Open Beta for Update V1.5 Kicks Off! (Windows/Mac/Linux)

Before the Age of Wonders 3: Eternal Lords Expansion is released on April 14th, we’ve decided to celebrate and start the open beta for the complementary v1.5 Update on Steam.  Additionally we’ve launched Steam betas for Mac and Linux versions which will also accompany the Eternal Lords release.  We’d love to hear your feedback – with your help we can make the game even better!

OpenBeta

Note some of the complementary features of V1.5 latch into bigger systems of Eternal Lords, but on its own the v1.5 Update still constitutes a large list. Here are the key features:

Vassals:  As your relations with Independents improve through better race relations and completing quests, you can convince independent towns to serve you as Vassals. Though they retain independence, Vassals have many benefits: they provide you with trade income, grow in population and maintain their own defenders.  If they like you enough, Vassals will occasionally give you units for free, and you can demand tribute in the form of resources or units in cases of emergency.

Race Happiness:   Relations are now tracked per race, making decisions about who you make war with much more important.  Declaring war on an Elven city might give you a quick conquest, but don’t expect your Elven citizens to be happy about it afterwards. Something to take into account, as you can now expand your realm without warfare. In Eternal Lords, Race happiness will be further expanded with the Race Governance system and new victory condition.

Added diversity for Core Races:  The Dwarves have doubled down on their defensive character, as well as the defensive strike ability that allows them to attack and guard in the same turn. Dwarven support units, such as Shamans and Apprentices, are now all armored. The keen senses of the High Elves, on the other hand, allows them to respond to attacks that would catch other races off-guard, all their support units now have the Total Awareness ability, meaning they cannot be flanked by attacks from behind. The Draconians have a host of new tricks, with the Charger being able to fly in tactical combat and the Raptor doing melee fire damage. These changes should make your choice of race more important than ever!

Diplomacy AI Improvements.  The AI now uses personalities, with them adopting diplomatic, neutral or aggressive playstyles with accompanying alignment and specialization choices.  The AI has learned more actions and feels less like a black box. For example there’s a set of new messages giving reasons for declined proposals. Settling near an AI’s domain, trespassing its domain or demanding a tribute are sure ways to provoke a response. Computer opponents now request alliances to take out a very powerful player and also learned new negotiating tricks like counter offering, demands and gifting.

Random Map Generator Overhaul: Features include overall more geography variation, carefully crafted starting areas that fit your race, better structure distribution with higher level pickups now having defenders.  For sessions with fixed Teams, maps now have more balanced starting positions.   Of course the RMG has been prepared for the many structures Eternal Lords will bring to the table on release.

New Hero Join Interface: you can now turn down heroes you don’t like, and when available, a new hero of another class and race will spawn in the next turn.

Selling Hero Items: Strapped for some quick cash? It is now possible to sell excess items from the hero inventory in return for gold and mana.

Improved Overview Maps: New Map Glyphs and Labels for cities make the Overview map a lot more readable.

PBEM BETA Last but not least; the new “asynchronous” Multiplayer Mode. In PBEM games, a player takes their turn in their own time and then uploads it to Triumph’s servers. Once it is uploaded, an email is sent to the next player in the game, who may then take their turn. This allows players to play when they like, without needing to set aside a large amount of time with other people to play a game.  We expect the PBEM service to stay free, but this is pending bandwidth usage.

Now for the action

Mac

This is the first open beta for Mac. Please help us find any compatibility issues by posting in the dedicated Mac section of the Open Beta Forum

Linux

This is the first open beta for Linux. Please help us find any compatibility issues by posting in the dedicated Linux section of the Open Beta Forum

There is currently an issue with launching the game on 64-bit Ubuntu when clicking ‘Play’ in the Steam Client. The game won’t boot.
Workaround:
1. Find the AoW3 steam install directory (Steam Library > AoW3 > Properties > Local Files > Browse Local Files)
2. Type: cd <AoW3InstallDirectory> (Replace by the directory found at step 1)
3. Type: ./AoW3Launcher.run ./AoW3Launcher.sh

Have fun, and don’t forget to let us know what you think on our bug reporting forums!

Note for GoG users – sorry, but organizing an Open Beta with frequent updates without auto patching and without branch-selection is not currently not a possibility for us.

is it just me or does this beta patch make the game lagy?

It does seem to be less optimized than the old version. Though considering it is a beta version, that does not come as too much of a surprise. I am sure they will go through an optimisation iteration once every bug got squished.

    I am so happy. I love the feel of the maps now in RMG, feel more alive and realistic. Are those trees Autumn themed? Wow an entire hex covered in brambles…{No damage?}

But yet I am sad. :'( Where is the Race governance and the Frostlings? :'(

All in all I like the feel of it so far. Sad that I can’t get sage anymore with the lvling the magic. They are marked down to tier 5 for lvl 6 and 7. No more AI going crazy with building settlers. Turn 25 on medium map with 3 players before I met one, turn 37 for the second.

The Vassals are way to many quests, I had two at once I had to finish. Also takes a long time before they join join you. Love the free units though. 🙂

Hmm, you can see the new spells and skills and abilities, but not the new units themselves.

love the changes to the engineer, they should have had machine repair by default.

Undead will have tons of usefull skills. I was hoping for the Lich specs – turning your heroes and leader to undead. And phylacter essentially removes leader death penaltieis.

There is also a Werebear skill, so some unit can turn into an animal like the Mystic.

The new Warlord unit, the scout, is female, a welcome addition

I’m betting its the Frostling Shaman as if it wasn’t Frostlings it would show up in the beta and its unlikely to be Tigrans as Cat People turning into bears (likely Polar Bears as they’ve already done the animation for them) would be weird.

Frostling Scouts will be able to enjoy the protection of Royal Guards which is funny, because Scouts sound really low level.

Yes, they are tier 2 now… not sure why. The dreadnaught did not have any good melee units otherwise.

Yes Scouts are very weak, they are really only good for scouting. The dwarf version has 35 HP only!

Well too much new cool stuff to look at in one game!

I noticed 2 minor issues: On the create leader screen the description for destruction master is…weird. It seems like the variable name is printed in place of the variable value.

Also, you cannot scroll the Rules section in the MP waiting area.

But so many fun little details! What is the deal with the tombstones on some dead units (but not all of them)?

It looks like some new terrain, or atleast new artwork. New heroes! And the vassal cities are a very interesting addition.

I just got out of a MP and 2 of us thought we were accumulating far more resources than before. I had something like 1000 gold and several hundred mana, I couldnt spend it fast enough. I had one vassal city, maybe the extra income without an extra means to spend the income is what caused this? Has anyone else noticed more wealth accumulation?

No time to post, playing. Been going great so far. So much to love in the new changes and balances.

Tombstones signify corpses, it’s important they be more easily recognizable because if the Necromancer class. Machines and certain other units don’t leave corpses iirc.

I’m a little confused, my AI opponent’s Human Militia has Throw Net, but my own Human Militia does not. Is that intended? Didn’t see it mentioned in the Patch Notes…

I like that the unit got ‘something’ but I just don’t quite understand (There’s mention of Human Patron Military in the unit display) which seems to imply the AI already benefits from Race Governance perhaps??? While I cannot access it yet obviously… (expansion)

Did Golems get nerfed hard? :(

Yea, I’m not sure if I’m suppose to be happy or not. One hand they’re not as strong as they use to be, but on the other hand, they’re a lot more cheaper(same price as musketeers!) and still retain 14 def(!) decent damage and hp. But that does also mean more repair skill is needed, which I doubt low maintenance can handle (3hp regen?). Then again, repair machine builders are there, so I’ll just have to see.

When you report this, note down that it could be expansion features leaking over into the Beta.

AFAIK, it should stack, so 2 engineers heal for 6 HP. Haven’t tested it personally though.

One problem I may be seeing is that your vassals can tribute you so many armies that they can send you into debt! Maybe an option to decline the army tribute? But the AI would need this too if it cannot afford the upkeep!

Oh, hah! The AI is getting racial governance rewards, isn’t it?

You can always disband the new troops if you don’t want them 😉

Nets on Civic Guards is due to Racial Governance, yes.

And if you’re curious about Golems see here: http://ageofwonders.com/forums/topic/update-v1-5-patch-notes/#post-165753

Did Golems get nerfed hard? 🙁

Let’s put it this way, they will literally melt against lightning damage, -3 res and still 40% weakness. Idk why they didn’t get the normal dread machine light weakness of 20%.

IMO, their stats and medal upgrades are decent otherwise for a T2 except the damage of 13 that is far away from he old number 18. They are significantly nerfed against dedicated melee unit like Warbreed, WarlordLs in general. Dread Melee option will now be Knights, Firstborn, shocktroopers etc in the late game.

PS. Oh and never ever never again move them in the direction of a Manticore rider(ELF) lol, inflict stun wtfh 😀

I’ll try this Open Beta this afternoon!

Question: will the game automatically update to 1.5 on April 14? Or do you need to buy the DLC to get the extra content?

    #166049

On the other hand Golem has 14 def which is more than any other racial t3 (Knight has 13), it’s reinforced (+4 def vs. ranged), it has wall crushing and demolisher (+4 dmg vs. walls and machines), it’s freakin’ tireless and immune to spirit and blight (machine).

It gets guard breaker at veteran (attacks disable guard mode) and defender (20% bonus def/res when in guard mode) at elite.

Definitely exceeds racial t2s while being t2 itself and it has more than enough to compete with racial t3s as well, especially considering the lower cost and upkeep. Shock damage is its only real weakness.

Yep, looks like the AI sneaked out and bought the DLC, it’s using race governance upgrades! Should be fixed in the next update we release.

Yep, instant crashing as soon as I click play game at launcher. Dunno if you are usin Mac or not but I am and at first it worked, and I quit out and was about to switch to debug mode but the launcher immediately crashed and has continued crashin since. Posted on steam forums in the mac beta section but doesn’t seem like anyone else has had problems like this on Mac. Basically playing the waiting game for now x.x

Did you forget the part that machiens do not heal, they are pretty tough but still reliable on other units(Now also engineer)for their healing while other melee units do heal by their own nature, that is still a massive advantange, especially once fast healing comes into play. That new cosmic event(Mist was it?) seem specifically made to screw with Dreadnoughts. Arch druids can still deteriorate them etc now with 13 damage it’s pretty much nullified.

TL;DR Nvm this rant i’m still upset High Elfs(Out of all races, sigh!) got inflict stun manticores !

Now everyone and their friends will play High Elf warlords, Longbow horses, the best T2 cavalry(Wl and their cavalry synergies)… Did i mention thoroughbred gryphons? Great now also inflict stun manticores =(

People experiencing crashes or non-boots, can you please post here?

    http://ageofwonders.com/forums/forum/open-beta-1-5-2/

with your system specs or crash logs as outlined here:

    Would be of massive help!!

I didn’t forget but engineers and repair machine on your leader are readily available and engineers are even better now and it’s never too early to start leveling them up. I don’t remember if this was already in before the beta or not but Engineers are armored and get the +1 def from Solid Engineering or whatever it’s called + they have their grenade now. Repairing’s not as fast but it does the job and it compensated for by the Golem’s tankiness and abilities imo.

Any unit can be countered but that doesn’t invalidate it, it just means you have to consider the circumstances and prepare accordingly.
