surface ones, so I also noticed it wont spread on the surface until you acquire a surface city.
Does blight spread over water? My first surface city was on a very small island, which is now blighted, but the game is on pause while my 3 friends coordinate to renew it…
(at my suggestion we all 3 decided to play goblin against 5 AI and blight the world…blighting was my job! Fail!)
The game is basically perfect mechanically right now. I love the current state.
I agree, no complaints or real demands, except for more of everything!
Rise of Nations had a conquer the world campaign that was very cool, kind of free form so lots of replayability. Newly conquered lands would give you extra resources you could apply to later battles.
