Positive first impressions by PC Games

Our German fans will be happy to know that Age of Wonders III is featured in this months PC Games Magazine. On page 50 and 51 you’ll read everything about the live demo they attended and it seems these first impressions were very positive…

“Schon das Zuschauen machte Lust, Nächte mit dem Spiel zu verbringen! Eindruck: Sehr Gut” (Just watching the game gets you in the mood to have sleepless nights playing this game.)

I guess I might just be the good soul you are looking for. If I get my hands on this magazine, I will surely translate it for you 🙂

No need to translate every word, just the main points/new stuff. Should be a short list.

    Hi,

This is my first post, though I’ve been quietly lurking around this forum for about six weeks. I’m new to the AoE series, but I’m looking forward to AoE3. I especially like the empire-building and hero/RPG aspects of the game and hope that the developer can pull it off well.

Anyhow, I just got my copy of PC Gamer (US edition, July 2013, p. 22) in the mail today, and there’s a page-long preview of AoE3. It’s based on a short bit of playtime by one of the editors, and there’s really not anything new. Here are the highlights:

-“The key new feature is that we’ve made each faction’s leader central.” During the playthrough, they created a high-elf theocrat “with creation and earth magic specializations.”
-One of the Elvish cities is run by “a peaceful monk, and his city’s income comes from any tiles with trees on them.”
-Faction leader’s traits (racial and class) affect the entire empire, so that a Theocrat’s domain looks different from a Warlord’s or Rogue’s.
-The skill book menu is in-depth, but there are lots of tooltips for clarity.
-Although turn-based, “Fights move at a fast clip…. Before you make an attack, you can see the probable damage outcome.”
-The developer hinted at possible changes “to the campaign map: forests that can grow or burn down, and spells that shift the flow of rivers, grow mountains, and start ice ages.”

There are three pictures that accompany the article: one with the dragon from the trailer, one of an overview of a well-developed city, and another with a group of giants attacking a caravan.

Okay, that’s about it. Maybe the German PC Gamer has some additional info.

Yeah, I heard a lot of the preview is just a write up of the GDC demo but it seems there’s a few bits and pieces there. I wonder if that monk is a kind of theocrat leader (with earth magic?). Thanks v8.

Pssst… over here… for future reference it is AoW not AoE.
    AoW = Age of Wonders
AoE = Age of Empires or perhaps Area of Effect?
Thanks for the info. I think I’ll go drink a V8.

The new bits seem to be a monk the runs one of the cities and gains income from one of the cities. So are heroes able to be appointed as governors of individual cities or something

The other is that the leader’s racial traits effect his empire, not just his class traits. Interesting.

Ok, I have the magazine in front of me now and I am willing to share all the new information I can find 🙂
I have to say though that this article is again just about the GDC trailer, so there isn’t very much new info. But I will still write down all the things that I think havn’t been mentioned before.
    So, here we go:
    – In the story it’s High Elves VS Humans
    – You can play the campaign as either side (-> 2 campaigns)
    – You can beat the campaign in various ways (diplomacy / world war)
    – the Humans are said to use magic as an energy source for their machines
    – Dwarfs get an income bonus from mountain-hexes in their domain
    – Goblins have a smaller decrease in population when using ‘Hurry’
    – For the Theocrat all Temples give an extra income
    – The Special Unit for the Theocrat is an Ark of the Covenant, which casts mighty spells and is stronger the more devout units are taking part in the fight
    – there are 6 Races, 6 Classes and 6 Specializations (!)
    – That means 216 combinations…
    – There are also tons of cosmetical optionsfpr your leader
    – chance is still in the game, but has a smaller role than in the other games
    – A mentioned item: The eye of a Beholder, which enables the carrier to turn enemies to stone

That’s about it. Everything else is just stuff we already know.

    Cheers

Some interesting info here. Now im really curious how many special units a class have, because this Ark wasnt on the Theocrat special units artwork. The magic fueled machines also interesting. Only goblins lose populatinon when use hurry? Strange, in AoW 2 every race lost it. If temples give extra income for Theocrat im curious which buildings give bonuses to the other class.

    Thnx for the info!

no,most likely all races will lose population when using hurry, but the goblins lose less ,thats their racial advantage.

Probably Barricks, Warhall for Warlord, somekind of magic building for sorceror, workshop for Dreadnaught, tavern or thieves guild for Rogues and I have no idea for Druids.
