    Hi there!

Devildog from http://www.explorminate.com! We’re an up and coming 4X fansite that covers all things 4X games. We have a podcast that’s coming up on its 7th episode and we were lucky enough to have Lennart Sas, co-founder of Triumph Studios, agree to be on the show for an interview!

We wanted to reach out to you guys and ask what questions YOU want answered. He already promised us some unannounced details on their upcoming DLC/expansion, but if there’s anything else you guys want to know about design decisions, future plans, etc. then let us know here!

If you haven’t already, join us on Steam (eXplorminate or e4X) as we try to champion your favorite strategy genre and we’re always giving away free stuff. Age of Wonders 3 just might be next in our “giveaway” list 😉 Who knows?…

    Thanks guys!

You’re the moderator on the Stardrive forum, right?

I guess it might be nice to know if Triumph’s been in touch with Notch and what his thoughts on the game are and if there’s maybe even further cooperation planned. And of course if there’s anything that can be shared regarding post AoW3 plans.

Modding. When is it expected to be added, and what sort of capabilities will we have. Change existing content? Add new content (including graphics)? New terrain? New layers? New battle mechanics? How much freedom will we have.

    Hi!
Ask him whether they are going to include new races (frostlings, tigrans) in the upcoming DLC.
    Thank you!

Yes, but don’t mistake me for one of the “heavy handed” ones. I haven’t banned a single soul on that forum. Cross my heart.

I’ll add that one. I’m interested in hearing if they know what Notch thinks. I’ll be willing to bet that they won’t continue working with him considering his…retirement.

Hmmm, could you ask him, whether they exspected such good reactions to a new AoW game and how it sold (Or just something in this general field).

Oh and, what gave them the sorta spark to continue the AoW franchise?
There’s a considerable timegap between the (self)funded Age of Wonders III and the publisherfunded Overlord II,so…~

Btw., will you do this Interview in Dutch or in English?
(I’m not familiar with your site :3)

    Good questions!

A quick trip to our site would reveal that we’re English-speaking 😉

Will we get a different mode to start the game with?
Personally, id like a mixture of “empire building” and “adventure mode”

basically you start off as a nobody with several city state factions, but bigger than just little towns scattered around, doing quests for them untill you can finally take controll of one of em.

Also: now that there have been several threads asking for a Character Customization mini DLC: any word on that?

And lastly: So they talked about Racial diversity already, but maybe he can spill some more beans how the other races they have not talked about yet will be dealt with.

    Thanks anyway

    Well, I have some questions:

1 – What are your future plans for the Aligment system? Are you planning some simple tweaks or an rework?

2 – Who is your favorite character in the AoW lore and why?

I can think of two questions off the top of my head:

1-What would it take to keep the DLC coming? (i.e. can we just give Triumph money to keep AoW III development going or do they need even further support such as more people buying the base game?)

2- Should you be able to receive as much money as you could ever hope for, when would the developers consider the game done? (saturated all the races, class, spells, features (modding), and anything else that can be thought of)

Don’t really think asking about money should be part of the interview. We were already told that AOW3 was good enough for triumph in another thread.

    Some questions:
1- Are classes going to match or at least get a few additional units\spells. The necromancer has a lot of units -and it was said that is just a scratch of things to come!

2-Same alignment system and if its going to get changed\altered.

3-Is the RMG getting more options. These never hurt to play around with.

4-Are we getting the ability to save a map setting as a “preset” we can later use to quickly make another map similar to one we enjoyed playing. (That is, save preset would be an option we can use midgame)

    5-Any tactical combat changes.

Well that was too many suggestions 😛

Just tell him Thankyou for providing a GOG version of the game. It`s more appreciated than many realise. I enjoy my games far more not attached to some draconian DRM.

    1. What were the things, apart from the races, that absolutely needed to stay in? Which units, spells, abilities?
    2. Which things were absolutely discarded for this release? Like: which features from previous releases did you consider bad/redundant in hindsight?

Ask if Archons will be coming back, cuz I want to play them.

Hey, don’t insult Reskar and his kinsmen by comparing them to DRM practices like that!

Going back to the OP: What’s YOUR favourite class?

    #135464

And what is your favorite unit (there is only one right answer).

It sure as heck had better not be the Golden Dragon.:P

Halfling Adventurer? We know Lennart has a soft spot for the little folk…

The problem with knowing the right answer is that it throws you when you get a different answer that isn’t wrong. 😛

    Fair enough.

Is there any chance of truly world altering terriforming spells to make there way into the game? (Holy wood, flood, level mountain)

What is your favorite difference between AoW III and the previous games?

hah! Appearances are often good guides to things, especially when really shiny.

The problem with knowing the right answer is that it throws you when you get a different answer that isn’t wrong.

Quite a dragon worthy statement. It at the very least merits the extension of a “not to be eaten” sticker if there are some disagreements.

I suppose I’d like to know what “fan favorite” feature was most surprising.

Will there be aditional class units for other classes than necro, like for example Warlord?

Will there be additional units for other dwellings(Fey and Archons come to mind…)?

Are other races getting their own “Butcher” equivalents(not all pikeman of course, what fits the race)

Unfortunately not without some major (re)work, the Ai cannot handle that sort of stuff (pathfinding issues).

But i second this question tbh – has any work started or are there any plans on expanding the AI so that we can have these hex altering spells.

But more importantly i support the question regarding modding support. Time frames and a rough feature list (even if it is just a wish list of features) would do me plenty 🙂

I would also like to know if we can get our mits on any unpublished works. Such as rough concept art, unfinished or cast away stories, that sorta thing.

I think something that could be quite interesting is how the original vision of AoW3 compares to the release and also the current version of the game, and his opinions on future progression of not only the AoW IP but also Triumph Studios.

Kind of a meta question, but uh…whats his thoughts on any changes in the games industry in the last 10-15 years?

Was he hesitant to go back to an old school TBS/4x before starting development on age of wonders 3? And does he feel overall pleased with the way the gaming community has reacted to it? Going forward, does triumph want to continue with the more retro style strategy game play that they’ve recently come back to, or move back towards a more “mainstream” focus like they did with Overlord?

Truth be told, before the AOW3 announcement I thought I’d never see a game as good as Shadow Magic ever made again. I wonder if this is signs of a larger trend, or an isolated case of Notch-induced awesome.

    I second this!

Also: Can I look forward to be playing Age of Wonders 4 when I have retired? 😀

Similar to Garresh, I’d like top know about the thought process/creative reasoning/ brainstorming and then creation that goes into making a game.

    Next questions would be:

What games do you play in your spare time, assuming you do infact play games!?

When playing those games, do you ever see anything and think “Hey we could use that, that’s really well done,” and also, the contrary “man what were these guys thinking, I’d never do that!” ? Which games btw?

Have there ever been any times when you’ve had an idea, and it didn’t come to fruition, and then someone else had a similar idea and made it work, with regards to games.

Who do you consider your biggest TBS competitor, and why (excluding Civ)?

My question to Lennart would be:

Are there additional DWELLINGS planned (since that could be away to slip in “lost” races/units like Dark Elves, Tigrans, Syrons and so so).
And in order to not leaving a loophole:
Is there anything planned with Dwellings in addition to what we already have?

    #135840

    I have a couple questions:

    1. Is there any chance we could get pre-combat enchantments back for units? I really miss the ability to add capabilities to my units with magic.

    2. It would be nice if we could have a couple more units per stack (bigger stacks). Is there any chance this could happen?

These are great questions, guys. Thanks for responding. I’m going to look through them all and come up with the top 5 and see if I can get them all in the interview. We’re interviewing him on Wednesday and I expect to have the podcast up on Thursday for everyone.

I’ll post the top five that I come up with here in just a bit.

Anyway you guys have a consensus on the most important five are for you?
