Random Map Survey

Hi everyone,

Random Map SetupToday’s survey topic is all about how you play the game. AoW3 is a game with a lot of modes and options, allowing you to customize the way you play. We want to know how you like to play AoW3, so we know where to put the focus when working on new titles. Given that random maps are by far the most popular, all questions below concern games on random maps.

[wpsqt name=”Random Maps Survey” type=”survey”]

In AoW3 many people experience a sweet spot for how many armies and cities they have. If you are just clicking end-turn there’s too few. If you are just mashing ‘m’ and most cities are on Produce Merchandize, there’s too many.
Note that with armies I mean stacks of units that are active on the map, so that excludes units left to defend cities or scouts set to guard out on the map. For cities I mean cities that you yourself control, so that excludes vassals.

Hmm, weird survey. Esp. The part about armies.

I am really looking forward to seeing a later tally on the first question. While I expect single player to outweigh multi-player it will be nice to see the co-op vs. versus multi-player ratio.

Just wanted to chime in with: Some of the survey final statistics may be misleading. For example: “Do you mostly play single player, co-op or versus multi?”: Single player for me though I’d rather be playing vs or ffa multiplayer. Alot could be done with the multi interface, would be good improvement to see the game settings before joining a game lobby. A global chat room would be nice for organizing games and just general chat/community.

I was reading the last tournament forum post and in regards to the issue with latency, simultaneous turns and who gets to move 1st: Current workaround was to wait 10 seconds or 15 before anyone moves. Could a system be incorporated where a random order is generated at the beginning of every turn and use a turn based rotation in 5 second increments. Then switch to simultaneous. So example 5 man FFA everyone gets 5 seconds to move turn based, then after 5*5sec. (25 seconds) it switches to simultaneous turns. Or, at the beginning of every turn a diceroll (or some other game factor perhaps?) determines who has exclusivity to move for the 1st 10 seconds of a turn. Then open season after the 10 seconds. Or perhaps the person in last place army strength wise gets to move 1st every time.

Off on a brainstorming tangent there at the end and feel free to carve that up :). Really appreciate your dedication and democratic development process. All good stuff. The improvements since release are impressive.

Hmm, weird survey. Esp. The part about armies.

Those do not have little to do with random maps directly, but random maps do allow games to be set up where the amount of city micro and unit movement becomes an issue. E.g. if I have 50 cities and 40 armies, each individual choice becomes less interesting and therefore less fun.

Some of the survey final statistics may be misleading.

No worries. I’ve done more than dabble in statistics, so we are fully aware of how information from the survey can be misleading.

uh, did the survey questions change after I voted?

I remember selecting ranges like 1-5 or 1-80 for various questions which are not at all the results being displayed.

    #218754

The first question is going to throw up some weirs results.

I play mostly single player due to time and people restrictions.

However, preferable future focus for me would be multiplayer features such as an inbuilt lobby, matchmaking, recording, drop in/out connectivity, option to set the game up in time chunks (eg the game auto saves and ends after 30 turns) manual combat in pbem, a ghost mode for live mp battles (so I can overview my cities and Armies, set up movement etc, but obviously not execute them).

    #218759

Yeah, with regards to #1 people should probably answer in terms of their favorite rather than most played.

    #218765

I think I also misunderstood the 1-5 choices, I thought they were generally asking between 1-5, not asking for a specific number…

Yeah, the questions should probably be favourite. That’s what I answered it as, anyway.

Seconded, though I actually play a lot of coop due to RL friends who have the game, so we can save and reload at a later date (sometimes 2-3 times a week). But I would prefer a lot more 1v1 and manual battle PBEM options.

Some of these multiple choice questions could really use a ‘not applicable’ option.

Never really considered sweet spots by “number of cities”. In my games I usually try to space out cities so they don’t constrain each other at their max size, while also trying to cover all the resource spots. So the sweet spot in that regard mostly depends on map size and layout.

Armies is whatever the empire can support in terms of income and they are split by in number and size according to objectives I am currently trying to conquer – so there aren’t any ‘sweetspots’.

Same for Turn Length – it’s not like at a particular turn number I start to enjoy the game less – that factor really depends on when I start to feel like the current map is basically ‘won’ and there are no interesting/challenging looking spots or opponents left to conquer – turn count has no relevance.

Edit: survey doesn’t seem to have counted my answers, as Turn,City,Army counts are at zero for the max options I picked.

I think it’s asking how many cities you like to maintain/micromanage from the perspective of it being fun.

Yeah…managing 200 cities would be a chore, and managing 1 would be a bore.

    #218795

The city question in particular is weird, I play mostly medium and large times (95% of the time) but on medium maps I can have a number and on large maps I can have another number of cities, usually I don’t like having more than 7 cities on the first 110~130 turns, after that I’m fine with 8+ cities, but I do deslike when I have like 15+ cities to manage, the game become a bit boring by that point.

Armies on the other hand I don’t mind to manage a lot of them, if you do not count Defense armies (garrison) I usually have 6 parties (I play with 5 to 7 heroes limit, so one hero on each party plus one or two heroes on defense), if you count Garrison than the number of parties can easily go to 15+ armies.

Also, I’m happy to see that Empire Build is the second most voted choice, it is my preferred game style so I hope to see more into that area! 😀

If you play hotseat against yourself, does it count as single player or multi-player?

Eh? Is there something wrong with poll results? Some options I have submited is numbered as “0”, even tough with me it should be at least “1”, shouldnt?

Btw. the question about number of armies I play is really, really weird. It depends on stage of game, number of players and most of all, size and type of map. There is no “preference” for number of armies – player uses the number of armies that he needs. More reasonable question would be if player likes to cluster armies together (for example moving 3 stack in adjancent hex) or expand small regiments through out the map, or if he preferes zergling strategy or having strong units or maybe do he uses all his funds on army or does he always spare some % of income etc.

I play single player more than anything, but I love playing Adventure mode with my friends.

Euh, it’s like the options change every time I look at them. Wasn’t armies 1-5, 5-10 before? If the anwsers changed but the votes havn’t been reset, have the votes for 1-5 become 1 and the votes for 5-10 become 3?

Yeah, turns/cities/armies are all wrong for me now if my vote is counted as a particular (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) choice. Results would be misleading.

For the record, 90% of my play use “City Founding OFF” option.

This one option allows different gameplay than normal games, which allow city founding, by limiting players’ economy, putting emphasis to independent cities and dwellings and leaving more wild lands between cities.

The armies question is weird. Is each stack of 6 an army? Or do we count several stacks as an army so if I split my stacks to attack two different places I have two armies? If it’s the latter I usually only have 2 or 3. If it’s the former then I don’t even count how many stacks I usually have but it’s probably 2-3 early on then around 12 or more later.

The cities question is also odd since more is better in this game always, and you get more as you go. But in terms of how many cities make up the core of my empire usually around 3 to 5 then everything else is just captured cities I develop very little.

Answers don’t match the questions. You guys should check the HTML. I filled 20+ on both armies and cities, since I don’t mind if my own turns take long, but the options shown with the answers are a bit….weird if you think about this.

Anyways, overwhelming SP majority, though I think the real % of SP’rs is higher – they might come to chat on a forum less.

One thing that deserves mention: Random maps have vastly improved since their “dedicated” patch 1.6. Really better.

Kind of hard to answer some of them.

I generally like a custom start with a settler and moderate forces – somewhere between adventure and empire, but with plenty of neutrals/dwellings.

Army count really depends on the strategy being used and the shape of the battle lines.

I also tend to do a fair bit of hotseat against myself to test different compositions and compare different strategies. I’m not really sure where that falls in the listed spectrum.

Yes, some questions are somewhat hard to answer.

I play almost exclusively single player games, although I would prefer to play multiplayer ones. To this date I haven’t been able to get a good (green) connection. While it is true that this is due to my poor computer skills and also the network connection I use, there are no such problems with some other turn-based strategic games I play or played. I would really like to encourage the developers to work on better multiplayer access for future releases of the game.

Playing on large maps and facing a number of opponents if fun but at a certain point there are just too many cities to manage. Since all cities behave identically managing the becomes very repetitive and uneventful.

Random map creator works beautifully in this game. I appreciate the effort that must have gone into it.

Hmmm, I would think of it as single-player, since multi-player means that there are at least two human players involved.

But most importantly, I didn’t think that I’ll ever meet anyone else who likes to play like this! 🙂
